Game 2011.68: Indians at Tigers

That, said Justin Verlander, was my good stuff.

Hard to argue with that; if possible he looked even better than he did when he threw his no-hitter against Toronto.  Many were convinced by the 7th inning that another no-hitter was inevitable (I won’t name names), but, alas, it was not to be.  Still a masterful performance, including fitting our old friend Grady Sizemore for the golden sombrero.

All kinds of people were raving about Verlander on the sports shows and internets, which is nice.  The Free Press launched a Let’s Give Verlander a Nickname campaign, which is something else.

Oh, and now we’re really, really in first.  Break out the Stroh’s!

Brad Penny will venture out to defend first place tonight.  Penny was good enough his last start, giving up 3 runs in 7 innings, but unfortunately that night the Tigers couldn’t muster any offense against Cy Bedard. That may be less of a problem against Fausto Carmona, perhaps best known for playing a tune on Gary Sheffield’s head.

Carmona has dropped 5 consecutive starts, posting a 9.55 ERA over that span. His last start prompted Manager Manny Acta to declare Carmona was “divorced from the strike zone.”  So the Tiger plan will be to be patient at the plate and build hitters’ counts, right? Right?

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Magglio Ordonez

He didn’t get a hit his first game back, but hit the ball hard twice–harder than he was hitting it before his Toledo stint.  Let’s see how today looks.

Today’s Maggsnificent Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Don Kelly 3B
  3. Brennan Boesch LF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Magglio Ordonez RF
  7. Alex Avila C
  8. Jhonny Peralta SS
  9. Ramon Santiago 2B

  1. Santiago gets the nod at 2B over Rallykiller. With Maggs back in the lineup and last nights hitting star back on the bench (!) , I guess the extra LH bat is a must for JL.

    1. In case you are wondering (which I’m sure you weren’t) Firefox seemed to be the culprit with Gameday as I had no problem with it using Chrome.

  2. Wow, what a performance by Verlander, he is so good. The stuff he was throwing in the 7th and into the 8th was just so filthy, still heating 97 and his curve ball was just lights out. Verlander in my opinion is one of the most overrated good pitchers in the league. Teams need to learn that when their pitcher is flirting with perfection or a no-no that in the later innings they can’t be up to bat too long. You can’t keep that pitcher sitting down too long on the bench, it happened the other day with Liriano and it happened again with Verlander, but with that being said just a great performance, he brought it and now we are in first place, go Tigers!

  3. I guess our pitching staff missed the memo that we are in first place and should play like a first place team?

  4. Come on…let’s don’t drop the ball now that we are in first. We have got to bury Cleveland.

    1. Seriously…. This game is just upsetting….We get first place, and then don’t show up the next day…

    2. I was going to tell you that we’d lose 1st place Today, but I didn’t want to spoil anyones day. Don’t worry, we’ll win it back Tomorrow.
