Game 2014.62: Tigers 4, White Sox 0

This series may be lost, but hey, the season series (so far) is still on the line, as the Detroit Tigers (33-28, 1st Central, 4th AL) yet again look to begin the uphill climb to the straight and narrow. The Chicago White Sox (33-33, 3rd Central, 9th AL) have made them look silly lately, but that can’t go on. Can it? Well, facing Chris Sale, maybe it can.

Tonight’s “Tigers Are People, Too” lineup:

LF Davis
2B Kinsler
3B Cabrera
1B V. Martinez
RF Hunter
LF J.D. Martinez
3B Castellanos
C “Bunt” Holaday
SS South Bound Suarez

P Scherzer

I suppose we can save the festival of pessimism and alarm for after the game. Or for during the game. Castellanos is hitting, Suarez is exciting, and Sanchez will pitch again eventually. Detroit still has Miggy and VMart, and sometimes that actually makes a difference. Go Tigers.

POSTGAME: Oh man does that zero to the far right look good. I think I’ll indulge in a bit of “You Said It” without the credit – you guys know who you are. The Tigers battery was fully charged tonight, eh?

Thank you Vmart aka professional hitter!

3-4 for Holaday, and he called a great game. See you again in 2 weeks Bryan (beat you to it, jud!)

6 shutout innings on 81 pitches. Ace-like.

That 7th inning was his best.

Boras is just counting the money.

Max at 98 pitches. He ABSOLUTELY comes back out for the 9th, right?

with that clutch two out single & RBI, Holaday is now 3 for 4 today… just sayin… Avila (Sr & Jr)

Tell me again who is our starting catcher and why?

Ausmus seems to subscribe to ‘the calendar theory’ when deciding his starting catcher…and holidays (holaday) only happen about once a month

Now let’s hope this wasn’t a blind squirrel for the Tigs. Scherzer said after the game “we came with the mindset tonight that we weren’t going to lose”…well Max that mindset has to be used more than once a WEEK!!!

That was a huge win.

I cannot recall the last CG SO for the Tigs. Awesome performance. Pay him the $

It was comforting for sure, but I still feel that we’ve got a long ways to go to be comfortably out of this funk.

Last complete game shutout? How quickly we forget. May 24, 2013. Anibal Sanchez vs. Twins.

Congratulations, Max. Only 5 to go to catch up with Verlander…

  1. I do believe this mess will eventually sort itself out and we’ll see a team more like we expected. Probably shouldn’t ask my opinion on the Easter bunny and tooth fairy.

That said, I have no idea at all how it’s going to happen. With so many things turning to hamburger all at once, where do you start? Hitting? Bullpen? Defense? Starting pitching? No sparks to fan into flame here.

While I’m sure he’s been speaking to Ausmus a lot lately I’ll bet Jim Leyland is glad he’s a gentleman of leisure right about now.

  2. Sale should’ve listened to Rod, who said he was going to walk Victor. Huge one by V-Mart.

  3. 99 pitches through 8th, no question Scherzer will start the 9th…and it will be up to him to finish it… great time to get his first ever SO and CG

  4. 3-4 for Holaday, and he called a great game. See you again in 2 weeks Bryan (beat you to it, jud!)

    1. And wasn’t our man Ingvila “calling the game” for most of the 6 and 16 melt down and starting pitcher break down? Hmmm.

    1. It was comforting for sure, but I still feel that we’ve go a long ways to go to be comfortably out of this funk.

      1. 4 game set was shortened to a 3 game set by Tuesday’s rainout, we host the Twinkies tomorrow.

Which begs the question – why didn’t they play a double header today? Is there any worse procrastinator than the MLB scheduling guy?

        1. Tigers are too busy to be double hitting as they gearing up for Polish-American Night on Friday against the Twins.

        2. Duh!…that’s right. I see where they don’t have to face Cy Hughes in the Twinkie series…probably a good thing.

Next three series (all against AL Central teams) are essential for DET…the wins and losses over the next few weeks could be magnified the last two weeks in September. As everyone recalls CLE finished only 1 game behind DET last year.

            1. MIN has a little history in turning around reclamation projects/rejects from the NYY… as i recall Carl Pavano always seemed to pitch very well against DET…but just OK against the rest of the league

  5. 6 up in the loss column on everyone but KC…If you look at KC schedule for the reast of June they could easily be 10 out by July 1..their schedule is brutal…

Now lets hope this wasn’t a blind squirrel for the Tigs. Scherzer said after the game “we came with the mindsep tonight that we weren’t going to lose”…well Max that minset has to be used more than once a WEEK!!!

  6. This is the type of performance that an ace delivers when his ballclub is struggling. Thank you Max for having that “enough of this crap” mindset. We need more of that mindset on the team.

    1. I would agree with you, but the team has been struggling for a month. Max was supposed to step up a couple weeks ago.

    1. That was a funny story, especially the part about calling Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Eric Stonestreet, Rob Riggle and David Koechner “A-List Celebrities.” OK, maybe Rudd. Maybe. Still, it’s cool to find out there are celebrity Royals fans out there.

  7. And you know why Dave Clark is so good?….you never notice him…announcers never talk about his decisions…..he IS good!!
