Comments on the experience of being a Tigers fan, including views on Comerica Park and fan relations.

Visiting the Jake

P1050487I took the family down to Jacob’s Field this weekend and caught the Sunday tilt. Luckily it was one of the wins.

I had been to Jacob’s Field back in 2002, but a lot had changed since then. They added a park behind the trees in centerfield celebrating Indians history and their stars. It is very well done and a really cool place. Didn’t think to snap any pictures of that.

They’ve also expanded the scoreboard making it the largest. But unlike the Comerica Park scoreboard which it surpassed, it displays a ton of information:
P1050521
While Comerica Park does display more stats than it used to, it just never seems to effectively use all the real estate.

The other thing that was very different was the mix of fans. In 2002 the Indians were still relevant while the Tigers were still a joke. This time I saw just as much Detroit gear as Indians clothes. There were also a ton of empty seats – way more than you’d expect for a battle between the top 2 teams in the division. The announced attendance was over 30,000 but there weren’t nearly that many in the stands.

Our section was high above home plate, and it seemed that we were in Comerica Park given the mix of fans. It almost seemed like Ticketmaster gave everyone with a Michigan Ip address seats together. Despite taking over sections of the stadium, the Tribe fans we encountered were pretty friendly. I think the Cavs win over the Pistons helped to smooth any rough edges.

P1050515As for the game itself, Jeremy Bonderman was dealing. After a couple hard hit balls in the first inning, he didn’t allow another hit until the 7th. Any concerns about the blister seemed to have vanished. I did notice that Bonderman did throw at least a half dozen balls back to the umpire. There was theorizing that the stitches were higher this year, and I wonder if with returning so many balls if that’s what he was trying to avoid.

The offense continued to produce, and looking at the linescore you’d never know that the Tigers were missing 2 key components. Neifi Perez takes a lot of abuse, but he did a fine job filling in for the last week. He’s never going to hit a ton, or even a couple pounds, but that’s not really his job. He’s the last guy on the bench, and save for one error he turned in some solid defense. He also put together a few nice at-bats including a walk on Friday night well try to lay down a sac bunt. He also had an extended at-bat on Sunday where after falling behind 1-2 he saw 6 more pitches before hitting a grounder to short scoring a runner from third. He also knocked a few line drives that ended up in gloves.

Perez is the last guy on the bench and he’s getting playing time that reflects it this year. A big part of the problem last year was that Omar Infante was a better option and was left to languish on the bench due to one error while Perez continued to not produce. I’m not saying Perez is a good player, or that acquiring him was a good idea. But as the last guy on the bench, it really isn’t a big deal.

Stuff that doesn’t fit elsewhere

You may have noticed I’ve been doing a little something different with link posts. I’ve been posting things to del.icio.us throughout the day, and then del.icio.us will dump them all into a blog post. It’s nice and convenient for me, but I don’t have as much room to comment. So tonight I’ll go old school.

Schedule Changes

The Tigers have had a couple start times change, and had a couple of their rainout make ups added. The May 26th game against Cleveland and the June 23rd game against the Braves have been moved from 7:00pm to 3:55pm and are now part of the Fox National package. The June 16th game originally scheduled for 3:55 on Fox was moved to 7:00pm and will be on FSN Plus.

The Toronto rain out/cold out will be made up on September 10th at 7:00pm and will be televised on FSN Detroit.

The White Sox rain out will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader with a 2:00pm first pitch on July 24th. It’s in the middle of a string of 16 consecutive games without and off day, so an additional starter will need to be called up.

Bondo ready to return

Danny Knobler reports that Jeremy Bonderman looks likely to return to the rotation on Friday night. The Tigers are already doing enough mixing and matching with their arms, so getting things back to normal will be nice.

Infante to change at-bat music

From the same Knobler piece, we find out Placido Polanco’s and Omar Infante’s at-bat music. I’ve long said that my favorite at-bat music for any Tiger is Infante’s so finding out artist (Tono Rosario) was great. But finding out that Infante planned to change it was disappointing to say the least.

Granderson doesn’t need no stinkin’ batting average

Beyond the Boxscore has been handing out weekly awards and last week Curtis Granderson won the Batting Average is For Wussies award on the strength of a 975 OPS despite a meager 250 batting average. That’s been par for the season for Granderson. Curtis is 7th in slugging and tied for 2nd in extra base hits. What’s new is that he’s started to walk. After only 6 walks in April, he’s already at 7 in May.

It’s Opening Day

Good morning and welcome to one of the best days of the year. Opening Day in Detroit is always sweet, but with a banner to hang this will be even better. In the past, ever year we seemed to wonder whether this was the year we’d break the .500 mark. Now we’ll try and see if the Tigers can prove many of the experts right and defend their American League crown and make a return trip to the World Series.

So what is your Opening Day tradition, and will you be able to uphold it this year?

I got permission from my daughter, who’s birthday is today, to still go to the game. If you want to find me, my friends and I meet for breakfast before beginning our day around 9:30 at Casey’s by old Tiger Stadium. We’ll probably leave Casey’s a little earlier than usual to get to our seats in time for the banner raising at 12:30. As for the seats, we’ll be in section 148 row K if you want to stop by and say hi.

This will be a pretty similar script to what we’ve done for the last 10 years.

By the way, if you’re looking for my season preview, it kind of got buried in the avalanche of news on Friday. You can find it here.

Opening Day Seats Hard to Find

It’s no surprise that Opening Day is a hot ticket this year – it is every year. Still, there are usually tickets available one way or another. Last year in the postseason there were hundreds of tickets available for each game at StubHub. As I check this at 8pm, there are only 56 tickets available on StubHub (the cheapest is a standing room only for $145). The story is pretty much the same at ebay where there’s not even a full page of listings.

Now I know that it’s only 16 hours from the first pitch, but with StubHub’s onsite pickup, and the mechanisms for season ticket holders to email tickets to buyers, this seems to be an astoundingly low number of tickets available.

I guess this is good news, because it is more tickets in the hands of fans instead of ticket brokers. With a miniscule public sale, pretty much every Opening Day ticket was distributed to season ticket holders. But if you aren’t in that group, you’re pretty much out of luck.

I’m sure there will be tickets available on the street tomorrow, but if StubHub and eBay are any indication of inventory, they will be few and far between.

Ticket hiccups, injuries, and more previews

Another link round-up while I watch Lost and work on my Tiger preview…

Ticket snafu

Things are kinda hectic for the Tigers ticket department about now. A problem with the printer has season ticket shipments coming at the last minute. Tickets are just starting to arrive today, but the club expects everybody to have their tickets by Friday. Extended box office hours have been created to help with any problems that crop up.

Now if you’re not a season ticket holder, you probably had to get your opening day tickets from a broker. It could be tricky to get those tickets in time for Monday.

Injuries

Indians starter CC Sabathia took a line drive off his forearm today. X-rays came back negative so if he misses time it probably won’t be for very long. But in what looks to be a tight AL Central, all absences of frontline players could be significant.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are dealing with an injury of their own. Vance Wilson had an MRI on his elbow.

Tiger news round-up

I’ll be a day late on announcing the DVD Giveaway winners. I promise it will be announced tomorrow night. In the meantime, some stuff worth reading:

PECOTA and the Central

The straight run of Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA projections for the AL Central put the Tigers in 3rd place with 85 wins. Nate Silver makes some tweaks and post-adjustment he’s looking at the Tigers winning 88 games. With his other adjustments that puts them in a tie for 2nd place, one game out. So essentially it’s a 3 team toss-up in Silver’s eyes. Kind of hard to argue with that, unless you’re a White Sox fan who doesn’t like the 77 win projection.

Power ranking season

Fox Sports latest power rankings place the Tigers 6th, down two spots from last week. Meanwhile the Twins surged up 3 spots. Not sure why. But half of the top 6 teams are from the AL Central.

ESPN the Magazine picks Tigers

I don’t think it’s on newstands yet, and you need to be an Insider I think to flip through, but they’re picking the Tigers to win the AL Central.

New displays coming to Comerica Park

You know those fancy, colorful, shiny displays that you see on the facing of the upper bowl of many newer arenas? Comerica Park is getting those. They are also replacing the out of town scoreboard in right-center with an LED display. Similar ones I’ve seen in Pittsburgh and Cleveland seem to display a ton of information, so I think it could be a good thing. It will also make for dynamic ad space so hopefully it will be additional revenue for the club to sink into a Carlos Guillen extension.

I’m not sure I’ll like the strip on the upper bowl though. I’m trying to visualize it, and I think it might take a little away from the retro look of the park.

The Freep also had a story and video looking at stadium preparation for the Opener.

Four Tops get anthem duty

The Four Tops have been tapped to sing the National Anthem for the Opener. No announcement yet on first pitch, but I’d imagine it will be Kwame and Granholm. Gates will open at 10:30am with a ceremony (not the ring ceremony which is on April 4th). Me, I’m hoping for a fly-over.

Things are looking good weather-wise calling for 54 and sunny.

Now if only those tickets would arrive.

DVD give away reminder

Just a quick reminder that your entries for the World Series memories portion of the Tigers World Series DVD giveaway need to be in by noon on Saturday.

As for the Final Cut portion, it sounds like we may have our winner announced on Monday. Jim Leyland anticipates whittling the roster down to 25 by Monday. There are still 39 players in camp. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, if all 14 cuts come on the same day that essentially means everybody who entered the contest is correct and it just turns into a random drawing. But them are the rules.

Tigers DVD Giveaway

detroit-tigers-ae-dvd.jpg

On Friday I wrote about a new DVD featuring the Tigers World Championship teams from 1945, 1968, and 1984. The folks from A & E have provided me with 3 copies that I in turn get to give to you. To do this I’m running 2 contests. You are eligible to enter both contests, so you have a couple chances to win.

1. Final cut

I will be giving away one DVD to the reader who guesses who the Tigers last cut of spring training will be. Just pick one Tiger and if he is the last to leave the big team, you could win. Now a couple notes:

  • If there are multiple people who correctly select the last cut, the winner will be determined via a random drawing
  • If there are multiple players cut on the same day, which represent the final cuts, each player will be considered a correct player. If this results in multiple correct entries, again we’ll go the drawing route
  • Being placed on the disabled list does not constitute being cut.

Use the Contact Form to submit your best guess. Because there is a time implication on this one, all entries must be received by noon ET on Tuesday March 20th. One entry per person please. The winner will be announced when the roster is trimmed to 25.

2. Tiger Memories

In this contest I will select 2 winners. This one will require a little more effort and I want you to write about your memories from a Tigers World Series victory. Pick one of the World Series’ featured in the DVD (45/68/84) and tell me about your experience. What I want to know are things like me how old you were, where you were, what you were doing at the time and why it was special to you.

The judging of this will be completely subjective and done primarily by me (but I reserve the right to consult some other judges). I’ll be looking for stories that are interesting, touching, well written, etc.

All entries should be less than 300 words. Again, use the contact form to submit your entry. Entries for contest 2 need to be submitted by noon ET on Saturday March 24th. I do plan on posting the winners, so you expect that your entry could end up here. The winners will be announced on March 27th.

Please enter a valid email address on the form, otherwise I won’t be able to contact you if you win.

Now if you just want to go ahead and buy one, you can find them at A & E’s online store. If you order before March 28th you will receive a bonus DVD – Modern Marvels Baseball Parks.

Blog Grandy Blog

I’m really enjoying Curtis Granderson’s new blog.

I particularly enjoyed yesterday’s post where after talking about his NCAA bracket, he wrote about the refinements to his swing:

Even with all the March Madness going on with college hoops we are still working very hard on the field, and I’m still trying to iron out my new swing and approach this spring training. Basically what I’m trying to do is make my swing as simple as possible and eliminate as much wasted movement as possible. Since college I’ve always been different than most hitters in terms of my stance, but it worked for me. Over time I started running into problems when timing issues and consistency from day to day. So working with Lloyd McClendon (new hitting coach), we’ve tried to simplify my swing and make it as normal to a major league swing as possible. The idea behind it is that on good or bad days, if I can keep it simple, it’s easier to correct mistakes. It will hopefully also help my approach with two strikes and hopefully make it easier to not only put the ball in play, but hit the ball hard with two strikes.

And really, it’s worth clicking through to the post to see the picture alone.

I didn’t know at first if he was the one actually updating it (not that he isn’t capabable, just that it takes time doing this blogging thing), but after the last few posts it definitely seems to be his voice. With a little more downtime this spring, he’s been updating every few days with rather lengthy posts. The fact that the updates coincide with days he doesn’t travel to away games lends even more credence to the fact that it is his voice.

Other Stuff

  • If you haven’t seen it mentioned on the other Tigers blogs, Ian of Sweaty Men Endeavors, is the new chief blogger at the Tigers SB Nation site Bless You Boys. Ian is awesomely funny and writes the best news aggregation posts in the business. Stop by and say hi at his new gig.
  • Good luck if you entered into the drawing for Opening Day tickets. You’re one of 158,000 who will be hoping to snag one of the thousand or so tickets (including SRO) being made available. The Tigers season ticket sales are up to 18,300 full season equivalents – from 9500 last year – and they’ve sold out of the 27 game packages. You’ll hear by Friday if you won. Tickets are still available for the second game of the year on April 4th when the ring ceremony will take place. That might not be a bad consolation prize. But if you really want to get to Opening Day, tickets are up to $157.50 on StubHub.

Tigers paid attendance tops 1.5 million

The Tigers released some updated ticketing numbers today. As of the start of business today, the Tigers have sold 17,830 full season equivalent season tickets. That’s up from 9500 last year. Plus, in the first weekend of individual game sales they sold 86,606 tickets. That pushes the paid attendance to 1,530,836. As a point of reference that surpasses the 1.37 million they drew in all of 2003 and the 1.50 million they drew in 2002.

Winning does wonders.
