Loving the English D

Could it be that Detroit isn’t such a bad place to play?
It wasn’t so long ago that the Tigers were begging players to come here. They were being rebuffed by marquee free agents such as Miguel Tejada, and having to settle for Fernando Vinas and Jason Johnsons. When they did attract the big [...]

Sean Casey signed?

by billfer on November 16, 2006 · 56 comments

in Free Agents

The Tigers scheduled a conference call today with Sean Casey. I’m guessing that means they signed him. If so, I’m not a big fan of the deal. I’ll have more later tonight.
UPDATE: Jason Beck says it’s a 1 year deal. At least it is short, but the fact the Tigers [...]

What to do about…Jamie Walker?

in Free Agents, Pitching

UPDATE: Walker is now an Oriole pending a physical. The deal is $11.5 million over 3 years. Congrats Jamie and best of luck with the O’s.
Jamie Walker is the Tiger free agent who I’d most like to see back. The lefty reliever is coming off his best season where he posted [...]

I wish I could have posted this earlier (darn day job), but as everybody has heard Kenny Rogers is a Detroit Tiger pending a physical. The deal is for $16 million over two year, which is line with other contracts. That said, I’m not thrilled.
Rogers has been fairly durable throwing over 190 [...]

The Detroit News is reporting that the Detroit Tigers have reached an agreement with Todd Jones. It is reportedly a two year deal (Tim points out in the comments it is rumored to be $8-10 million which seems like a lot to me). Jones was quite good last year as he halved [...]

Rumors and Rumblings - Closer Edition

by billfer on November 29, 2005 · 6 comments

in Free Agents, Pitching

Peter Gammons latest offering (which is now Insider - damn ESPN) has some rumors about the Tigers pursuit of bullpen help. Actually, the article isn’t about that at all, but it does mention the Tigers.
Among the rumblings are that Bob Howry turned down $13.5 million from the Tigers to sign with the Cubs for $12 [...]

Tigers miss on BJ Ryan

by billfer on November 25, 2005 · 6 comments

in Free Agents, Pitching

One of the Tigers’ free agent targets, BJ Ryan is headed to Toronto. New York Daily News reports that Ryan will get $47 million over the next 5 years. We’ll see if this increases the Tigers’ urgency, or price for Kyle Farnsworth. Whether or not the Tigers’ get a true closer isn’t as important as [...]

Farnsworth speculation

by billfer on November 14, 2005 · 7 comments

in Free Agents, Minors

There is an interesting post on the Atlanta Journal Constitutions Braves blog today. The bulk of the post is about Rafael Furcal’s likely destination (unfortunately probably not Detroit), but it also mentioned Kyle Farnsworth.
“Regarding the Braves? other biggest-name free agent, Kyle Farnsworth: The Braves are interested in keeping him, but only if he?s affordable. His [...]

Magg Wheels

With the Tigers interest in Magglio Ordonez, and the confusion over the status of his knee, I wanted to at least get a handle on the chronology of the injury. Below are excerpts from Baseball Prospectus’ Under the Knife report. UTK is written by Will Carroll who has turned himself into the [...]

Ordonez…tempering expectations

by billfer on January 26, 2005 · 7 comments

in Free Agents

While I took a look at Ordonez back in December, with the Tigers recent interest in him, I decided to take a second look. At the time, I thought he’d be a decent gamble if the Tigers could work out a fair deal and protect themselves in the event the knee becomes a [...]

Tigers sign Percival

by billfer on November 17, 2004 · 5 comments

in Contracts, Free Agents

Well it didn’t take long for the Tigers to get the ball rolling. One of their biggest areas of need was the bullpen, and even if you think Troy Percival is on the downside of his career and the Tigers paid too much, their bullpen is better for it. Of course the [...]
