Game 2014.130: Yankees at Tigers

70-59, 2nd place, 1.5 games back, .5 WC games back. Lots of teams to watch these days.

I gotta admit, it’s hard to find the motivation to prepare for this series. The Tigers have been in a three month tailspin, peppered with just enough respites to keep hope alive.

You know, one of the DTW posters (can someone remind me) used to do a nice write-up every 18 games, calling them innings. There are 9 innings in a season (18 games x 9 = 162). The season is in the 8th inning. We’re turning it over to our bullpen, down by a run. Chad Qualls to save the day? As Smoking Loon pointed out, we’re still in it.

Lots of baseball left.

Rick Porcello on the mound tonight.

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
2. Torii Hunter, RF
3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
4. Victor Martinez, DH
5. J.D. Martinez, LF
6. Nick Castellanos, 3B
7. Alex Avila, C
8. Eugenio Suarez, SS
9. Rajai Davis, CF

Ok Loon’s Pep Talked fired me up…after all this is the Yankees and Little Ricky Porcello is pitching so let’s go Boys! KiD…that was Sam Hoff who used to do those season analysis by innings….that was some good analysis. BTW, where did Mr. X disappear to; lots of baseball is left!

Forget Chad Qualls. Don’t think that’s gonna happen. Watch Bartolo Colon. The Tigers have got to be thinking about it.

Why do you think they would be considering Colon?

Sanchez might be out for the season. If so, they need a starter pronto. Either that or go to a 4-man rotation. Lobstein isn’t going to cut it, and I shouldn’t have to even mention the other two.

If they get rained out, does that mean they have to do the Jeter love fest again too?

I like Jeter just fine, but after the Rivera thing last season, these season-long farewell tours are getting a bit stale. Does everyone get them, or only Yankees?

Amen! …to me the underlying theme seems to be manufactured sentiment in the name marketing

Manufactured sentiment in the name of the NY Yankees (oh wait, same thing as marketing!). At least we get a couple of years off until the next long-time NY Yankee retires – ARod. That would be an interesting farewell tour.

Does he have a date tonight as he is swinging at first pitches when McCarthy is erratic.

Nice job manufacturing a run..take a chance on the double…groundball (wrong place) but it worked..and base hit…I actually thought we were going to do this all year…this was a rare occurance of what the Tigers did to go 27-12 back months ago…..

The speed of Raji made that run.

KC wins in the ninth! The gods are with KC and those slugless Twins.

I watched the last 3 innings of the KC-MIN game…Nolasco (MIN starter), who’s been horrible all year, blanked KC on just 3 hits through 7, then a 1-2-3 8th by Burton and the table was set for All Star “closer” Perkins, who was going for his 33rd save… gave up a bloop single, then a HR to Gordon… Perkins didn’t get an out (5th BS of the yr)

KC has the mojo AND the easiest remaining schedule… DET’s margin of error (to win AL Central) is shrinking

BTW – There were only 13,847 fans in KC last night for the MIN game…meanwhile DET had their 8th straight sell-out (in the rain I might add) and their 23rd of the year. DET has drawn about 2.3M fans so far this year, while KC has drawn 1.4M…just sayin

The Tigers were supposed to run away with this, so even if the Royals are hyped up, its been a long dry spell in KC, and the fans (what there are of them) may not be believers yet. And the Yankees always draw well, because they are the Yankees, and as far as the Twins go, well they aren’t the Yankees. I also think that KC just isn’t as much of a baseball town as Detroit, but it is better than Tampa Bay.

Oh my goodness. One of the best wins of the season tonight. The complaints will fit in a thimble.

Highlights: Davis making a single into a double, and his skill at getting over to 3B, and Hunter knocking him in first pitch… All kinds of slick infield work, especially 1, 3, and 4, and also 5 and 6, and also 3 and 4. Did I mention 4 and 3?… Don’t how the J.D. RBI got by Drew, but the guy could do no wrong at the plate… The Castellanos swing on his RBI single… Rick Porcello was some kind of efficient wonderful… Nathan was A-OK, with HELP from the defense this time (imagine that)… The way most of the hitters kept chipping away at McCarthy. We’ve seen the alternate script too many times.

Kinsler had nothing but lousy at bats and Suarez was right there with him. Prado looked out on the FC – why no challenge? A “pick your spots” kinda thing? Seemed like a pretty good spot, men on 1st and 3rd. Miggy is frustrated with himself. I don’t think you swing with your ankle. I could be wrong. Why not just pitch around Ellsbury, Mr. Porcello and Mr. Ausmus? The second HR was aggravating.

I admit it: I like Rajai Davis in CF. Going forward.
