Game 2016.77: Tigers at Marlins

There’s an old saying, that the good thing about baseball is that there is always another game the next day. Unfortunately, yesterday was the exception, and so there was a whole day with nothing to do but stew over yet another humiliating sweep at the hands of the Indians.  I suppose it gave the team a day to recover and reboot, so maybe that will help.

Of course maybe the best way to start over again isn’t to lead off with Mike “I’ll Get Them Out Eventually” Pelfrey.  For what it’s worth though, Pelfrey says that his one stint in the bullpen was very valuable for him, and that he got his splitter working. And for what it’s worth, his relief appearance was better than his starts, and almost as long as most of them: 4 1/3 scoreless innings with three hits.

The Tigers just have two with the Marlins. They started the 2016 season with a 2-game sweep of Florida.

Today’s Bats in the Pelfrey Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Maybin, CF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. Castellanos, 3B
  6. Upton, LF
  7. McCann, C
  8. Aviles, RF
  9. Iglesias, SS

  1. On Tigers Live (have they considered renaming the show?) they were discussing if the team should focus on getting the wild card instead of trying for first in the central. It’s a great plan unless you consider that to make the wild card they have to do what they still haven’t been able to do this year: win more games. As predicted Aviles is playing.

Jack Morris is in the booth tonight. I will miss the scientific discussions of cloud formations and visualization of wins when we are being thumped.

  2. That’s a reason to like Morris in the booth. He’s not shy about pointing out the mistakes our fielders make, lack of hustle included, that lead to extra bases taken and runs.

    1. w/ that Cabrera HR, he has now homered against all 30 MLB teams, the 50th player to do that.

  3. I charted Pelfreys pitches tonight…He threw 31 fastballs at exactly 92 mph. 1 changeup at 80 and 1 slider at 87…..2 runs on 7 rockets off their bats….Hey McCann I wonder if they know whats coming. They did the exact same thing last game when he got lit up……..hello!

  4. In the 3rd he got two quick outs with 80..74..94..87 mph pitches….then threw 11 straight 94’s gave up single..double…pop out..

  5. 4th inning he went 93..74–87–94 87 and got two quick outs…then he went 11 straight 92-93 got in trouble again. Never changes speed
Get the pattern!. These are major league hitters..

  6. Could be that’s all he’s capable of. Tells us how short we are of starters. Who would have thought I could ever think the pen was better.
