Game 2015.50: Tigers at Los Anaheim

Well, as Jud and others have pointed out, Anaheim has been a house of horrors for the Tigers. Last season the Tigers went 1-6 against the Angels; 2014 was a respectable 3-4, but that followed up a 0-6 2013. The good news is that the Angels are struggling this year at 22-28, with a thin .704 team OPS (Detroit is at .755), and with a fat 4.27 team ERA (Detroit is even fatter, 4.47).

The good news is that fat ERA has lately been in spite of, not because of, tonight’s starting pitcher Justin Verlander, whose last 4 starts have been vintage Verlander:  1.19 ERA with a stingy 0.82 WHIP. That, combined with the Angels offensive woes, should add up to a strong performance. OK, actually, Verlander will get bombed, because: rally monkeys.

Today’s Lettuce Win This Game Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. JD Martinez, LF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. Castellanos, 3B
  6. Upton, LF
  7. Maybin, CF
  8. McCann, C
  9. Romine, SS

  1. Tigers have lost seven straight in Rally Monkee World.

    1. We would have a shot with JV but I’m afraid the offense looks very offensive. Perhaps Maybin can manufacture us a run.

  2. After 3 innings and 9 batters each pitcher has 5Ks. Pitching duel anyone?

    1. Love it, the way they are pitching I might be able to go to bed by 11 PM!

      1. I was watching “Where the Eagles Dare” on TMC….it was tuff to turn the Direct TV up to channel 747.

  3. I am 2-11 at Angels Stadium…the most amazing part of the Tigers going there is the place is basically packed. I go there for any team not named Tigers..Yankees..Red Sox and it is seldom half full..And when the Tigers are there lots and lots of Tiger jerseys..and great crowds every time.

  4. A solo dinger is gonna win this game….could be a walk off.

  5. Brad doesn’t believe in wasting an out moving the runner. So with Miggy on second no outs Victors pop up to the SS is normal for the Brad coached Tigers!

    1. JD hasn’t been capitalizing on Kinsler hits. I’d suggest Maybin batting first followed by Kinsler. I’d put JD back behind V-Mart as Castellanos also seems more comfortable batting sixth…just sayin.

  6. Unfortunately this will go to the “pens”…we all know how that will turn out!…sorry JV!

  7. Man would it be nice to have a guy who we know can get an out or two in the bullpen. JV has to take care of this himself.

  8. Tigers 0-3 RISP, Monkees 2 for 2 (if Romine doesn’t get an error)

  9. Yat ta dadda dadda!…clown show strikes again. But thats what happens when u can’t score even one frickin run!…my buddies all went to the game….what a waste of money….stay tuned two more of these to go Tues and Wed!….1-5 trip…Ausmus for President!!!!

  10. JV is gonna end up with a very average line. Would have been a very strong one if we had a bullpen.

  11. The Monkee has spoken. And they gave JV 4 ERs even after McCann’s throwing error.

  12. At least it isn’t something new….same old same old…..they will still hit the LA Sunset strip tonight and be more hung over tomorrow!..every year, nothing changes!

  13. Something to think about: Sanchez goes tomorrow, chances are the Twinkies won’t be able to catch us although by September it could be interesting. These are our Detroit Tigers.

  14. Mike Siocscia out dueled Ausmus and has fired his team up for the sweep after that complete game.

  15. Oh, we’ll end up about .500, there are too many stars no to. Thing is, with a bullpen, or a manager, we could probably win 92 games and run away with a playoff spot.

I can’t imagine a pitcher being more negatively influenced than a bad bullpen than JV over the last few years. Seriously, there’s gotta be a way to look at this. Maybe inherited runners scored following a start. Last night was so freaking typical, even down to the failed fielder’s choice/error combo. Any trouble that a starter gets into, whatever the worst case scenario is, is going to happen with this bullpen.

  16. Kevin…I was thinking about your last night comments and I don’t think Leyland would have kept Verlander in so long. In fact, I can recall Verlander’s protesting Leyland sitting him down in the 8th and bringing in a reliever. However in this situation, it made sense to start him in the eight, however after one, then two, and and finally three hits in-a-row, it was time to pull him. However there does not seem to be any confidence in this bullpen to hold a close game. Resultantly, Verlander went too deep when he gas tank was empty. So, what stat can you use to measure such events? The so called “gone too long” stat. That would be a tuff stat to develop that has any reliability. Rather, perhaps this is what managers get paid for? BTW, I a TIVO’ing tonight’s game to watch tomorrow before Wednesday’s game. Three late nights with my 0500CDT wake up, especially after losses is way too much for me.

    1. Two hits should have been the limit, ASSuMEing you wanted a decent chance to tie or win in the 9th. In any case, why would you bring Farmer in? I would think J Wilaon would have been the choice, no matter what the lefty-righty matchup was. I don’t TIVO but at 11:30 tonight I’ll probably switch so I can watch another episode of Perry Mason.

      1. Good point Florida….I’d would of have V-lander on a very short leash and would have pulled him after the first, but certainly second hit. Meanwhile did anyone hear why Asumus brought Farmer in instead of J. Wilson who was up and warm before Farmer even stood up. Maybe it was the lefty-righty match ups that we headed our way? Still Farmer???

  17. I TIVO now , just to not be in pain watching everyday. If they win or lose play well either way I watch… after looking at the results…Needless to say I haven’t watched a lot of games lately..
Last night JV lost for only one reason….his team banged out one whole hit into the 7th…and they looked pathetic doing that…constant pressure on good pitchers like JV has to get to them. As Kevin stated, a starter makes one mistake..one or two bad pitches out of 118 and game over…meanwhile a guy like Upton looks like he could care less about being there. As long as that $1 mil check gets there every other Friday!…

  18. mention of some possible (trade) interest for Shields (pitcher SD) – his line today:

    2 2/3 IN 8 H, 10 ER, 2 HR… go get him CWS!

  19. Sanchez pitches like he’s got no confidence in ‘his stuff’…and i concur w/his assessment
