Programming Note

I’ll be on the It Is What It Is show with Sean Baligian on WDFN 1130 this morning. I’m slated to be on at 10:35 so if you’re interested you can catch the stream. If the audio is available I will post that later today.

UPDATE: Here’s the audio from today: [audio:http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/18227/1h/cchannel.download.akamai.com/18227/podcast/DETROIT-MI/WDFN-AM/bill.mp3?CPROG=PCAST&MARKET=DETROIT-MI&NG_FORMAT=sports&SITE_ID=1128&STATION_ID=WDFN-AM&PCAST_AUTHOR=Sports_Radio_1130_WDFN&PCAST_CAT=sports&PCAST_TITLE=WDFN_-_Sean_Baligian] or you can download it.

  1. I’ll try to catch it.

Meanwhile…. I was looking at Tigers hitting (OPS) with men on vs. bases empty. Some pretty stark differences, player to player, that surprised me.

Only two regulars have been significantly better with men on:

    SANTIAGO 1.367 vs .812
    INGE 1.115 vs .499 (yikes)
    GRANDERSON .939 vs .765
THAMES .973 vs .513 (also yikes)
RENTERIA .797 vs .624 (thought it would be the opposite, but then how would he have all the RBI? The illusion of impressions)

Two regulars are roughly even, though not with each other:

CABRERA .869 men on .821 bases empty
RODRIGUEZ .692 men on .689 bases empty

Lotsa people doing much better with bases empty, though Maggs should be exempted from the “shame” of this category:

    JOYCE 1.481 vs .639
    RABURN .957 vs .600
    ORDONEZ .942 vs .824
    GUILLEN .877 vs .743
    POLANCO .794 vs .637
    SHEFFIELD .729 vs .579 (designated what? Oh – walker/striker-outer)

I’m too afraid to know what these numbers would look like with the Rangers and Mariners games removed.

  2. Nothing you didn’t know, perhaps, but the Tigers have a 5-15 (2-6 at home) Friday-Sunday record. This would be an excellent time to turn that around. While the Tigers are on the upswing, against a struggling AL Central rival with some hitters who really give the Tiger pitchers a hard time. 3 well-played games in a row would give me back the confidence I had after the sweep of the Yankees, even if the Tigers don’t manage to sweep the Twins. Time for Galaragga to get the win against the Twins. More early scoring, please. Keep it going.

  3. Like I said a week or so ago, I think the Tigers will be right around 30-30

They have gone .500 since their 0-7 start

Bonderman/Verlander have looked very good lately.

I still think Shef is injured, but if he can somehow hit like he did last year at this time we should start rolling…

Also anyone notice how Guillen seems to be “on a mission” and since the Leyland blowup has seemed to be much more dialed in and not show pain in his leg (ie limp)?
