Detroit Tigers Weblog Live – 1.22.09

It’s the return of DTW live. Tune in at 9:30 ET tonight and will talk Tigers as they embark on their caravan. Topics include: well the bullpen of course, Verlander’s extension, the demise of WDFN and whatever else comes up. Hope to see you back here at 9:30.

We ended up covering quite a bit in this extended (44 minutes) edition. Once we get back to a regular posting schedule I’d like to keep these a little shorter.

I was looking over his Lyon’s splits, and for each of the last three years, he has huge differences between home and away. Two years where his away numbers were much better and one where his home numbers were. Is this the profile of a head case, or does he just happen to have huge random meltdowns every so often?

I liked the comments about Lyon. The only question I had was that you noted the high BABIP last year for him, and that he would probably revert to prior year standards. At the same time you noted that he had increased his K rate and decreased his BB rate.
Question: Is he throwing more strikes, therefore more hittable pitches, more K’s, less BB’s, but also better BABIP because the pitches are hittable. It still doesn’t address the issue of the infield hits.
Wouldn’t the likelihood that he decreases his BABIP coincide with a decrease in K’s and an increase in BB’s?
He seems like a good addition to the bullpen, and see what his roles winds up as.
