Craig Monroe and the RBI

If you’re interested, I have a piece about Craig Monroe’s RBI total over at Motown Sports.

Also, while the Tigers lost tonight it was a heck of an effort. After two rough games to close out the homestand, they went into Boston and played the World Champs very tough. Of course I’d have rather had the win, but the team played well. Most troubling is the pitching’s inability to prevent runs. At least the bullpen was solid tonight, and for the second time this season Jason Johnson struck out a hitter and it resulted in a run.

  1. Nice piece. Is there anyway you can gauge how overrated rbi totals are? Maybe the percentage of RBI leaders that have a poor RBI/Runner?

I’m really not a Tram-hater, but I didn’t understand why Johnson was left in long enough to give up 9 runs. I know the bullpen has been worked a lot lately, but it was obvious Johnson didn’t have it today. The only thing that saved him was solid/opportune defense through the first few innings.

  2. I see Placido Polanco, one of my favorite players, has been batting leadoff for the Tigers lately. He normally batted in the two hole or lower during his years in Philadelphia. What was the thinking here and how has it worked out?

  3. The thinking was “we don’t have a legitimate lead-off hitter, so let’s try Polanco”. It’s worked out wonderfully, though. He’s been on fire ever since he came here.

  4. Well, the Maybin saga has taken an interesting turn. He’s expected to enroll in classes in the next week.

  5. I thought he was going to enroll in classes in a junior college, meaning that we’d still be able to negotioate with him.
