Delivering Zumaya

Here is Joel Zumaya’s delivery at the Future’s Game as captured by my friend Russ. After hearing how violent his delivery was supposed to be, I was pleasantly surprised. It actually seemed quite under control.

  1. I was also surprised and pleased with his delivery. I think he actually looked smoother with his delivery than Verlander was with his.

Also I really liked the amount of leg drive he used to generate his power. That is what a lot of long lasting power pitchers do. I think that as long as he can control his offspeed stuff well enough to throw called strikes with it from time to time he will be just fine.

I really liked how he moved the fastball in and out. His fastball had a ton of movement on it but still the catcher hardly had to move the glove on most of the pitches. If he can hit the corners with that much ease he will be successful no matter what level he is at.

All in all I have to say the bullpen move due to lack of pitches and high effort delivery were overstated. He didn’t really show his offspeed stuff today but he didn’t need it. I think he is on track to become a starter. He needs more seasoning, and hopefully enough luck to avoid injury.
