Game 2017.46: Tigers at Astros

Encouraging game last night, as Norris pitched well (he really deserved a W for that one, although it went to Greene, who pitched very well).

Tonight the Tigers have a chance to save the split, which, on the road against the best team in the league, is like a win. If they don’t, it is probably because I didn’t post the lucky 10-man lineup.

Buck Farmer just called up and announced as the starter for Game 1 in Chicago tomorrow.

Today’s  Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Tyler Collins, CF
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. JD Martinez, RF
  6. Justin Upton, LF
  7. James McCann, C
  8. Dixon Machado, 3B
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Justin Verlander vs Mike Fiers

Nick gets another day off, and Dixon takes a turn at third. No Alex today, but then he did get whacked on the back of the glove hand last night.

  1. Iggy looks a lot better at the plate. If McCann can’t play tomorrow, I vote for Hicks as his replacement.

  2. Hat trick for JV, right out of the Sanchez school of pitching. He was doing well and all of a sudden Bam! Rod suggested it was because of the catcher change, give me a break!

  3. Fingers continues to amaze me. How do you get doubled up on 2nd on the liner to 1st? HIA.

  4. Little league stuff…beating yourself is always
the worst… Our base running is generally lousy.
Miggy should have been thrown out earlier on his
double… Bad time for JV to spit the bit…

    1. And I think Gene Lamont must have been filling is as 3rd base coach when they sent Miggy home as a dead duck.

  5. Fingers doesn’t do it again. I’m sorry, I’ll take Jones batting at .195 any day.

  6. How dumb do you have to be to
    1. Bat Collins second
    2. Let him bat with the game on the line.
    3. Count on him to at least hit a fly ball.

    1. +3 I like Jones in spite of how he hits because he can catch balls Fingers can only chase, he runs fast and can bunt. In time he will either hit .260 or be gone. But, while in the field he will not hurt us.

  7. Entertaining loss but many disappointments:
JV Not good and I am concerned.
Fingers at bat, in the field and base running.
    JWillie giving up HR.
    Good parts:
    J-Up had a big night.
Iggy 2 good games at the plate.

I would have hit Casty for lettuce in the 9th to see if he could run into one.

  8. That game ended in the top of the 8th…. Runner on 2nd, no outs… Runners on 1st and 3rd one out… You have your 1-4 batters up and you BARELY get one run…. 13 hits 5 walks and you can’t score 7 runs…

    1. Agree, Jud we are looking forward to a long season. JD should be gone in July and we can look forward to Fingers being his replacement. At least Brad will be around all year (and probably next year) to maintain our stability.

  9. I would like to see how many times this year Victor and Miggy have come thru in the 8th and 9th innings. I bet its not many if any!!!

    1. Victor is OK, but Miggy becomes Tyler Collins late in close games. Alex Avila is the only Tiger who does well late and close. Upton, Kinsler, and Iglesias are a combined 3 for 44 with 2 RBI.

Detroit is last in the AL in Late/Close hitting to an embarrassing degree:

      167 PA, 2 HR, 11 RBI
      .189/.290/.291>>>.580 OPS

No other team is even close to this bad.

  10. Boyd is in need of a good outing badly…
    11 runs …..20 hits …over his last 7 innings…
Fulmer is our only starter with decent numbers..
Preparing for frustration… during the whole season…
Good have some good periods but also some very ugly
    stretches…Don’t do enough things well…
