Strike that. Ausmess sent him to the showers in favor of the Hardy boy.

And now Ausmus pulls Hardy after 2 fine K’s ——Arrrggghhhhh!!!
Let’s see if he pays for this one…..
(But at least it was Wilson he brought in. For a sec I thought it was going to be AL AL).

Fire Assmus…again!…instead of letting one guy who is pitching great continue..he, every frickin times thinks every pitcher will do the job. He screws this up 1000000000 times a year!

Don’t worry. We’ve got those prospects we can count on.

I’m right with you on this, jud.
He’s stuck in this “closer” BS box.

This time I will agree with MBA Asmus. Winning any ball game the remainder of this year is meaningless. JV pitched another gem and won’t get the win. So what, at 28 million or so, he can take one for the team. To me, Wilson is a nice ball pen addition but he can not be the closer next year. If Bruce is going to be that guy, then you need to start shaking him out this year. Yes, it could be ugly but that experience this year could be what makes him effective next year. If you look at Sandy Koufax form 1955 to 1959 or so you wondered why he was playing! Granted, I do not expect Bruce to be of Koufax quality but now is the time to start sorting players out. Hopefully, we will soon start seeing position players that can be evaluated for next year. The Tiger’s will not make the playoffs this year so if they come in 3rd or last in the division, it’s a big “Who Cares!”.

You make solid points, Tony. We tend to forget that that is probably the best possible thing Tigers can be doing now is “sorting players out” for future evaluation.
Also I know tbran is miffed at giving up our “gold” for prospects (at first I was too), but in the ultimate scheme of things, i.e., we’re not going to the postseason this year, it makes sense to prepare for the future now. IOW, let these prospects get “initiated into the Bigs” NOW, so that they’re ready when it really counts —-(next year?)

I agree, have to keep running Rondon out there to keep getting him experience.. he had a big burp today, BUT he has been very good for quite awhile. If he’s the guy!….lets find out….

Why can’t our guys PRACTICE BUNTING in their off time???

    1. jud Avatar

Been to a lot of Whitecaps, and Lakeland Tigers, and a few Mudhens games…..NO ONE in the entire organization Bunts!!!!…zero priority in the organization

Zero priority —–well that makes sense. Because you NEVER have a situation in the big leagues where a good bunt comes in handy. Right, Tigers’ farm system??

If we did this more often we would still be in the race…one slight blowpen screw up, but all and all…great pitching!..and if Victor did this more than once a month we would still be in the race!…

All in all, a good win, especially the Verlander contribution. Suddenly he’s the staff ace again. And good game for Collins.

I watched Little League all day today…not one bunt….I watch a lot of high school games..Softball HS and College the bunt is alive and well. HIGH SCHOOL and College baseball..it is a lost art!…also Sabermaticians ,the future of statistics will tell you the bunt is a worthless play…thats not my opinion but i pretty much keep up with this stuff. Jim Leyland and Brad Ausmus will tell you its a worthless play in their opinion…I won 636 high school games as a coach and bunted maybe 1000-1500 times, but I am old school all the way!

Sabermetrics is interesting, and has taken understanding of the game to new levels. But why does autocorrect hate the word? That’s enough to put me off it.

Wait, that wasn’t my point. I knew this guy who could barely hit the ball past the infield. But he was fast, and would bunt his way on, then steal 2nd. And sometimes 3rd. And the other team would get SO pissed off about it, it really threw them off their game. That. That’s the part they can’t measure yet, the things that get in their heads.

I currently work in the High school Softball game played at a very high level here in California. We take our 2.5-2.8 home to first players and put them on the Left side. They run and hit. If you watch NCAA Softball you see how amazing this speedd is. A lot of what you just said about the guy who couldn’t hit past the pitcher.
We are starting to see some carry over to baseball with players like Altuve, Igglessis, Dee Gordon. The one big difference though is none of them bunt…but their speed is what has them hitting over .300…

I didn’t do the research, so I don’t have figures to back this up. But I would challenge Leyland and Ausmus: Check stats of the good, winningest teams —-Cardinals, Dodgers, Pirates, and see when and how often, their managers employ the bunt.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a real telling search anyway. What would be interesting is to find the BUNTINGEST team, note their record, AND THEIR AVAILABLE TALENT, big or small, and determine if the addition of (especially, SAC)bunts to their offensive strategy is pushing them in the direction of achieving MORE or LESS.
In every case, I’m betting MORE.

i suspect both teams should put up some runs today – probably take a TD to win this one…
    1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
    2. Jose Iglesias, SS
    3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
    4. Victor Martinez, DH
    5. J.D. Martinez, RF
    6. Tyler Collins, LF
    7. Jefry Marte, 3B
    8. Alex Avila, C
    9. Anthony Gose, CF

i went to game last night, but bailed when Rondon gave up HR in 9th… and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

JV looked like a real pitcher last night – didn’t try to overpower everyone… mixed up his pitches (speeds, location, etc) well…don’t think he threw anything harder than 93-94 mph… hopefully a preview of things to come from JV.

NOTE: it was a 1-2 100mph fast ball that tied the game off Rondon in the 9th, reminding everyone that there’s more to pitching than just throwing hard…and that most MLB hitters can hit a fastball (95-100mph) if they know its coming and there’s not much movement on it.
