Game 2017.53: Tigers at Royals

Miguel Cabrera definitely appears at the top of the Faces of LOB page. He has left 53 on base, which is very un-Miggy like. Surprisingly though, he doesn’t even lead the Tigers. Your 2017 Detroit Tigers LOB Leader: Nick Castellanos with 70, which puts him in the top 25 in MLB. And then there is his glove.

(The Mets are a step above when it comes to LOB though: They have Jay Bruce with 73 and Curtis Granderson with 73 and Neil Walker with 62).

If we go to Faces of WAR, our backup catcher, who has hit a vicious slump (or has regressed to his proper place) is still 4th best on the team. Three of the top 10 most valuable players on the team are relief pitchers. Oh, and a minor league guy who played in Korea last year and has been on the DL for weeks is still in the top 10. This is not good.

But we do have a few guys with great baseball cards, so there is that.

Today’s Dry, Cracking Leather Lineup:

  1. Andrew Romines, 2B
  2. Alex Avila, C
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. JD Martinez, RF
  6. Justin Upton, LF
  7. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  8. Alex Presley, CF
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Matthew Boyd vs Ian Kennedy

We have the Lettuce and Parsley combo tonight, but the Royals have a guy named Cheslor Cuthbert, which gives them a decided name advantage.

  1. Using last years stats, I did some number crunching. Just simple stuff.

For Miggy to equal last years .316 BA he only needs to bat around .333.

For Castv to get back to last years .285, Casty only needs to hit .355.

    Good Luck!

    1. Simple can be telling, good stuff. That and Coleman’s LOB revelation shows how far Nicholas has fallen and what a big hole one-third of a season can be to climb out of.

  2. They say Casty comes early every day to work on his defense.. Just like his hitting his defense is getting worse. His range has always been a problem and it seems he has cement feet now.. He can’t go two steps in either direction.. Today he give up a double on a ball that almost hits him. His arm has always been erratic, but the problem is it isnt getting better. .he is back to hacking at everything low and away again…… I don’t get it.. Who peaks at 26???

  4. I have actually enjoyed Gibby today. He did a lot of manager dialog which was very good. He managed both Kennedy and JUp..

  5. Wilson clown show of not covering home on the wild pitch may come back to haunt the Tigs… Brad says were gonna work on that at spring training!

  6. Nice to win a series, AWillie had the tough part of the lineup. He bent but didn’t break. We avoid last place.

  7. In the race for last place this series.. The Tigers fail miserably winning 2 out of 3…shows you how bad the Royals are…..but good series, Right!

Loon I am still in the fold them group…. Upton’s gone no matter what.. Miggys falling fast… Casty.. Just wow!… Can’t afford JD…. Zimm waste of money… I guess I see more problems than solutions…. If they finish 81-81 Brad will be back.. Tigers will whine about all the injuries, like no one else goes thru this. Brad whines about the schedule, like no one else goes thru this…..
….I just don’t see it happening with this group of players…owners are basically stupid and they will take a lot of the Tiger problems for their teams…

  8. The Tigers were 25-28 at this point in 2016, too. I’d forgotten. See box score of 2016 Game 53 for some fun. Must have made us mad. Many games do.

  9. Oh yes, the fearful trip is done. Now we can go home and-and-and what? Our home record going in is an impressive 12-10. The last game of June is the beginning of a 3 game set against the Indians. Did you notice we have a 10 game road trip just before that? 4 at Seattle, 3 at the Padres, and 3 games possibly for last place again with the Royals. It’s the schedule makers fault!

By the start of the Indians series, the ball club may be totally changed. We all have to wait to see what happens. The only sure thing is that no matter what trades happen or don’t happen, no matter if we sell or buy, Brad and his management team will be there to lead them for the rest of the year.
