The last 2 years Curtis Granderson has put on a celebrity basketball game as a fundraiser for his Grand Kids Foundation. Even though his status as a Tiger was in flux, his commitment to the kids wasn’t and Granderson announced that he will be hosting the event again this season.

This year’s game will be at Birmingham Seaholm on January 24th, and this one is sure to have a little bit of a different flavor. “This will also be an emotional event on a personal level, as it will be somewhat of a goodbye from me to the fans and the city that have supported me so strongly throughout my career so far,” says Granderson. “I hope that those fans can pack the gym and also raise a lot of money for inner city education in Michigan.”

I’ve attended both of the previous games and it makes for a great family event as all the participants seem to have a lot of fun and there is quite a bit of fan interaction.

This years squads will be coached by Lloyd Carr and new Piston Ben Gordon. Carr was a coach last year, and he’ll having returning player Desmond Howard on his team. Some of the confirmed players include Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, T.J. Duckett, Jeff Grayer, Jemele Hill, and Dana Jacobsen. There are usually some late additions to the roster as well so this list probably isn’t final.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for kids and there is a family 4 pack including 2 adult and 2 child tickets for $100. Tickets and other details are available at www.grandkidsfoundation.com.

Editors Note: Sorry for the lack of a cohesive post here. Things have been busy lately and while some of these topics might warrant a post, I know it won’t happen in a timely manner. Instead you are stuck with this concoction of stuff.

The Tigers really need to make a point of announcing Alan Trammell as the bench coach. He deserves a round of applause from Tigers fans. This is especially true since he unintentionally played into the Tigers marketing campaign when he said he’d “Always be a Tiger“…

Amber Grand sang the National Anthem on Sunday. Always a treat and I would like to see her in the rotation more often…

The nice thing about the Tigers playing from ahead is that they don’t have to make moves yet. They get to take a longer look at Ordonez/Guillen/Figaro/Galarraga to see what they really need. If they were trying to make up ground, they wouldn’t have that luxury…

Did Dontrelle Willis really refuse assignment? With the clarifications that Eddie provided on option refusal, the team has to submit a written request 4 days in advance. Willis bombed on a Sunday and was DL’d on a Thursday. The timeline would be at least circumstantial evidence to support the claim…

I enjoy keeping score at games. When I do road trips to other parks the scoresheet is my main souvenir. With a few ballparks under my belt the scoresheet by the Tigers is the best. When you combine layout, information, and value ($1) I haven’t found a better one. The worst? St. Louis. Expensive, the pencil costs extra, and it is basically a bunch of ads…

Rick Knapp has received lots of praise this year. As far as I know he’s doing a fine job and you can point to Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson and Fernando Rodney as pitchers who have improved under his watch. You can also point to Armando Galarraga who has performed much worse (and this goes beyond regression to the mean). I just bring this up because the Tigers and Indians are battling it out to see who will walk the most hitters in the AL. In all fairness though, with Willis out of the rotation it should help. Willis has issued 10.5% of the team’s free passes while only pitching 5.5% of the team’s innings.

Brandon Lyon’s walk numbers don’t look too good with 16 in 35 innings. But 6 of those are intentional walks and that leads the AL. Second place on that list is Justin Verlander with 4, 2 of which were to Albert Pujols…

My favorite player for the Lakeland Flying Tigers is Robbie Weinhardt…

I think spending a game as a member of the grounds crew would be really cool. But probably not for one of those games with lots of rain delays…

Lost in the euphoria of last night’s walk-off win the fact that the Cubs had been walking off against the Indians all weekend escaped me…

A quick look at some former Tigers and their performances in their new homes:

Gary Sheffield

Sheffield is in the midst of that bounce back season that many were hoping for, and few were expecting. He has a 292/433/521 line and is walking in one out of every 5 plate appearances. And Mets fans are loving it.

I wasn’t in the camp that “Sheffield was done” in the sense he couldn’t hit anymore. But I was (and still am) in the camp that said Sheffield couldn’t stay healthy anymore. Fortunately the Tigers are winning and offensive struggles haven’t been prolonged or else we’d be hearing about what a mistake it was to let Sheffield walk.

Matt Joyce

I like Matt Joyce. I like him a lot. I don’t like him like him, but I do think he’s a very good player. He has toiled primarily at AAA where he has a 315/408/530 line. He was just recalled to the Rays and he homered yesterday. He only has 15 PA’s at the big league level but has homered twice already.

Guillermo Moscoso

The centerpiece of the deal that brought Gerald Laird to Detroit was just called up to the Texas Rangers. In his first appearance he went an inning allowing 2 hits with 1 strikeout.

He had been pitching fairly well for the Rangers Double A affiliate. He had a 7.7 K/9 rate and fanning 2.5 for every batter he walked. He only allowed 1 homer in 42.1 innings.

James Skelton

The little left handed hitting catching prospect was selected by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft. Arizona didn’t want to keep him on the big league roster and the Tigers didn’t want him back too much (they got Brooks Brown as compensation). He’s playing for the Arizona Double A team and has a .376 OBP. But he’s only hitting .221 and with only 7 extra base hits his slugging is south of .300.

Sad news from Northboro today as fabled Tigers pitcher Mark the Bird Fidrych was found dead underneath his pick-up truck. Describing Fidrych at this point is a worthwhile exercise because everybody, and I mean everybody, knows about the charismatic Tigers Rookie of the Year from 1976. Being two years old at the time, I have no recollection of the Fidrych phenomenon beyond clips and stories. What I do know is I wish I had been in Tiger Stadium one of the magical nights he was pitching.

Lee Panas, who authors Detroit Tiger Tales, cites Fidrych as a major part of his fandom

I’ve been following the Tigers since 1968 and Mark Fidrych’s 1976 season was the single most thrilling individual season of my lifetime. Whenever I see that game against the Yankees that they show on ESPN or the MLB channel from time to time, I immediately go back 33 years to that night and remember how I felt watching the same game on television. It’s difficult to explain the Mark Fidrych experience to those who were not there to see it.

Lee remembered the 30 year anniversary of Fidrych’s 1976 season by chronicling it on his blog.

Sad news for the Tigers family today with the passing of Hall of Famer George Kell. Kell of course was the Tigers third baseman for a spell in the 40’s and later became an institution as a broadcaster. In addition to his broadcasting work, he was largely responsible for bringing Ernie Harwell to Detroit after the two had met in Baltimore.

I grew up watching Kell and Al Kaline on the WDIV broadcasts and his southern drawl is etched into my memory. I remember the way he’d say “They’re gonna wave him home!” with a runner coming around third. Or the way he’d say even mundane phrases like “and the Tigers’ll be in Arrrrrrlington on Tuuuuuesday night.” At a press event at The Henry Ford museum I had to chance to speak with Mr. Kell for a few moments, and just hearing his voice made me feel a little bit warm. Rest in Peace Mr. Kell.

UPDATE: Just got this info from Fox Sports. They will be airing some Kell related programming tomorrow night. Also some quotes from Mario Impemba and John Keating.

On Wednesday (7:30 & 10:00 pm) and Sunday (12:30 & 4:00 pm), FOX Sports Detroit will re-air its 2005 half-hour special titled “FSN Basement: All-Star Edition,” featuring interviews with George Kell and Al Kaline, each recalling their numerous All-Star Game appearances, memories of playing for the Tigers and their years working together in the television booth.

Mario Impemba, Tigers play-by-play announcer, FOX Sports Detroit –

“Growing up in Detroit, Mr. Kell had a big impact on my desire to become a broadcaster. He had a unique voice that featured a smooth southern charm. People knew they were watching Tigers baseball when they heard George’s voice every summer.”

John Keating, TIGERS LIVE host, FOX Sports Detroit –

“One of the highlights of my broadcasting career was our trip to interview George at his home in Swifton, Arkansas…. just to talk baseball and his place in Detroit’s sporting history. He was gracious and warm to those of us who were still involved with the Tigers. He still watched every Tigers game and enjoyed it with no regrets about stepping away from the broadcast booth. To those of us who grew up with George and Al and Ernie and Paul Carey, they shaped the standard for broadcasting sports in our town. It is less of a ‘bright and sunshiny day’ in Michigan.

Things started out so promising with the acquisitions of Gerald Laird and Adam Everett. And they end so disappointingly with the loss of James Skelton and Matt Joyce. To be fair the Skelton thing was set in motion weeks ago when the Tigers chose not to protect a young athletic lefty catcher with a 416 career minor league OBP.

Rule 5

It was little surprise that Skelton was selected. It will also be little surprise if it turns out to be a non-event, but it’s the reasoning behind it that is so troubling. The Tigers chose to protect lesser players like Eddie Bonine, Mike Hessman, Macay McBride, and Alfredo Figaro while leaving Skelton vulnerable. The Diamondbacks took advantage of the Tigers mistake. Arizona does have 2 young catchers though so there is a chance Skelton could get returned. The Tigers ’sphere tends to hate this too.

The Tigers did get a lefty in the form of Kyle Bloom. He had some decent numbers at AA and a fine Hawaiian league season. Don’t know if he’ll stick as a LOOGY but if he is a John Parrish deterrent that’s fine enough by me.

Edwin Jackson

There’s been a lot of talk that Edwin Jackson was a good pick-up. Beyond the ERA and fast fastball I don’t see it (don’t even bother win 14 wins which is completely meaningless). The Spot Starters further illustrate the point by showing just how bad Jackson was – in what was supposed to be his breakout year. There are too many discouraging numbers to copy and paste, so please check out his research.

I think it is safe to call the Edgar Renteria-Jair Jurrjens/Gorkys Hernandez deal “the trade that just keeps taking.” There was hope that the Tigers could salvage a couple draft picks out of the trade, but that possibility is now gone as the team has declined to offer Renteria arbitration.

All players are classified according to Elias as Type A or Type B or other. For pending free agents, teams can offer a player arbitration. If the player declines arbitration and signs elsewhere the team receives compensatory picks if they were Type A (a first or second rounder and a pick between the two rounds) or Type B (a pick between the first and second rounds). Edgar Renteria was a Type A meaning the Tigers would have been in line for 2 picks and giving them likely 3 picks in the top 50-60.

I’m quite disappointed that the team decided to walk away and not try and get the draft picks. The downside is that Renteria accepts arbitration. The likely scenario would then be that he would sign for about $9 million on a one year deal. Which despite last season wouldn’t have been the end of the world. Especially considering the Tigers are being linked to Julio Lugo’s and Alex Cora’s and other shortstops who are deficient in at least one area.

Yes, a $9 million exposure is probably more than the team wanted. But that risk could have been mitigated by cutting Renteria in the spring and paying him what amounts to a sixth of his salary and walking away. Plus, Renteria has been garnering interest from other teams and would probably choose a 2 year deal over the one year he could get in arbitration (although the new team may find him less attractive if they had to surrender a draft pick).

This seemed to be a low risk move with the worst case scenario being that Renteria was inked to a one year deal. The best case was the Tigers salvage something out of the trade and add some high ceiling talent to the organization. I understand that it may be bad etiquette and it may be viewed unfavorably by other players, to offer a contract with the intent of cutting while driving down the value on the open market. I honestly don’t know how much weight that should carry. But the Tigers need some wins this offseason. This doesn’t appear to be one.

A flurry of link worthy items, plus just being behind in general leads to the mother of all link round-ups:

Injuries – left handed pitcher edition

Bless You Boys picked up a Buster Olney report that scouts were speculating that Dontrelle Willis may be injured. That could certainly be part of his control problems. Then again, Willis has battled increasing control issues the last couple years so it may be a continuation of a trend. But it sounded like Tigers scouts were confident that the problem had been licked. But what if it isn’t?

Assignable cause is always nice when trying to identify shifts in output (I’m an industrial engineer by trade). Usually if you can find the assignable cause and fix it. But in this case fixing it may mean rest & rehab or even surgery if there is an elbow problem.

Big League Stew has some more. Well, not much more but I like BLS and there’s a cool picture.

Things aren’t going well for Clay Rapada either who is experiencing more soreness.

Injury news – right handed pitching edition

Fernando Rodney was examined by the team orthopod and no structural damage was found and he will resume throwing. That’s the good news portion of this update.

Injury news – blogging center fielder subsection

Let’s hope Granderson heals as fast as he gets out of the box for triples. The mending time is estimated to be really quick where he only misses the first week (via John Fuller, his publicist/manager type guy) or it could be a month if Chone Figgins can be used as a comp. While he could probably start swinging the bat right away, it will likely effect his grip strength. And man, I’d imagine hitting in cold weather would be especially painful.

In his stead Edgar Renteria will leadoff and Brandon Inge will manner center field – at least initially. I have a felling there will be some mixing and matching with Ryan Raburn perhaps getting some extra at-bats as well.

Interviews

Speaking of Granderson, The Grandy Report was able to interview him last week. It turns out Granderson’s favorite subject was math. I wonder if he’s a saber?

Also, Dontrelle Willis got together with Ryan Howard and David Wright during a Topps shoot. Willis grabbed the mike and conducted the interviews himself. This interview keeps getting taken down, so catch it while you can.

THE CONTRACT

I think it’s only appropriate that THE TRADE spurred THE CONTRACT. There is little new news about THE CONTRACT except that it is a 7 year extension as I had speculated initially. My guess on how it breaks out is $15 million in 2009 and then $21 million in each of 2010-2015. It hasn’t been officially announced, but it hasn’t been denied. And Cabrera’s Dad seemed to confirm it to a Venezuelan newspaper. (translation via Google)

“We were expecting this contract,” said Cabrera Navas. “There were two very important things for him to accept the deal: first, that there are other Venezuelans, as Magglio (Ordoñez) and Carlos (Guillen), and second, that we have a good chance to win and go to a World Series.”

The story also said that there are incentives for MVPs, All Star Games, and the like.

Mack Avenue Tigers beat me to the punch and rounded up the opinions on the valuation of the deal. The opinions vary greatly. I’m still sticking with my initial feelings that it is a pretty fair valuation for both sides. In terms of Cabrera’s actual value it seems fair. In terms of Cabrera’s perceived value it appears to be favorable for the club.

Leftovers

Finally wrapping this thing up we look to the Marlins who decided to send Cameron Maybin to the minors for more seasoning. Probably a good move and Maybin will probably still be the starting centerfielder by the end of the year. But Jair Jurrjens locked up a spot in the rotation after a strong spring.

And lastly, Brennan Boesch had some bathroom problems today.

Former Tigers first baseman Sean Casey reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox and will be the primary back-up at first base. Curt Schilling is pretty excited about the move citing Casey’s nice guy/solid teammate reputation. But Schilling goes a step further and relates a story about Sean Casey and a Sharpie.

Each year at the All Star game the participants are given a jersey to autograph which is then auctioned off for charity. Casey somehow was down a couple jerseys and ended up having to autograph his game jersey.

He tells the story and it generates a huge laugh, and I them comment that since he autographed it, he should take a black sharpee into the field with him when he plays, and have each player that gets to first base autograph his shirt as well.

He actually TOOK the black sharpee in his pocket, onto the field with him. I am not sure who he told, but I know he told more than one player about it, and it was hilarious to watch guys at first base start cracking up as he told them the story.

So in the end he got the better of everyone because he had players autographing his jersey while they were standing on first base.

Casey only played in the 1999 and 2001 All Star games, meaning that his Sharpie-ness predated Terrell Owens’s Sharpie stunt by a full season.

At the start of the 2006 season the Tigers had a log jam at first base with Dmitri Young, Carlos Pena, and Chris Shelton set to man that position and DH. Pena was jettisoned in the spring, while Dmitri Young battled legal and substance abuse problems spending a chunk of the season on the DL in rehab. Meanwhile Chris Shelton was ripping the ball in April putting up Ruthian numbers.

Fast forward to September 2006. Dmitri Young is released during a rain delay, Chris Shelton is toiling in the minors, and the Tigers have traded for Sean Casey who isn’t hitting a lick.

Fast forward to October 2007. Chris Shelton is still in the minors as he used up his last option year. Sean Casey slugged on the wrong side of .400 when as a first baseman .400 is the wrong side of .500. And Dmitri Young and Carlos Pena win comeback player of the year awards in their respective leagues.

You can lament the Tigers moves, but they were also defensible. Young had a lot of problems last year, and they were problems he wasn’t solving in Detroit. And while I was against releasing Pena, he floundered all of last year and barely sniffed playing time with the Yankees and Red Sox and was even cut this year in Tampa. Again, I don’t think he has this type of season if he’s still with Detroit.

So instead of being frustrated, I’ll simply say congratulations to Dmitri Young for getting his life and career back on track. And congratulations to Carlos Pena for realizing his potential before it was too late.

Rod Allen has had a very varied 30 year career in professional baseball. His current gig is as the color commentator for Tigers broadcasts on FSN alongside Mario Impemba.

The 2007 season will mark Allen’s 5th season in Detroit. While he, along with pretty much everyone associated with the Detroit Tigers, toiled in relative obscurity the first few years, his calls during the 2006 season are now part of Tiger lore. The very genuine “CRAIG DID IT AGAIN” call after Monroe’s 9th inning homer in Yankee Stadium captured the emotion and excitement that all Tiger fans were experiencing at that time.

Rod was kind enough to do an interview with me over the phone. We talk about the 2006 and 2007 Tigers, Allen’s career, and I ask him “Who’s your Tiger?”

———————-

DTW: This year will mark your 30th year in professional baseball since you were drafted in 1977. You were a part of a World Series champ as a player, and you were also a broadcaster when the D-backs won it all. Where does 2006 rank for you in terms of special seasons?

Rod Allen: Probably 2nd. As a player in 84 that was pretty special because I made the team out of spring training. So that’s always going to be number 1. But I didn’t play that much in 84. I was sent down to the minor leagues part way through. But they still gave me a World Series ring, they still gave me a share. But I really wasn’t able to share in all the champagne celebrations and what not because I wasn’t in uniform at the end of the year. But it’s special anytime you get around a group of guys and you’re able to accomplish a goal of winning a world championship.

But I’d have to say 2nd to that was last year because it came out of nowhere – even though I predicted at the beginning of the year that we’d be a championship caliber team. No one else really believed it. Just to watch that team and everything come together, to watch the excitement of the Detroit fans and the whole history of the team probably made it a little more special than Arizona.

Arizona was just so new. They really didn’t even know they had a baseball team, and I mean that jokingly. But there’s 100 years of baseball tradition in Detroit. And they’d had so many losing seasons, but just to see so all the people come out last year was amazing.

DTW: Last year you went out on a limb on Opening Day and predicted the Tigers would win the Central – and you were darn close to being right. What are your thoughts for this year, or are there certain things you need to see first in spring training?

Rod Allen: I probably won’t go out on a limb and saying anything like that. But I will say that I think the Tigers have the best offensive ball club in baseball. They don’t have guys that walk a lot as far as on base percentage is concerned. But they added Casey for the entire year and Sheffield for the entire year and I think both of their on base percentages are close to .400, which is outstanding. And you added on a career .300 hitter to the middle of the lineup. It’s going to be a dangerous lineup.

Everybody would probably say the Yankees have the best offensive team, but I think the Tigers have the best offensive team. I really do. And I think they’re going to put up some huge numbers offensively.

DTW: That’s interesting because the Tigers strength is typically cited as their pitching. What do you see from them in 2006?

Rod Allen: Well they’ve got some of the best pitching in baseball as well. A lot of people are worried about Verlander and the innings he logged last year. Zumaya had a little bit of a wrist thing going on at the end of the year. People wonder if Rogers can duplicate what he did last year. But I think pitching is their strong suit. They’ve got some more youngsters coming too.

As long as they stay healthy I’ think they’ll be the class of the division again. With that being said with their offense and pitching staff they have a pretty good chance of once again playing meaningful games at the end of the year.

DTW: Do you see the wild card coming out of the Central or will it be heading back to the East?

Rod Allen: It’ll probably go back to the East this year, I really do. But there are still some good teams in the Central. The White Sox won 90 games last year.

The Twins, I’m not really sold on them even though they play hard every year. Ron Gardenhire their manager and Terry Ryan their general manager do a marvelous job. They always seem to pick the right people. But I just don’t think they’re in the same class the Tigers are – even though they won the division last year. On paper I don’t like that team nearly as much as I like the Detroit’s team.

DTW: Speaking of the wild card heading back to the East, the Red Sox added Daisuke Matsuzaka from Japan. Having played for 3 years in Japan, you’re very familiar with Japanese baseball. What kinds of things are you hearing about Matsuzaka? What are you expecting from him? Did you ever face a gyroball?

Rod Allen: No one was throwing the gyroball while I was there, but they had a pitch they called the Shooto which was where right-handers could make a ball run in on the right-handed batter hand – almost like a screwball type pitch. They threw a lot of those.

When I played over there, there were probably only 2 or 3 guys who could have come over to the States and play and compete. Since then there have been so many that have come over, that either they’re getting better or we’re not as good, or dominant, as we used to be as players.

As far as Daisuke, I don’t know that much about him. I’ve heard he’s got a very good arm and control of 4 pitches. But it remains to be seen until he gets into Boston and appears in Yankee Stadium under that kind of microscope.

DTW: You were working for the Diamondbacks and living in Arizona (where you still live). What is it that made you want to come to Detroit, and after (or during) that 2003 season were you second guessing your decision?

Rod Allen: I second guessed my decision as soon as I made it to be honest with you. The reason why I did is because so many people in Detroit while I was doing my introductory interviews asked me that same question, probably 5 or 6 times. People asked me why would you want to leave the weather, and your home, and a winning team to come to Detroit? I started to wonder myself why all of you in Detroit are there, but you’re asking me why I’d come there.

But also it was a decision I needed to make. If I was going to grow as a television analyst I had to do it someplace else because the job was promised to Mark Grace when he signed as a free agent 3 years before that. When they brought him over from the Cubs they promised that when he was done playing, he’d be the television analyst. It didn’t matter how well I did or how poor I did, that after that season I was going to need to find another job – either doing radio locally or television someplace else.

And then everything started to come together in Detroit. The whole 84 thing with Trammell and Parrish, and then Gibson moving downstairs. I knew Dombrowski from my prior days as a player and a coach in 2 organizations where he had been. It just seemed like a nice fit. But it didn’t hit me that I was leaving Arizona until I was offered the job. It was an extremely tough adjustment.

DTW: Your baseball career is pretty varied, with a solid minor league career, time in the Majors, playing in Japan, a coach, and now a broadcaster. Is the booth your final baseball destination or would you like to get back on the field or perhaps work in the front office?

Rod Allen: I would probably go down on the field before the front office. You know, I’d like to manage at some point in time. There have been some announcers that have left the broadcast booth and gone downstairs and been very, very successful. But the one thing I continue to fight is that I don’t have a lot of name recognition as a guy who played a long time in the big leagues. I think that hurts me from time to time in doing National gigs because a lot of times in this profession the bigger the name the more people they think are going to watch.

I think sometimes if you don’t have a huge name you’re going to get passed over by guys who have bigger names than you do. That doesn’t mean they’re better, just that they have a bigger name and that’s the appeal to the networks here in the United States. I know I’ve run into that already on several occasions. But even given that I’m still extremely grateful for the opportunity that’s been given to a guy like myself, without the big name recognition, to be able to broadcast games in Detroit on television is a tremendous honor.

But that’s no reason to quit. I know I’m a good announcer. I know I’m good at what I do and I’ll continue to wait my turn. But I think that’s what’s hurting me from getting a managers job is the fact there isn’t a lot of big league name recognition associated with the name Rod Allen as there has been with Larry Dierker, or Bob Brenly, or Jeff Torborg, or Joe Torre. These guys have done the exact same thing that I’m doing but they have been given opportunities to manage. If it happens great, I’d welcome an opportunity like that at some point in time, but I don’t really ever expect that to happen.

DTW: What is a typical work day like? What types of research do you do, what is your routine when you get to the park?

Rod Allen: It really starts a couple days prior for me. Say we have the Minnesota Twins coming to town. I might get on their website a couple days prior and start to read some of the clips coming out of Minnesota. I may go back to MLB.com and watch the opposing pitcher’s last start so I have a pretty good idea what he’s doing in certain situations. I can do that from home or my hotel room.

If you’re playing a team on that particular day you’ll pick up the newspaper and read all about that team and research on the internet to see if there are any questions you might have.

When you get to the ballpark about 4:00 that’s when you start asking question to some of the things that you read so you can validate it. You don’t want to say things with out validating them. So you find out what the truth is to some of the things you’re reading.

Then you go from there. That’s just the information you compile. If you have a good game, obviously it takes precedence over any of that information you’ve compiled. But if you have a bad game – and you have a lot of bad games over a 162 game schedule – that’s when you go to some of the information that may be interesting for your listeners to hear.

DTW: As a former player, and someone who has been with the club, and been around the players on a daily basis for the last 4 years, just how much of a difference did Jim Leyland make? Or did he benefit from better health and better talent?

Rod Allen: I think he was the absolute difference maker – without question. It was one of the most spectacular managerial jobs I have ever seen. For him to take that team with a losing attitude and losing culture, and not only the team but he changed the culture for the state, for the city, and for all Tigers fans. It was an unbelievable job done by a magnificent manager.

No disrespect to Alan Trammell, but he had never managed before and it’s a tough job to do. It goes back to what I was saying about myself, that would be like me getting an opportunity to go downstairs and manage. Although, I do manage upstairs pretty much all the time. I do a lot of first-guessing, I know what’s going on. You surround yourself with good people, and you allow the good people to work, and you kind of do your job.

Without question Jim Leyland was the difference maker in that team’s run to the World Series last year.

DTW: Finally, the question that everyone in Detroit has an answer to: Who’s your Tiger?

Rod Allen: You know, I really don’t have a Tiger, but if I were to name one I’d say Pudge Rodriguez. For just the type of energy that he plays with every single day, To play that position at age 35, 13 time All Star, 12 time Gold Glover, he’s won an MVP. He’s going to go down as one of the two best catchers in the history of the game, whether you like him or Johnny Bench. Most old guys like Bench, most young guys like Rodriguez.

For a guy of that stature, 5’ 9” to dominate at that position, to dominate a game, to shut down running games. A couple years ago when no one else would come to Detroit, people said “he came for the money.” Well of course he came for the money, no kidding. Most guys go for the money. But as soon as he put that uniform on, the team was back on the map once again.

He’s my guy. He’s the guy I enjoy watching on a day-to-day basis. He’s the guy who takes all the heat in the organization. He’s just a bona fide superstar. For him to stop by Detroit for the last 5-6 years of his career (if he stays that long) Detroit fans should be absolutely elated. Any time you have Al Kaline saying it’s the best free agent signing the Tigers have ever had, there’s some truth to it.

DTW: I have to agree with you on Rodriguez as the best catcher of all time, and what I think differentiates him is his baserunning. He’s a 35 year old catcher and he was the best baserunner on the team.

Rod Allen: And he maybe the fastest as well. He’s a dedicated player. He gets rubbed the wrong way because he’s a superstar and everybody wants his time and everybody wants a piece of him. And sometimes if everybody doesn’t get a piece of him, that’s when the media starts to write negative things about you. I’ve been around a lot of superstars. I’ve been around Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr. Guess what, they all act the same way. It’s something about those guys that makes those guys as good as they are. And maybe it’s that edginess and their unpredictability and that they just don’t give you everything you want.

——————–
I’d like to thank Rod Allen for taking the time to chat with me. When I was preparing for the interview, I noticed that Allen’s page at Baseball Reference hadn’t been sponsored yet. That spot is vacant no more and now Detroit Tigers Weblog is the sponsor of Rod Allen at Baseball-Reference.com.

I was getting jealous of all the reporters and photographers down there in Lakeland taking in baseball and sun and palm trees. So I did the best I could and went to Comerica Park today to take pictures of ice sculptures…Leftover from Tigerfest…Which was a month ago. So stop complaining Wojo if it’s unseasonably cool in Lakeland. (Seriously, I took these pictures today.)

On to the link-a-thon

Carlos Guillen

An extension for Guillen is the only item remaining on the Tigers checklist. It is also a popular topic of discussion. This is a bigger topic than I’m going to tackle in a round-up post. Kurt has it covered anyways. I will say that I don’t think Guillen will sign here with the intention of playing first base. Just because he filled in there last year, doesn’t mean that is his likely destination – at least not for the next 3-4 years.

Random Stuff

Inge gets, Inge gives

George Kell gets in an accident. George has had a rough couple years.

Rodriguez isn’t slowing down. Barring a pretty major trade, the Tigers will most assuredly pick up Pudge’s option for 2008. It’s a $13 million option with a $5milion buyout. With no replacement in site, and Pudge being still quite productive this is kind of a no-brainer.

The first day of spring training every year brings pitchers fielding practice. Today was no different, except for the fact that there were 50 media assembled to see if the Tigers pitchers could throw the ball to third base. Now let’s move on.

They wear many hats

That section headline reminds me of a clue that Chuck Woolery would have given on Scrabble back in the day. In this case though it refers to the new hats the Tigers are sporting. Either New Era or the Tigers have added goofy white detailing the the Tigers BP hats. Not really a big fan and I can’t imagine fans clamoring to buy them. I’ll keep an eye on Uniwatch for more information.

Three out of 10 GMs prefer Yankees

MLB.com polled the 30 general managers to get their preseason picks for World Series champs. The Yankees and Red Sox dominated getting 17 of the 30 votes, but 2 GMs picked the Tigers.

“With the pitching staff they have and adding Sheffield makes the Tigers an easy favorite for me,” one manager said.

Added another: “As long as that pitching holds up, they’re the team to beat.”

Position players continue to arrive

Cameron Maybin has appeared in Lakeland, as have Craig Monroe and Carlos Guillen. Roger DeWitt reports that Craig arrived in a large limo. To quote Rod Allen: “Craig, get down with your bad self.” Mostly I just mention this so I could use the photo and the caption that Maybin is “bracing” for something.
