Game 2016.32: Tigers at Nationals

Last night the Tigers hit a new season Lowe, as they ran their losing streak up to 7.

The game was an interesting game despite the ending, with a decent start by Anibal Sanchez, the reappearance of JD Martinez, some umpire-baiting, and some conversation-provoking managerial decisions. For what it’s worth, Brad says that he did anticipate that Washington would intentionally walk Martinez. But his thinking was “hey, more RBIs for Saltalamacchia if he runs into one” (that’s a paraphrase). He didn’t, and Brad regrets getting greedy.

There is a lot of talk about Brad Ausmus being on the hot seat, but with May’s unseasonably cold weather, that sounds more comfortable than what is warranted. Maybe instead they should slide a couple of those ice packs into his seat cushion.

Bryce Harper is probably looking at a suspension for coming onto the field after being ejected. Not to mention that he gave a verbal Collinsing to the umpire while he was out there. Dusty Baker says he might have to spank him (yes, he did).

Today’s Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. JD Martinez, LF
  3. V Martinez, 1B
  4. Castellanos, 3B
  5. Upton, LF
  6. McCann, C
  7. Gose, CF
  8. Romine, SS
  9. Fulmer, P

Tonight was probably going to be Cabrera’s night out of the lineup anyway—Castellanos, Cabrera, and Martinez were going to each play 2 games of the series. He says his knee is OK. Iglesias is in a 1-for-19 slump, the worst of his career, so lettuce hope Romine can do better.

    1. Castellanos HR is the first off Ross this year… on a slider, which hitters were 3 for 38 coming into tonight.

Castellanos has been impressive at the plate this year…hope its contagious

  1. Fulmer has responded well after his 2nd inning hiccup.

  2. The replay gods smile on the Tigers. So much for Ross being a stronger pitcher the third time around. V-Mart is awesome at the plate tonight.

  3. never a doubt…right?

    A W is a W.

KC’s bullpen had a meltdown tonight, Soria got tagged for 2 runs and Herrera for 3..and they lost to NYY again – despite 3 HR’s by L. Cain!

    1. Well. pretty or not it is his 8th save. Soria is pitching like he is still a Tiger.

  4. Hilarious write-up, Coleman. I see what you did there.

Friends – Jim Price commented the other day about how weak he thought Cabrera looked at the plate this year. I’m taking a look into it and plan to write about it when it’s my turn on Thurs. Finding some interesting stuff.

    1. Well if you consider that until tonight Salty was our top home run hitter, it does make you wonder. Looking forward to your observations.

  5. CWS bullpen also had a meltdown last night giving up 1 R in the 7th and 7 runs in the 8th – and TEX pulled off another come from behind win 13-11. TEX appears to be for real – they had 17 hits last night, and Prince Fielder had none of them – he went 0-3 and is down to .188… a lot of time for him to turn it around, but i’m so glad we moved that contract…and got Kinsler in return.

RE: Gose’s contested slide into 2nd base, the call shoulda/coulda went the other way – and cost DET a run… had the review called Romine out (@ 1st) because of Gose’s slide that would have been 100% on Gose for two reasons: 1) it was not a hard hit ball and Romine would have beat the relay anyway, and 2) Gose should know the ‘new rule’ and SHOULD HAVE done essentially the same slide and still touched 2nd base.

The lack of awareness by Gose could have easily cost DET a couple runs and the game – and little things like that are part of the reason DET has losing record this year…

    1. Totally agree. When it was appealed I thought he would be called out. Gose has shown lack of concentration before, lack of hustle, etc. The unforgivable part is that there doesn’t seem to be anyone on staff to make him responsible.

    1. I really wish they would bring up another outfielder, a kid if Maybin isn’t ready. We are only carrying 3 outfielders which means there is no real alternative for Gose who continues to disappoint.

    2. I really wish they would bring up another outfielder, a kid if Maybin isn’t ready. We are only carrying 3 outfielders which means there is no real alternative for Gose who continues to disappoint. Norris does not appear to be ready yet. We really should NOT be carrying 13 (I believe) pitchers.

      1. Ask and you shall receive as the Tigers have called up Daniel Norris for bullpen duty.

  7. Cabrera at 3B, Castellanos on the bench
    1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
    2. J.D. Martinez, RF
    3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
    4. Victor Martinez, 1B
    5. Justin Upton, LF
    6. James McCann, C
    7. Anthony Gose, CF
    8. Jose Iglesias, SS
    9. Jordan Zimmermann, P
