Game 2016.21: A’s at Tigers

I guess J.D. Martinez doesn’t mind batting 2nd.

In a bit of a surprise yesterday, the Tigers announced that they will call up right-handed prospect Michael Fulmer, and move Shane Greene to the DL with a middle finger issue (of the blister variety, not the Ty Collins variety). Fulmer came to Detroit in the Cespedes trade, and is rated the #1 prospect in the system. Fulmer will start against the Twins Friday night.

This afternoon the Tigers finish off the 4-game series with the A’s with Anibal Sanchez facing righty Chris Bassitt. Bassitt was roughed up for 6 runs in 5 innings his last start, and has a fat 1.48 WHIP for the season, so it may be a good opportunity for the Tiger bats to keep booming.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. JD Martinez, LF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. Upton, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. Iglesias, SS
  8. Saltalamacchia, C
  9. Iglesias, SS
  10. Gose, CF

Casty still isn’t much of a defender…BUT he is still hammering the ball. Wow.!!

What I’ve noticed this year is that Casty’s really been laying off the unhittable pitches. Really looks good at the plate.

Jud, I don’t want to upset you but with 2 hits today already, you know we’ll have to rest him tomorrow.

Being probably the best hitter on the planet, we sometimes miss just how smart Miggy is as a total baseball player. On a routine fly ball with JD at third, he gives himself up by running to second. Not only does JD scores, Miggy ends up at 2nd when the A’s get confused.

With Iggy on and Gose both with speed , instead of hit and run or steal. Brad has Gose hit a dinger…Now thats good managing!!!

    Upton got a hit
    Upton got a RBI
    Upton got a hit
    Upton got a RBI
    Upton got a hit
    Upton got A RBI
….it was only one, but we don’t get to type it very often!

appears to be a typical outing for Sanchez, 5 IN, 5 BB’s, 1 HR (on the poz, he did have 8 K’s). WHIP up to 1.83. I would not bring him back out for the 6th…let him build on this (no meltdown inning) start.

…it didn’t hurt that the A’s are not a good hitting team

Coleman: Thanks for sneaking that update about Greene in the opening. It was funny.

Dee Gordon, reigning NL batting champ, gets 80 days for PED use. Didn’t see that coming (although there are those who are already jumping in with the “hey, new hitting coach–Barry Bonds!” line).

    Justin Verlander weighs in: http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2016/04/justin_verlander_blasts_ped_ru.html

I wonder if that will get me an asterisk on my Beat the Streak streak, since he was my pick for about 5 of those.

It’s a shame that as talented as Gordon is that he has made this mistake. I feel sorry that these young men do not realize the harm they are doing to themselves and their careers.

While I understand JV’s comments about being allowed to play during the appeal process, the CBS article does make valid points about the alternative of suspending them immediately. No system is perfect.
