The Tigers now sit with basically a 50-50 chance of making the playoffs, if you believe the projections. That’s not really what we were looking for before the season started, but considering the Tigers went into June at 24-27, it’s not so bad.
Tonight is the Zimmermann Experiment phase of the Wild Card Project. Zimmermann’s last comeback from DL was forgettable, or, even worse, not forgettable. Zimmermann faces off against Ubaldo Jimenez, who the Tigers knocked about for 5 runs in 5 innings last time up. Jimenez got in such a funk that he got the Sanchez Bullpen Banishment treatment, but he has been good lately, with a 1.01 WHIP over the last 30 days, and a 2-hit complete game win last time out.
I was pretty off with my prediction for a good Upton game last night. The Upster whiffed 3 times and left 5 guys on base. I’ll try again tonight and predict good things from the Bottom of the Order Boys: Erick Aybar is 6-for-16 with a HR against Jimenez, and Iglesias is 4-for-7 with a triple.

After the game, I will not listen too by the way…Brad, our manager of the year, will whine. He will blame,Cy Young, He will blame, Mickey Lolich, he will blame Kirk Gibson….but one thing you can count on Brad WILL not say we goofed…we made a mistake..

Great game, the real question is will Zimmerman pitch again in 5 days. I know in these days of texting and cell phones that no one looks in their rear view mirrors, but did you notice who just tied us for the same wild card we want. (hint: they play in the Bronx) JV will do his best today but even if we win, I’m very concerned about the 4 games with the Twinkies.

tough to be upset w/Zimmerman – he’s trying to contribute, but one could question the judgement of DET management for rolling him out there against BAL, when he confirmed his velocity was down – and was having trouble locating his fastball… ‘hoping or wishing’ for optimum results when the facts/stats indicate otherwise, are typically not good game/team strategies
i see some of the other contending team’s Mgrs managing games with a ‘playoff mentality’/sense of urgency (i.e., pulling SP’s ‘before’ a game gets out of hand, bringing in their “closer” in the 6th, 7th or 8th to stop a rally, etc)… as if every game (here on out) is a must win – but only see flashes of that w/DET
Norman, I agree with you, Zimm is not to blame. He is somewhat of a warrior who just wants to help. His last outing in Toledo was not encouraging but we made the decision to start him (and against the O’s). Perhaps if we were playing the Blue Jays he would have faced them. Frankly, our starters have not been doing that poorly lately and even Sanchez has kept us in the game unless we push him to 6th inning or beyond. K-Rod has been lights out with cardiac arrest occasionally. The problem has been 6-7-8 inning guys. Alex Wilson has been short of phenomenal but we can not use him as much as we have and not expect a problem, especially when he pitches multiple innings. One missed opportunity last night (I think) was not using Pelfrey. H has also just been activated and it was an opportunity to see how he is. Pelfrey (since he is a starter) is a guy who might give us 3 or 4 decent inning out of the pen when our starter fails early. He also throws a lot of ground balls.
These guys make so much money, sooo much money that if they win , well thats nice…ok… so we lose….no big deal beacuse we make sooooo muuuuch money!!!!……and win or lose…do good or do bad on Friday that paycheck for sooo much $$$$ is going to be there.
They do not live in our world!…not even close!
