Game 2011.30: Yankees at Tigers

Seven in a row.  Say it ain’t so…Jim.  Unfortunately it is.  So where do we go from here?

Well, at least one MLB.com reporter thinks the Tigers have the best chance of the Twins, Tigers and White Sox to compete in the central.

Sizemore won’t be the only new spot in the order moving forward, as JL said today that Boesch will now bat 3rd, VMart 5th (starting tomorrow) and Maggs 6th.  The most depressing thing in that article was the note that Maggs has only hit two balls into the outfield in his last 26 at-bats. Yeah, two.  One was a single.  I’m wondering what Maggs has to do to lose his spot in the lineup.  Does he have pics of Ol’ Smokey that we need to know about?

CC Sabathia goes for the Yanks tonight looking to win his third consecutive start.  Though he has struggled recently in Comerica, going 0-3 with an 8.50 ERA in his last three starts there.  Sabathia pitched pretty well on opening day against the boys, giving up 2 ER (3 total) in six innings in a no-decision.

I’m going to go ahead and predict that Bad Brad will be the player of the game tonight.  But lookout for Cano who may be ready to play tonight.  So I reserve my right to change my player of the game.

Wells in for Boesch today against the lefty, then hopefully it will be a long time before we see a lineup like this.

1. Austin Jackson, CF
2. Scott Sizemore, 2B
3. Magglio Ordonez, DH
4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
5. Ryan Raburn, LF
6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
7. Casper Wells, RF
8. Alex Avila, C
9. Brandon Inge, 3B

AJax leading off again….Insanity is doing the same thing again and again, and expecting different results…

KJax will go 0-4 with 2 Ks. Sizemore will be 1 for 3 with a single and a walk. He will be stranded once, and erased by a GIDP once. Cabrera will be 1-1 with 3 walks. Magglio will have a small success with a popup, a GIDP, and 2 actual fly outs. Once again, the 1/3 spot lineup vacuum will debilitate the offense. But hey, hope I’m guessing wrong.

Made-up stat of the day: Bartolo Colon/CC Sabathia are the weightiest back-to-back starting combo in MLB history. Maybe some statnik will expose me, but I feel strangely confident…

I’m usually an optimist…….but looking at how Smoke on the Brain has constructed tonights lineup……we will need a miracle!
Why are KJax(2 K’s tonight) and Maggs batting in the top three again?
Smoke on the Brain should be released immediately and replaced by Charlie Sheen.

Oh, and Kevin, I think you meant Maggs has hit only 2 balls out of the INFIELD. Because he has hit nada out of the outfield. Even if you consider the warning track A’s counting as out of the outfield.

I love my iPhone, but I wish I could make it stop autocorrecting “as” to “A’s.” A couple DTW posts about the A’s, and now I seem to be stuck with this forever…

I was dismayed to see on another blog which shall go unnamed many anti-Verlander comments–some even suggesting trading him. Sure, he was hardly efficient, but bottom-line 3 runs in 6 vs the Yankees is a good start. He was a pleasure to watch, and I was enjoying how amped up he was–even fielding his position. He had 2 plays which put his Clown Show / Raburn Roulette defense to shame.

Verlander is a horse. Everyone seems to know it except for a few irrational Tigers fans.

Is it just me or is B. Penny going for the Brutus look (think Popeye)?

A little Brian Wilson beard dye, and we’ve got Brutus Penny.

Also Brad Penny likes to reflect back on his life; the choices he has made; his mistakes and successes; the people he loves. Which I respect. But in between each and every pitch??

It’s hard to believe the Yankees are featuring a DH hitting barely above the Ordonez Line.

Maglio has a co defendant — his name is Leyland. It is incomprehensible — ok I’ll add simply unreasonable — to keeping plugging Mags into the 3 hole out of “respect” for him or so that his feelings are not hurt. Last time I checked, this was still a team game.

      1. Coleman Avatar
        Coleman

Magglio 2011 < Gary Sheffield 2008. Except it's going to take even longer to get Magglio out of the lineup. He shouldn't be batting 6th either; he should be platooning with Carlos Guillen

Tonight’s fun fact. Right at this moment, Magglio’s OPS+ is 6. Yes, the number six.

My favorite paragraph from that cock-eyed optimist at mlb.com:

“It’s the Tigers, though, who are in the best position. For one thing, they’re the closest to contention. Their best players are playing well. Miguel Cabrera is once again putting up MVP numbers.

Only problem with this theory? They only have TWO best players. The other 23? Not so much.

No-K-Jax!!! If K-Jax starts hitting, all we have to do is finesse Magglio to the DL and we might have a decent offense…

And we need a good nickname for Sizemore

Sizemore up, Rhymes down is proving to be a huge improvement thus far.

I think we’re learning that Sizemore is actually a pretty good baseball player, who was seriously affected last year by trying to get comfortable in the majors while simultaneously working through a recovery… not the best recipe for success. And I base this not so much on a good day today as on his .390 average, which was a darn good argument for bringing him up a week ago.

Why does Leyland keep playing Ordonez + Inge? They are both HORRIBLE! Ordonez-158, Inge-213.

    1. scotsw Avatar
      scotsw

I can’t answer the Ordonez question, but Inge plays defense, and at .213, he’s not far off what you had to expect based on his infuriatingly consistent track record. He’s a below-average major-league hitter. Ever ’twas it thus with him.

  30. Coleman Avatar
    Coleman

Whale of a game by Brutus by the way. He’s still in the running for POG.

Now the question becomes: will we have to endure another Benoit baffler?

Stat of the night-going into tonights game Inge + Ordonez were hitting a combined 30 for 165. Thats a .181 avg.

How about Singglio + S-Inge-l. Neither one can hit!

    1. TBran in Troy Avatar
      TBran in Troy

I don’t want to start the Inge bashing (ok, I do) but no contender would play him as an every day player. Yes, he plays some good — not great — defense not. However, in my opinion (worthless, I know), his occasional circus act like plays cause people to unwisely conclude that he has gold glove ability. I disagree. He is glove is good but not great but his well proven lack of any offensive is unacceptable. He needs to ride the pine a lot more than he does. Soap box is now being put away.
