Game 2015.73: White Sox at Tigers

Yesterday was a bit of a throwaway game, what with Buck Farmer on the mound and Miguel Cabrera on the bench. Still, It was nice to see JD Martinez and Andrew Romine stay hot. When Romine led off the 3rd with a double and then stole 3rd, I thought maybe the Tigers had a chance to take this one. Alas, he was left there at 3rd, and that was that. Still, the Tigers won two-of-three on the road, so you have to call it a successful series.

After the game Brad Ausmus engaged in a bit of hat-tipping: “Carrasco was good. as much as you guys want to blame someone in this clubhouse, sometimes you’ve just gotta give them credit.”

Also after the game the Tigers passed the Buck back to Toledo. Farmer’s spot was taken by the much-anticipated Bruce Rondon, of whom I don’t expect much. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Today’s Let’s Start a New Win Streak Lineup:

  1. Rajai Davis, CF
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Yoenis Cespedes, LF
  6. JD Martinez, RF
  7. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  8. James McCann, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Romine is left to cool in this one. Hopefully he can stay crisp.

“I just thought it was a good time to give him a day off”.
A bit curious here, Brad: Cabrera ONLY hit Indians’ pitching for a .619 avg; in 9 games against The Sox this yr, his avg is .226.
My Q: Skip, wouldn’t it seem like today would have been a better time to give Superman that rare day off? In Ausmus’ defense tho, he did say that Miggy looked tired after Tuesday’s game. Well after hitting the way he did in that series, it’s hard for me to imagine him being SO tired that you couldn’t postpone his idle day by 24 hrs.
    Anyone else’s thoughts on this?

w/Buck Farmer starting yesterday, I’m OK with resting Cabrera – but by the same token; CLE was reeling and Cabrera has been slaying CLE pitching…and maybe they should have loaded up to complete the sweep, because a “win is a win”

now they better sweep CWS or at least take 3 of 4 – to make yesterday’s lineup more acceptable

Read another theory on this earlier today. Detroit fans definitely want to see Cabrera in action, thus eliminating half of the games to rest him. Plausible.

First of all, thank you to Coleman for picking me up on the post yesterday. I was traveling and completely lost site of the early game.

Miguel just had a really bad strikeout. I feel like every time that happens he hits a bomb next time up.

      Or…another really bad strikeout.

And they have Castellanos running on contact with the infield in. Any guess how that worked out? [sad trombone noise].

      NC of all people, WTF?!

To make it even worse, NC’s “on contact” = wait 2 seconds, THEN start.
Congrats on the 3b tho, Nick —-(tho we should have pulled you for a pinch runner right after it…..)

Alfredo Simon with some choice words for Rajai Davis.

I’m not watching – did Davis turn an out into a 2-run “double”?

      1. Coleman Avatar
        Coleman

Gose would have had it, Rajai turned the wrong way and lost it.

Rodon already at 86 pitches, Simon at 85 – setting the stage for dueling blowpens …with all the CWS lefties, may even see the Cheese-man (Gorgonzola) today.

Too many missed chances. Kinsler with the lame pop-up bunt, followed by Miggy with the inevitable GIDP.

Feel sick —- again, Davis can’t get the bunt down in obvious bunt situation. But Tigers get lucky. Then Ian does his bit, and I feel like I’m watching Little League. Cabrera’s screamer doesn’t find a hole this time. Depressing….

walks (1 HBP) the bases loaded, then gives up a 3 run triple to the #9 hitter batting .169

Joba was his razor sharp self!!!!!………Sox can’t score 8 in a week…but lucky they play the Tigers….meanwhile the Tigers put on 10000000000 runners and score 5….under .500 by Sunday!

Too bad Kinsler is no longer a productive force at the plate. Zero scare factor. I mean, I know he had a 2-run knock earlier, but he no longer looks like any kind of a “force” at the plate, like he did last yr & 1st portion of this season.
    Does this make sense?

Ausmus is not a smart man. This is the second time this year he’s sent in a pinch runner for one of our good hitters in the 9th trying to win it, only to have it come back and bite him in the aus in extras.

  23. jud Avatar
    jud

Come on Victor!…oh hes out of the game!!! Good job Brad…!!! You have done it again and again and again!…Kinsler should be batting 10 th anyway!

    1. StorminNorman$ Avatar
      StorminNorman$

…when he pulled VMart for a pinch runner (9th), it was after a single, and there were two outs!… at the time, I said to myself, oh you think you’ll need VMart in case this goes extras

Ausmus will say ‘had Cespedes got a double or hit one in the gap, VMart probably wouldn’t have scored…’

      1. jud Avatar
        jud

Yaddayaddayadda…..if Cespedes hits a home run he could walk around the bases .Assmus -2 second time ye has done this…in fact Assmus -25 for the 25 th time he had a runnet thrown out on the go on contact.in fact -27 cause it was the worst baserunner in the MBL…”when will he ever learn”……

      2. Coleman Avatar

        That’s not exactly a far-fetched scenario–Cesoedes is 3rd in MLB in doubles.

have no fear Tiger fans, help (Avila) is on its way!! Unless VMart was injured how/why would they ever DH Avila (as this article asserts)?

    …OK now I’m really depressed

I wasn’t following closely —-why did Bruce Rondon get only 1 inning, since he was lights out?
And Joba Chamberlain is NOT the solution for “set-up man” OR extra-innings work (unless he’s the last man standing), since the records show that invariably, he puts 1 on with a BB, 1 on with a 1B, or 2 BBs, and no need to imagine too hard what happens from there. One in fifteen outings, he gets lucky and looks good.

Yeah, Soria and Rondon could have carried us thru, but they get jerked after 1 short inning each (especially Rondon’s) ———WHY???
Oh, I know! Because Chamberlain is a great relief pitcher!
And Ausmus always pulls crap like this when extra innings are looming. What is he expecting? —-to rely on Romine to pitch the 16th or 17th? (Leyland clone….)
    @KW: Great pic!

I don’t have much problem with the bullpen rotation, those guys are really just 1 inning guys, and Rondon needs to ease in.

I think I’m with him on VMart this time. We would have ROASTED him had VMart been thrown out at home. It’s different than the Cabrera pull. VMart is not Cabrera.

    1. Kevin in Dallas Avatar
      Kevin in Dallas

And I hate to admit that.

      1. KW Avatar
        KW

Yeah, but that’s assuming Cespedes hits a double, or hits a single and then the next batter hits a single. But Cespedes popped up and the substitution was pointless. Even if Victor was somehow thrown out at home, at least you go to extras with him instead of without.

Are there other managers out there who would actually pinch run for one of their better hitters in a tie game with two outs when he’s not even in scoring position? I doubt it.

        1. Kaline fan Avatar
          Kaline fan

I think I would agree with you there, KW. But to be fair, this wasn’t one of Brad’s WORST in-game decisions. Had there been a gapper hit, bang-bang play at the plate and we score, it would have made Ausmus look genius-like ——(note the careful wording here).

          1. KW Avatar
            KW

How many times has Ausmus looked like a genius? I can’t think of any. You either don’t notice him at all, or notice that he made a boneheaded move. He’s the Castellanos of managing.

    Kinsler .146/.463…..1R…3RBI
    Casty.. 207/.637……OR…2RBI
    Gose… .171/.437…..6R…ORBI
