Game 2014.106: Tigers 4, Rockies 2

Colorado Rockies (44-64) at Detroit Tigers (58-47)

Schedule and projected starters:

  • Fri 8/1   7:08   Justin Verlander vs Franklin Morales (L)
  • Sat 8/2  7:08   Rick Porcello vs Tyler Matzek (L)
  • Sun 8/3 1:08  Anibal Sanchez vs Jorge De La Rosa (L)

Yes, you saw correctly. An entire series facing lefties, so it may be a while before we see either of the new faces, David Price (who should start Tuesday in New York), or left-handed hitting centerfielder

Ezequiel Carrera, who was called up from Toledo to take Austin Jackson’s spot on the roster. Dave Dombrowski said that Carrera and Rajai Davis will “share” centerfield, though whether it will be a left-right type of platoon or some other arrangement will have to be seen. Don’t be surprised to see Carrera introduced as a pinch-runner: he has already stolen 43 bases at Toledo.

Tonight’s Lineup:

  1. Davis, CF
  2. Kinsler, 2B
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. Hunter, RF
  6. JD Martinez, LF
  7. Castellanos, 3B
  8. Holaday, C
  9. Suarez, SS

Davis will try to match Austin Jackson’s recent success in the leadoff spot. Even more interesting will be to see how he does handling the centerfield duties. The Tigers’ pitchers gets a little bit of a break with the Rockies lineup, with Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day DL.

Who’s playing 3B and batting ninth? Kelly?

    August 1, 2014 at 6:39 pm

We were given a red card and are handicapped having to play one man short.

I was playing one man short. I fixed it though, although I considered leaving it for the purpose of hilarious commentary.

It’s really cool of Verlander to make sure that every ball in play is hit to Davis in center. Good practice.

I bet the Rockie pitching staff is excited to get to lower their league worse ERA facing the Sluggos

    August 1, 2014 at 8:20 pm

The Tiger offense is doing tonite what they have been doing too much lately ….. nothing.

When’s the last time JV had so few pitches through six?

  9. jud

    August 1, 2014 at 9:18 pm

Seems like Jv pitches from the stretch 99% of the time…too many leadoff hitters get on then he scrambles the rest of the inning

That’s who he is now. At least he hasn’t walked anybody. He’s had good command tonight, but enough with the power pitcher jazz. As soon as he gets over that he will be a better pitcher.

How many weeks ago did the Tigers steal their last base???

He still has a great shot at joining the 20-2 club though.

This would be a good time for the bats to wake up; against the punching bag pitching staff that COL has. If you can’t beat up on these guys, who can you?

    So far..Davis in leadoff spot…success!

  14. Coleman

    August 1, 2014 at 9:44 pm

Wait…was that just a good Verlander start? And wasn’t his last good start with Holaday behind the plate? A small sample size hmm there.

Nathan being Nathan…walks the #9 hitter putting the tying run on 1st

    • Coleman

      August 1, 2014 at 10:06 pm

After starting him 0-2. But it all worked out.

    • Vince in MN

      August 1, 2014 at 10:07 pm

After being ahead 0-2 also. I think the pressure is off that Soria might supplant him, so things might just get back to normal for our Closer.

    Good win.

      August 1, 2014 at 10:24 pm

i agree…from here until October, DET needs to beat the teams/pitching match-ups they’re supposed to win, and play like its a playoff game in the regular season match-ups against playoff-type teams/pitchers.

if DET truly wants to compete for a WS crown, they have two months to solve a few pressing issues …beginning with the bullpen – which technically they could still bring in another outside piece under the whole August waiver-trade deadline (part II) – but i do believe they have the pieces in place now (though Nathan in that role of the ‘one inning/closer mentality’ worries me), just need better management and hands-on tweaking of those pieces

Nathan a lights out inning! (Meaning he didn’t give up 2-4-6 runs)

With 3 LH starting pitchers we shouldn’t see Avila at all in this series . BUT Smarty doesn’t want him to feel bad so he will put his ..114 post All Star BA on the line tomorrow…betcha!

      August 2, 2014 at 9:58 am

unfortunately Holoday is only batting .185 against lefties… so neither of the choices against LHP are good

      • Coleman

        August 2, 2014 at 11:17 am

And Cabrera is only hitting .259 against lefties.
