Game 2017.83: Giants at Tigers

Alex Presley and the Mysterious Jim “WAR-Face” Adduci have both been taken off of the disabled list. Alex is back with the team, and den Dekker has been relegated to DFA land. Adduci is at Toledo, to tease us until further notice.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  3. Justin Upton, LD
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. JD Martinez, RF
  6. Victor Martinez, DH
  7. Mikie Mahtook, CF
  8. James McCann, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Daniel Norris vs Ty Blach.

The Tigers are facing a pitcher literally named blech. OK, well maybe not literally.

The Martinez’s are batting back to back once again, for the first time in…a while. I don’t have time to look it up.

  1. The last back to back Martinez was June 15 in a win against the Rays in which they went a combined 4 for 8 with 2 RBI. V-Mart also had a no-RBI RBI thanks to the defensively challenged SS Daniel Robertson, put the Tigers ahead late. all for naught as F-Rod, the day after shooting off his mouth, gave up a HR to tie it back up. Huge game for Miggy, who won it, and this probably helped inspire or at least further encouraged my ill-fated prediction of how he would be batting .300 by the end of June.

If this was the same game Victor came out of not feeling well at all, well, how quickly we forget, eh?

  2. It’s hard to watch Vanman miss the strike zone sooooo often. He has a lot of “stuff”… But when he grooves it he grooves it and it gets hit. He won’t be in that rotation that much longer…. Oh wait I forgot it’s the Tigers.. Nevermind…

    1. Last start I thought that he was starting to look like a left handed Pelfrey, can’t get past the 5th. You are right in that he should be sent down. Not only is he getting hit, to me it looks like it’s much too easy to get in his head. If they can get in your head, your chance for success is very limited.

  3. Giants have relief guys that only have to get one guy out in a tight situation…. Is that legal?

  4. I’m at the game. At least 10 people said don’t pinch hit Avila for mccan because they’ll bring in a lefty. So what does brad do? Kind of fun watching bruce Bochy actually know how to handle a pitching staff

    1. McCann versus righty versus Avila versus lefty? I’ll take my chances with Avila.

  5. That was an interesting look at managerial brilliance. The right hander comes in for SF and promptly gives up a single to Mikie. So Brad gets Alex up to the plate with a lefthander ALREADY READY in the pen. Bruce says thank you very much and Alex who can’t hit lefties strikes out. Thank you very much. Fortunately, Gearrin looks like a slug and walks Iggy. Ian get an infield hit off the pitcher. Brad prays that Gearrin is ok and can continue. Casty gets a sac fly but J-Up strikes out to leave it at 5-4. Love these epic battles between mediocre teams! We have a ball game. The Aussie came in and kept it at 5-0 long enough for us to get close.

    1. McCann against RHP in 111 PA: .179.264.295=.558
Avila vs. LHP in 14 PA: .167.286.167.=.452

Sure enough, pretty icky with Avila. On the other hand, Okert isn’t exactly a frightening lefty. SF has none of these and no lefty LOOGYs. Not exactly an all or nothing situation there, and Avila did get to bat again, against a RHP, unsurprisingly. Not sure if there was such a chess game going on in that particular at bat, such as going to great lengths to get Kontos out of there (Avila did single off of him yesterday) or make SF burn their pen. There are other reasons you might want or need to get Avila in the game.

      1. Yes, Kontos was the key and the reason NOT to use Avila with a LHP ready. Last night Kontos gave up 2 hits including J-UP’s winner in 2/3 of an inning. He came into this game and promptly gave up a hit. Perfect reason not to get him out of the game given Alex’s poor numbers against LHP. Since Alex did get a key hit against Kontos the night before, there was zero chance Bruce would let him face Alex again having ANY lefthander available. So McCann should have batted and we would all cross our fingers that he would not GIDP!

        1. Well, I thought the critique was a bit of a reach. Didn’t strike me as a key strategic moment. A rally was cooking, and I was fine with McCann or whoever. Maybe there’s something about the McCann-Kontos matchup we don’t know (all we know is that they haven’t faced each other).

If we want to talk managerial brilliance, then one could question why Bochy left Blach the Unproven in there to face Victor with two men on and a base open.

          1. As I said, McCann could have GIDP or more likely struck out the way he chases out of the zone. In that case nothing would have changed. It was just that Kontos had issues the night before and given up a hit to his first batter. Most managers would want him to stay in the game a little longer. Bochy I give a pass to based on his multiple world series rings and manager of the year awards.

    1. Really nice play be Casty and great pic by Miggy. If Casty goes 5-4-3 he might not have gotten 2.

  6. Nice try with 4…BUT the worst hitting team in the MBL innings 7-9 can barely get one ball out of the infield in the 8th and 9th…business as usual..

  7. 7th was a beauty, though. They might be coming around as you had mentioned.

  8. So just how ARE the Tigers doing against starters the team has never seen before (even as relievers)? We have a hunch, but we don’t KNOW.

    13 games, Tigers 4-9
    73 IP, 31 ER, 3.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 7.4/K9, 3.7 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9, 60 H, 31 BB, 60 K, 10 HR
Composite Guy would be a solid #2 starter for Detroit
