Game 2017.111: Tigers at Pirates

There isn’t much good to say about last night’s game, other than to point out the job done by the Sunday Scrubs: Hicks, Romine and Machado combined for a 7-for-12 bottom of the order barrage.

Jose Iglesias is on the bereavement list (always hate hearing that). That means that Jeimer Candelario gets the call, the guy we got from Chicago in the Wilson-Avila trade. We don’t get to see him right away, since Jim Leyland forgot to tell Brad Ausmus about the rule where you have to start a guy on the day you bring him up. There will be pinch-hitting opportunities though, with this National League park business.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Andrew Romine, RF
  3. Justin Upton, LF
  4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  5. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  6. Mikie Mahtook, CF
  7. James McCann, C
  8. Dixon Machado, SS
  9. Jordan Zimmermann, P

Pitching:  Jordan Zimmermann vs Trevor Williams

Jordan Zimmermann is in the lineup twice, once as a pitcher and once as a hitter. I hope Brad catches that before the game; I’m not sure if that is legal.

  1. This would be a nail-biter if watching paint dry made me bite my nails.

Just kidding. A close game is interesting. I guess.

    1. A close game *was* interesting. Seems like Zimmermann was running out of gas, but hey, who you gonna call? Ah well.

  2. What make this dull is our 1 hit. Another decent outing by Zimm, no support.

  3. Nice to see Zimmerman settling in to some good
outings… No chance though of him shutting anybody
down totally which would not have mattered tonight…
Only young ave. pitchers can throw a one hitter vs.
    us… Sad offensive effort tonight…Streaks over…
but it seems like the starting pitching, albeit Sanchey
in his last batting practice exhibition.. The defense
as been way above ave. lately…So they are not embarrassing
    themselves…Where was Adduci tonight ….Come on Asmie…

  4. Inspiring effort by the Pussycat O… This is exactly how you get 10 games under.. Win 4 and lose a lot after that…

  5. Looking around the AL Central at records when scoring 3 runs in a game:

    KCR 8-11
    CLE 5-7
    MIN 4-11
    CHW 4-14
    DET 0-12

I don’t know if this means anything in particular. Definitely a cherry-picked stat. But it sure jibes with how the season feels. Three runs doesn’t give you a great chance… but zero chance???

Maybe we shouldn’t be so hard on them for managing one hit and no runs. Generally speaking, and not just for the Tigers, if you’re not going to score 4, you may as well score none. Funny but (slightly exaggerated) true.
