Game 2010.033: Yankees at Tigers

The Tigers were rained out for the second time in a week. This time though they’ll try to do a double header with this being the Yankees only trip to Detroit.

Rick Porcello will face off against Javier Vazquez in the early game. Both pitchers are off to rough starts.

Vazquez has combined a horrible walk rate with a career high fly ball rate (and subsequently 8 homers in 23.1 innings) to a 9.78 ERA.

Porcello is still getting ground balls (55%) but quite a few are turning into hits. He has a .339 BABIP against on ground balls and a normal rate is closer to .260. He’s also only stranding 58% of runners which is leading to longer innings and shorter outings.

someone tell me again why Everett and Laird are on a major league roster let alone bat back to back in the Tigers line up

How about Laird with the only hit while currently batting a buck fifty nine.

Kid Boesch rules. That triple he smoked on Monday sounded like the baseball exploded. 15 ribbies in 47 at-bats. Miggy has been prophetic so far: he gets big hits that win ball games.

Ugh, Inge. Too bad Boesch can’t play 3rd.

HUGE inning coming up here. Come on Porcello, 7 scoreless.

Outstanding. Perry then Valverde? Or do you let Porcello go one more. I’d prefer to bring in Perry, or Ni to get Tex from the right, and then Perry. I think Zumaya still needs to rest from Monday night.

Wow Inge really is dead weight in the lineup from the offensive side and continues to hit near his career average which isn’t good at all.

Inge needs to go 1 for 5 with a walk in his next six plate appearances and he will be exactly at his career average. He is awesome in his consistency.

I like Perry here. This is undoubtedly a huge confidence boost for Porcello. Great job kid.

It’s Perry and Valverde’s job to ensure that we win games like this.

I disagree. I like having Valverde out there. It’s a save situation. Go for the win while we can. You never know what will happen this evening. We’ve got a chance to win now, let’s go with it.

      2 down now.

Generally I’d agree with you, but Perry had only thrown 10 pitches. JL played it right, maybe Perry will be avail tonight.

I have to admit, if I were on the opposing team, I would not like it, and I would be looking for any way to get “payback”. Baseball doesn’t usually take such celebrating lightly.

They’ll hurt themselves if they try to run over Valverde, he’s a big dude. They just need to resign themselves to being mashed by the big potato and go about their business.

I haven’t seen too many folks here posting about what a lousy trade (Grandy for Coke&AJax) and free agent signing Valverde was/is… i know its early but… i’m just saying.

Also very little smack directed at DD in quite some time…

I’ll fess up and acknowledge i thought they paid too much for Damon and that they might have signed better/cheaper – i was wrong. But i will say that at the time i thought the Grandy/Jackson trade and the Valverde signing were good for now and the future… so far, so good.

    1. Steve Avatar
      Steve

SN, I was thinking Johnny d was a little over paid as well, but it sounds like he is a great locker room fit. So I was wrong there. I did not have a feeling on how A Jax was but boy you really have to wonder why the Yankees traded all that for Grandy. I love Grandy but hitting lefties was challenging and look what we got for him, A decent bullpen arm and a potential team changing / game changing center fielder.

Eitehr way i am happy where we are. Plenty of people would love to switch with us.

      1. stephen Avatar
        stephen

I will be the first to send Dombrowski flowers if Jackson hits above, say, .290 for the year. Right now, that trade looks like Dombro’s finest moment redeeming him for some of his bloated free agent contracts.

      2. Stormin Norman $ Avatar

no ‘declaration of vindication’ here – simply some observations… prefaced with disclaimers, such as “i know its early” and “so far, so good”

gotta love a committed ‘post master general’

  38. mat Avatar

Here here. They were good moves and most of the fanbase is only now accepting it…though I suspect once Jackson’s BA drops to around 270 and Granderson gets healthy and hot, you’ll hear more moaning. Damon and Valverde were good signings too, even after they cool of.

The good thing is that the hot starts will get some of the DD-haters to quiet down.

Kinda like I had to during Inge’s hot start last year. Speaking of….does anyone know where I can find individual player stats for LOB? I wonder if Inge has a shot at leading the league this season.
