Game 2011.112: Tigers at Royals

Here’s a Penny for your thoughts:  Night Penny.

For some odd reason, Brad Penny’s turn in the rotation inevitably falls on a day with a daytime game.  12 of his 16 starts (75%) have been day games, while only 40% of the team’s overall games have been in the day.

And if you look at Penny’s career numbers on night vs day games, the numbers are like…well, like day and night.

  • Penny by day:  31-31, 5.27 ERA  (2011:  6-6, 5.21)
  • Penny by night: 84-65, 3.74 ERA (2011: 1-3, 4.24)

Rod and Mario have mentioned that Penny has said he doesn’t like day games.  And he doesn’t do that well in day games.  So here’s a crazy idea:  why not move the rotation around a bit to get him out of the day game pattern?

Tonight Rick Porcello looks to win his 6th consecutive start, which would be a career best, against Kansas City’s Felipe Paulino.  Porcello is 3-0, 3.15 since the All-Star break, and during that time has only given up 2 walks, against 13 strikeouts.

The Kansas City hitters, though, are on a bit of a hot streak, batting .309 over their last 7 games.  The hottest has been Alex Gordon, who has hit .474 over his last 9 games.

Today’s Player of the Pre-Game:  Wilson Betemit

Betemit makes the Royals pay for trading him.

Today’s Rather Standard Lineup:

  1. Austin Jackson CF
  2. Brennan Boesch LF
  3. Magglio Ordonez RF
  4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
  5. Victor Martinez DH
  6. Jhonny Peralta SS
  7. Carlos Guillen 2B
  8. Alex Avila C
  9. Wilson Betamit 3B

What the heck happened? GameDay showed that Austin had a Single to SS, but then was out at 2nd? Huh?

Over his past several outings Coke seems to be doing his best Brad Thomas imitation. The Tigers have to find some middle (5-8th) inning stability in their bullpen… but i’m not sure who or where that would come from other than Albuquerque…maybe Pauley

one of these teams’ bottom-of-the-order and bullpen is going to win this game tonight – let’s hope it the Tigers

Can someone explain to me where Avila & Schlereth were in the bottom of the 9th? A better hitting team doesn’t let you throw 15 out of 19 curveballs. And did anyone know that Giovatella was on 1st?

Mike Young tied it up with a bomb to straightaway center. Cle threatening in the top of the 10th.

Rangers just won on a bunt single by Andrus, advances to 2nd on a WP, and then scores from 2nd on a slow chopper infield single to short.

im going to mouth off some more in favor of dave dombrowski. if you can find a better candidate to steal for someone, maybe go that way.

dave d has turned this team into a yearly contender and with the pitching he drafts, veterans he signs, its likely to be a team in contention. he’ll probably never be in charge of a super star team without payroll, but his teams contend. blame managers for last month collapses and the likes. this is numerous years in a row you got a team to cheer for in the race, in the lead with dog days of summer left.

Here’s another memo for Leyland: Bonderpenny is now the official No. 5 starter – skip his turn whenever possible, day game or night.

Tigers situational hitting has been very good this year. Even with Inge, Jackson and Raburn fanning the breeze at a prodigious rate, they have managed .276 RISP (2nd in AL) and .260 RISP2O (1st). They rank lower in RS in those situations, probably partly due to Lamont waving all those guys into outs, but still….
