Game 2014.128: Tigers at Twins

Well, we got to see most of the Mud Hen pitching staff that first game, so that saves a drive to Toledo. Lobstein wasn’t bad, really: 3 runs over 5 2/3 innings. Not that it mattered by that point.

Tonight, Justin Verlander returns after missing a start with a not-damaged shoulder. It will be interesting to see if they’ve got him on a short pitch count. On the one hand, that would make sense after missing a start with a sore shoulder; on the other hand, you have the bullpen.

Tonight’s Saving-Romine-For-The-Bullpen Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Hunter, RF
  3. Cabrera, DH
  4. V Martinez, 1B
  5. J Martinez, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. Holaday, C
  8. Suarez, SS
  9. Davis, CF

  1. Even if JV pitches the greatest game in MLB history. Even if JV throws a perfect game of only 81 pitches without throwing a ball. If he strikes out all 27 Twins…………….so what!!!!!!!

    1. it’s a place to start. Things look bleak for sure given what has occurred over the last 24 hours (and last 6 weeks) but there is still a month to go. The Royals will cool off.

  2. A 13 pitch first inning is a start, but I will hold my comments until we get thru the 2nd inning.

  3. Why is it that all these teams being up their scrub pitchers with 0 or 1 win and the completely shut the Sluggos down…..the Tigers bring up their scrub pitchers and they give up 5-10-15 or 20

  4. Let’s see if JV can hold them to a field goal here. Got to stop giving up touchdowns!

    1. Yeah, what were those post-game comments about Verlander about one month ago….velocity was up and my arm felt good, gonna be a good next game start…zzzzz

  5. Did y’all here the fan Verlander comment on the radio? Jim called him a leather tongue. Made my day/night.

  6. In the past month Cabrerra faces minor league pitchers almost every night….no doubles… no home runs…hitting a whopping .308 …nice gig for $22+ mil……..big deal!

  7. It looked to me like JV had quite the look for Brad the Boy Blunder when he walked off the mound. Or is it just me?

  8. 3 hits for Torii hitting 2nd, 3 hits for Victor hitting 4th, but there is a black hole in the 3 spot.

  9. Gardenhire left his rookie in an inning too long. Ausmus pulled Verlander at just the right time. Smarty +1 (it’s about time).

    1. I’ll agree that smarty gets one back for the move re JV tonight but I think his tally is still close to the negative.

      1. He got an F-word for his trouble, but Santana had been killing Verlander, and his pitch count was high, and his curve wasn’t curving. It was the right move.

  10. OK, Smarty, send Joba back out for the 9th and I’ll give you a +5. Yeah, I know there’s no chance, but a guy can dream.

  11. all kidding and AAA pitchers aside, I never imagined winning “a game” against the Twinkies would be such a tall order

    1. I’m satisfied with it. A game that looked like another going down the tubes got turned around by some good plays, good calls, big hits, and good (enough) bullpen. Feels great, in fact, after the humiliation and then the annihilation of the past three.

    1. Second place in the AL Central, maybe? 6th in the AL? 10th in MLB? Those are my guesses.
