Tigers sign Timo Perez, Bobby Seay

Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Tigers have signed Timo Perez to a minor league contract.

Perez will be 30 next season. He plays all out field positions and hits left handed. His major league career numbers are 262/301/373 with his best season coming in 2002 for the Mets when he hit 295/331/437. In part time big league duty since then he hasn’t topped an OBP of 301.

He was productive at the AAA level last year hitting 295/349/515 so maybe he can help the Mud Hens win another International League Championship.

Morosi also notes that Bobby Seay will be returning with a minor league contract as well.

  1. Don’t the Tigers have enough Perezes who cannot hit?

  2. The Tigs need to make a run at Craig Wilson. Cheap power and depth!

  4. Problems? Every other team in the division wishes it had Detroit’s “problems.”

Sure, a lefthanded-hitting outfielder off the bench would be nice, and maybe some depth at catcher in the minors. But that’s nothing, really.

The Tigers’ biggest problem isn’t even a problem: it’s getting requisite value for Marcus Thames in a trade.

A problem is Cleveland’s bullpen, or Eric Wedge as field manager, or Minnesota’s lack of starters. Or Juan Uribe.

  6. Keep in mind these are just minor league contracts which are very low risk. I don’t think anybody within the Tigers organization expects them to really fill a role.

If they end up making use of them then great, if not it doesn’t affect their 25/40 man a bit.

  7. I think Samara was just playing on the Neifi Perez joke.

  9. That’s supposed to have html tags with “hilarious sarcasm” in them, but EVIDENTLY Billfer’s little layout objects to html humor. I AM STOPPING NOW.
