Game 2017.119: Tigers at Rangers

McCann and Mikie continued their hot streaks, and Upton was Upton, but nobody else did much of anything.

Supposedly the Tigers and Astros are still discussing a Verlander trade.

And SS Isaac Paredes is ripping it up for the West Michigan Whitecaps: in 5 games his has hit .400 with 3 HR.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Mikie Mahtook, CF
  3. Justin Upton, LF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  6. Victor Martinez, DH
  7. James Hicks, C
  8. Alex Presley, RF
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Justin Verlander vs AJ Griffin

    1. I’m on Gameday, too, don’t know. Guessing it was one of those wild pitches that wasn’t wild enough. Kinsler could move without risk but not Iglesias, home well covered.

  1. Not much for the Verlander trade idea. Ill-adivised. Doesn’t seem like a very sober idea for either the Astros or Tigers. Send Cabrera to Houston instead, see how they like that.

    1. Yeah. Don’t see how generous the offer could be, anyway.

Dump Verlander and keep Zimmermann? Ugh. Perish the thought.

  2. The FS-1 guys have it right. The only person they should talk to is JV since he can refuse/cancel any offer or agreement the clubs may come to.

    1. That’s a good point. Ask Justin if wants to go to Houston, and if he does, persuade him not to. For all the talk there has been about this for a month or more, not once have I seen even any speculation on what Houston is supposed to be offering. Not even a hint.

  3. Good for Ian Kinsler for speaking his mind, by the way. There’s a guy I want on my team. Fielder for Kinsler. Best trade ever made.

    1. I’ve been watching on TV all season and if things like Foxtracks is to be believed, it MLB that has the problem. The ball/strike calling has been horrible all year. The only consistency has been that it is bad. I think MLB made it worse when they changed the bottom of the strike zone at the beginning of the year.

  4. Casty 2 K’s on balls almost hit the plate. Mike also 1 K same ball in dirt. Texas has retired 8 Tigers in a row. Easy to see why.

  5. If the Tigers do want JV to go.. Tell him to look no further than Houston 4-5-6 hitters vs the Tigers4-5-6. In fact anyone’s 4,5,6 hitters compared to the Tigers….

  6. Five runs on the board or not… that last half-inning was more of what I like about JV. There’s no one else on the staff who finishes like that.

    1. No, it’s too early and they were too far behind, no outs. If he had, it would not have hurt much anyway.

      1. OK. Just checking. You’re making Victor very nervous. He’s afraid to get on base late in games now.

  7. I don’t like to complain, but having to spend two outs for those two runs kind of bums me out.

    1. That’s because Texas played normal infield depth with 2nd and 3rd and no outs. They happily gave up 2 outs for 2 runs with a 4 run lead in the 7th. May show more confidence in their pen than we have in ours.

  8. Hey! How did Alex Avila manage to climb two spots up the Faces of WAR? How does that work? He’s not even here any more.

  9. If Detroit gets out of this without giving up a run, this makes the 2017 bullpen highlight reel.

    1. Great. Stumpf looks like a good pitcher. Seems like a good pitcher. Results? Nah. Not yet, anyway. He hasn’t done a damn thing. Don’t recall a single crucial act of run prevention. Not one.

  10. I love it, stole home but there was balk called. Free run, Walk, sb, error, balk. NOW THAT’S BASEBALL! Hope Kevin enjoyed it.

    1. Looked pretty bad on Gameday, too. He should rest his back. Bring up Ficociello or Navarro. I don’t notice whether he’s in or out the lineup any more.

    2. It’s sad watching a great hitter like Miggy look like me on most of his at bats… But Brad doesn’t have the balls to shut him down and the teams going no where…..

  11. Hey Stumpy.. With a runner on third how about peeking at him… Instead of who knows where…plus it wasn’t a balk but Odor beat it easily anyway.

  12. I’d say that Saupold is on a brisk walk down the Mujica-Rondon Trail, but I think Toledo is running out of pitchers.

      1. If a player is unable to round the bases after hitting a home run, is it within the rules to put a pinch runner in? Maybe you could just have Victor stop at second base and then have Romine complete the trip. Just for fun. I wonder if it’s allowed.

  13. I’ll give him credit for not striking out a lot, but does anyone on the team swing at more outside the strike zone than Iglesias, and is it even close?

  14. I’ve already called 73-89, but there are predictions you want to be wrong about. Regrettably, I think another tipping point was reached tonight. Finishing .500 is out of reach. 28-15 is just NFW.

    1. Jud, so you don’t think the boys will put on an season ending win streak to saves Brad’s job?

  15. I think they go 15-28 because they play mostly AL Central teams and Cleveland Minnesota KC are all in the hunt and won’t be able to lay down.. The Tigers are their Cannon fodder!

  16. Aducci went 4-5….at Mudhensville last night…Hill (CF) has a big game at WM too… As a first rounder I believe…he hasn’t had much excitement as a prospect….Candyman had a good night too.. 3 run HR and a double..

    1. Probably doesn’t matter what Aducci does anywhere. Brad kept playing Lettuce (who I happen to like)in RF in spite of Aducci’s better numbers. I think Coleman has started an investigation into this.
