Game 2016.49: Tigers at A’s

Holy cow was the bullpen awful yesterday.

Not surprisingly, the Tigers have one of the worst bullpens in the American League. 14th in ERA (4.61), 13th in WHIP (1.39), 13th in BAA (.280), and 13th in OPS (.786). We’re roughly where we were last year…with half of the pen having turned over. One of two things is going to happen:

1) It’s not going to get better, and we’re going to have a revolving door of free agents and AAA pitchers who put up similar numbers.

2) Wilson/Wilson/Lowe will progress to the mean, and we’ll be a little better. Based on history and simple statistical theory, I fully expect this to happen.

Note that the Rangers’ bullpen is worse than the Tigers in every regard, and they are 7 games over .500. And Prince Fielder is below the Mendoza line with an OPS of .560. Every fan always has something to complain about.

Anyway, Pelfrey puts on his pinata costume once again as the Tigers look to take the series.

Curious to see what they do with Greene. I think he’s a better option than Pelfrey, but we may want to give Greene another run in the pen.

  1. Off to a good start!..you will be able to tell how much night clubbing they do out here. Especially when they come here to LA…by wednesday they will drag themselves out of here..and it won’t be because of ball!!!..just like every year.

  2. Why is it that here in the 6th inning…this 2-0 lead isn’t enough…by a lot!!!

  3. Yesterday clown show baserunning…today clown show defense…JD and Miggy..1 for 20…..10 Ks….wait til LA it will be worse!…

  4. Bullpen was awful again. I wish I had an answer. Or even an idea for them.

JD and Miggy are gonna have bad series that overlap. It’s bound to happen. Nothing to worry about.

    1. While the ball pen may not have been perfect, I do not blame them for the loss. You’re right, JD and Miggy contributed nothing. Victor was 3 for 4 and even McCann had an RBI. Justin Wilson did give up a key hit but that’s all. He had 3 strikeouts. Lowe only gave up 1 run, he was very, very lucky. No I firmly believe we were mismanaged out of a chance to win. With Pelfrey’s history why in the world wouldn’t you have someone ready to go at the start of the 6th. So you let him start the inning and he gives up a hit but gets a DP. Then another hit. That should have done it for Mike. Instead we have to wait until 2 runners are in scoring position and after the walk, Billy Butler does what he does best, screw the Tigers. If Wilson had come in after the 2nd hit, chances are he finishes the 6th and we are still up 2-0. Ian’s error either doesn’t happen or is less critical. Kevin, I would appreciate your opinion on my view of this game.
