Game 2017.35: Tigers at Angels

J.D. Martinez returned, and squibbed a single. Jose Iglesias made a great play at short. A bunch of other things also happened, none of which were worth staying awake for. Zimmermann wasn’t horrible, but he certainly was not good. The Tigers were probably looking for more than “not horrible” when they gave him that contract.

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  2. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Justin Upton, LF
  6. JD Martinez RF
  7. Tyler Collins, CF
  8. James McCann, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Pitching: Daniel Norris vs Ricky Nolasco

  1. We’re under the overhang.. RF line just behind first base.. The sun here is brutal usually til about 7 so the boys did good.. No sun where we are

  2. Wow.. A 2 spot.. JD dinger still going up when it went out!!
Tigers answer with an LA play by Dr Strangeglove.. Had time didn’t set his feet.. Absolutely an error called a hit!

  3. Norris good early.. Lots of change of speed so far ..

Side note never realized Trout is taller than Miggy.. From the belt down they are exactly the same build..

  4. Maybe 25,000 here.. Usually for Tigers a lot more.. Our 14th Tiger game.
Fewer Tiger fans than usual also… Tiger fans are 2-11 like us, smarter than us don’t come anymore!!

  5. I noticed Casty is not going with the pink bat tonight. I remember last year at Comerica he gave it to a fan he was so frustrated. Maybe he’ll ask for the pink bat if he continues to go o-fer tonight.

  6. They are teasing me… 2-0 after 3

Miggy up.. 74..76..81..74 fly ball.. Miggy said something to Nolasco.. Maybe about being a “real man” as he was jogging back to the dugout…..

  7. Fingers swings at any ball out of the strike zone after Nolasco walked 2 this inning.

  8. Rod will say Iggy doesn’t strike out very much…. Why ….cause he leaves the strike zone constantly throwing his bat at strike 3…. And hitting weak outs..

    1. What I don’t get s why he doesn’t attempt bunting for a base hit occasionally.

  9. Fingers breaks on the soft liner 3 seconds later than he should have… It falls in

  10. A ball Collins should have caught.. A ball Iggy could have caught.. A pitch that doesn’t hit Trout…… The Tigers in LA……

  11. He only threw one bad pitch in that inning.. 2 if you count the ball that didn’t hit Trout.. (did they show you a bunch of replays Tony.. Looked like it went under his arm.. Brads napping so he didn’t challenge!

  12. The worst part today is a horse crap pitcher like Nolasco shutting the Pussycats down..

  13. Norris nice job today.. Bright future!….
Greene as hot as anybody get us out if this mess!!

  14. Greene…. Again.. I keep saying this he has filthy stuff and will benefit from the KRod mess….

    1. Greene has been good this year. Iggy same kind of at bat. Norris had a good start but he needs to work on going a little deeper in games.

  15. Iggy you constantly do this.. Hey Brad anyone watching… About his 15th out in arrow.. Out of the zone!

  16. Tigers in LA… Greene went 95.95.95.96 out of the park on a pitch down the middle.. Hey Greene you ain’t THAT good!

  17. thanks for the ‘on-the-scene’ updates Jud… this game is now bullpen vs bullpen… don’t like that matchup

  18. Heart of the order coming up.. This will take a lot of effort on MIggys part to have a good LA at bat…

  19. Still a good job by Greene, giving a HR to Trout and he faced the meat of their order. What we need is for some of our .200 BA super stars to measure up.

  20. My boys tell me Miggy is 2-20 in games we have attended.. 0-4 tonight.. O for something yesterday…

  21. This actually won’t be so bad because I already expect the usual outcome. Seldom have the games even gotten this far and still are a game!

    1. Looking at who’s hot and who’s not in our lineup you would think Brad would shuffle the deck a little bit to see if we can get more production.

  22. MIggys 3/19 on the road trip 1 Rbi… Not counting tomorrow’s 0/4..he does this every year. He should just stay in Detroit.

  23. Collins and Iggy will bat in the 9th.. If they bat it will be further proof, as if we need any, that Brad can’t manage a team….

    1. Jud: I know you and the boys enjoyed this one. JWillie did the job. Better yet, with JV going tomorrow, when is the last time we had a legitimate shot at winning a series in LA. Take the boys and celebrate!

  24. That is how a closer should look…
The sad thing was evaluating that
Frankie still had the “stuff” to
continue to be a closer in 17′.
Got a lot of ground to make up
    4 blown saves…
The last three innings look to be
shaping up in the BP but not much
    depth out there…
Justin Wilson …Thanks for the clean
    9th…and 3 k’s to boot…
Looked like a playoff team last night.
Zimmerman really has me nervous…the two
lefty rooks will have to hold up for us.
    Verlander and Fulmer …..very nice…

  25. Jud, it looks like there are a ton of Tiger
fans out there…Hopefully J.V. will put on
    a show today… Enjoy !!!

  26. J.D. Martinez plays two games and is on the Tigers WAR leaderboard. Missing from that leaderboard: Cabrera, Verlander, V-Mart, Zimmermann, Rodriguez. Aka $98 MM. *JaCoby Jones* is on that leaderboard. Imagine what might happen if the heavyweights finally come around. 60 more games to prove they can do better than one step forward, one step back.

      1. Yeah, crazy. But it’s no lie. I think I’ve run out of patience with Tyler Collins. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jim Adduci stick around as part of the amazing story in 2017, the one where the Tigers go from floundering around .500 to dominating MLB. Then again, there’s Mikie Mahtook. Still on the team, right? Why? He can go and Collins can stay. At least Collins gets hot once in a while.

    1. good points, but unfortunately when ‘the heavyweight finally come around’, regression typically catches up w/the younger overachievers….

      1. Yeah, Stormin’, except that there are no younger overachievers at present. 🙂 Fulmer is just plain good. I don’t think he’s overachieving.

Aside from Alex Avila, regression to the mean would bode very well for Detroit. Most of the team is underachieving. McCann, Cabrera, Kinsler, Iglesias, Castellanos, V-Mart, Mahtook, Collins, Verlander, Zimmermann, Rodriguez, and Sanchez.

        1. agree on all points!

if there was ever dept where DET could use a boat-load of overachieving, its their bullpen

          1. The reviews on Justin Wilson and Shane Greene seem to indicate they are for real. That’s encouraging. Seems like the bullpen has been on a bit of a quiet roll for a while. The overall numbers for the season probably don’t look very good, but in terms of real damage, wow, those 4 blown saves by F-Rod loom large. Take 3 away and the Tigers are 21-14 and “looking good.” 18-17 and it’s “ah, they suck.”

  27. JV and the necessary walks…frustrating – after getting two quick K outs, he walked the 7th and 8th hitters, batting .187 & .143 respectively…adding to that pitch count
