Delivering Zumaya
Here is Joel Zumaya’s delivery at the Future’s Game as captured by my friend Russ. After hearing how violent his delivery was supposed to be, I was pleasantly surprised. It actually seemed quite under control.

Grand Rapids Press: Joel Zumaya He left Monday’s game after seven innings because the Tigers are being extremely protective of his powerful right arm. He had reached his pitch limit, throwing 91 pitches, including 65 strikes, while coming within just one strikeout of tying Alan Webb’s franchise record of 15 set on Aug. 26, 1998.
With the deals for LaTroy Hawkins and Brandon Lyon it appears that the market for “back end of the bullpen pitchers who could potentially set-up or close” may be getting steep for the Tigers. And with that the club may turn to in house options such as Joel Zumaya and Ryan Perry.
Things have been very quiet here at DTW lately. While it wasn’t my intention for things to go dark here, when it’s a one person gig sometimes life gets in the way. Fortunately life will be out of the way this coming week so my winter meetings coverage should be pretty robust and very timely. In the mean time I’ll use this post as a way of catching up on everything that got neglected including Placdio Polanco, Joel Zumaya, Cale Iorg, and Brian Peterson.
Howdy, friends and neighbors. The Tigers (5-3) try to get back on the righteous path tonight against the Padres (4-6), with our hero Justin Verlander carrying the bulk of our hopes for putting up a W to counter the L. He’ll be facing Ian Kennedy, who has the possible misfortune of facing a lineup thoroughly … Continue reading Pregame 9: Detroit Tigers at San Diego Padres
(Read Kevin’s “Realism” first. It’s better, especially when you consider that he wrote it without looking, not even once. I am continually amazed by touch-typists. How do they do it? I’m all hunt and peck.) Here we go! The next “Play Ball!” and the 114th season of Detroit Tigers baseball will commence. The last 29 … Continue reading Pregame 1: Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers
This time last year, the bullpen was seen as a team plus, and the only big question – big to some, anyway – was who or how to replace the involuntarily departed Jose Valverde at closer. That question was settled much later in the year by Joaquin Benoit, but by then it was clear that … Continue reading The Bullplan
The D (for Domination) train rolls into Chicago tonight as the Tigers look win 10 in a row for the first time since 1968. The Tigers now find themselves perched at number 4 in both the ESPN power rankings and the MLB.com fan rankings, and their 9 win streak matches the longest since 1984. 1968 and … Continue reading Game 2011.147: Tigers at White Sox
Well, they did it: the Tigers finished off the 3-game home series against the Twins with a sweep, which makes them 5-0 against the Twins this season. Hopefully the home series was good for cash flow–the Tigers appear to be one of 9 MLB teams that have unacceptable debt loads. The last time the Tigers … Continue reading Game 2011.56: Tigers at White Sox
West Michigan 3, Great Lakes 2 (Dodgers) West Michigan trailed 0-2 throughout most of the game before West Michigan scored 3 runs on a 2RBI single from Ryan Enos (RF) and a RBI single from James Robbins (1B). – The Cliff Lee race is over, and the Phillies win by a mile. Lee reportedly left $50-$60M on the table to sign with Philly, who now boasts Cole Hamels as their #4 starter. Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels. Wow. Kudos to Lee, it really wasn’t about the money. – Henning writes that the Tigers’ next … Continue reading News and Notes: 12.14.2010 (updated)
– Zach Miner has been designated for assignment. Assuming he clears (I’m sure he will), he’ll be a free agent on Friday. But the Tigers are likely to bring him back. He’s been a great spot starter and will be a good long man starting off in 2011. Good info on the rationale for taking … Continue reading News and Notes: 11.30.2010
