Game 2017:45: Tigers at Astros

That was actually one of Zimmermann’s better outings last night, but the Tigers had to contend with antics in the field and flailing at the plate. Justin Upton had a particularly rough night. He has been getting a steady diet of off-speed pitches low and away, and can’t seem to either hit them or refrain from swinging at them.

Brad Ausmus isn’t worried: “You ask people around baseball if the Detroit Tigers are going to hit. It will be a unanimous yes. We are going to hit.” Well alrighty then.

Today’s  Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Alex Avila, C
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Justin Upton, LF
  6. Mikie Mahtook, CF
  7. Andrew Romine, 3B
  8. Tyler Collins, RF
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Daniel Norris vs Charlie Morton

Van Man better be sharp, the way the Tigers have been hitting in Houston.

Nick gets a day off after clowning it up at 3rd last night.

  1. Coleman: I noticed it’s a 10 man lineup. The way we’ve been hitting it will just add to the Houston’s strikeout total. 2 right fielders are listed. Also not bad idea based on yesterday’s fun in the field.

Happy to see lettuce at 3rd, not so much for his glove but to give Casty a break from the plate. He and J-Up have really looked awful.

    1. Maybe the Astros won’t notice?

I fixed it, thanks. I guess I just couldn’t accept this anemic group sans JD.

  2. JUp has that deer in headlights look he had for 4 months last year. Plus he needs a car to come and drive him back to the dugout. His walk back there takes 2-3 minutes after his usual K as he stares into space…

  3. Collins has played in 19 games in May. He has gotten hits in one of them… But he plays everyday!!!

  4. It’s getting closer to Finger’s time to break out, closer to 0 for 30.

  5. Its one thing when you are not hitting the ball. But Iggy, Collins, Upton’s swings are embarrassing to anyone who has ever played the game.

    1. As I said, it was good to sit Casty because of his bat, J-Up should join him for the 2 days also. I’d send Fingers to Toledo for a Mudhen.

      1. JUp now takes EVERY first strike. So pitchers throw a fastball (upton being a dead fastball hitter) right down the middle. Happened 3 times today. Been happening every at bat for several games.

  6. This one of Van-Man’s best start this year. Good effort, unearned run hurts.

  7. Greene has been close to perfect lately. Would not be surprised if he gets the extra start in Chicago.

    1. I don’t think they’d do that, Tony. I think Greene’s starting days are behind him. And fortunately he has cut in the bullpen line this season and become Mr. Go-To Setup Man.

      1. I will be surprised if it isn’t Chad Bell. If it isn’t, it’s probably Buck Farmer called up for a day.

        1. Would imagine that a RH pitcher might be better vs. ChiTown…

      2. Loon: Of course you make sense, it would be foolish to disrupt the pen now that it has stabilized. It will probably be Farmer but we’ve seen him before. Might be nice to let Chad Bell try a start as Coleman said.

  8. I know I mentioned this several times, but how about Shane Greene!!!.. Beyond Solid!

  9. I actually watched Collins double and an Iggy dinger….. I am heading to the store for lotto tickets!!!!!!

    1. +2 for Jud… remind me to tell you all the best lottery prank story ever…

  10. I had tix last night to both the DET-HOU game and U2 @ NRG stadium – turned into a win-win evening…really enjoyed the concert and DET won
