Game 2014.127: Tigers at Twins

Well, that may have been the low point of the season.

Today, we get to see what the Tigers are made of. We may not want to know the answer to that one, but it will come regardless.

The Tigers play two today, sending young Buck Farmer out for the opener to try to slow down Adrian Peterson and the Twins.

Detroit returns Robby “Don’t Look At How Fister Did Last Night” Ray and Ian “What He Said” Krol to Toledo, and bring up Buck Farmer (under double-header rules), Patrick McCoy, and Kyle “Might As Well Try Me” Lobstein.

Oh, and tip of the cap to Drew Smyly, with a 2-hit complete game shutout of the Blue Jays.

Today’s One-Of-Them-May-Pitch Lineup:

  1. Kinsler, 2B
  2. Carrera, CF
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. JD Martinez, LF
  6. Castellanos, 3B
  7. Kelly, RF
  8. Avila, C
  9. Romine, SS

  1. Doesn’t it violate one of the unwritten rules of baseball for Minnesota to keep scoring touchdowns?

  2. Buck is playing with Confederate money. I hope we don’t have to see Farmer or Ray again this season.

How about that Tigers minor league talent? I think they spent the last of their “fooled you” chips with Thompson and Knebel, although I suppose Soria could end up being another “fooled us.”

The silver lining to getting hosed in the Fister deal is that it wound up with the Tigers getting David Price. That’s one way of looking at it, anyway. Overlooking the eventual embarrassment of Lombardozzi for Gonzalez leading to Romine.

Not the best of times for former genius DD.

  3. Horror? What horror? This is progress. Today they gave up less than half the number of runs they gave up last night. The glass half full but it’s a small glass.

  4. Maybe the Tigers should be interested in Bartolo Colon, just placed on revocable waivers by the Mets.

  5. Unless the Tigers play .700 baseball the rest of the way, they’re not going to win 90 games, and they’re not going to make the playoffs. Even if by some fluke they happen to make it, they won’t know what to do when they get there.

We know the talent is there based on how they played the first 40 games, but they’ve been a .500 since June 1st. Dombrowski is partially to blame for trading away Fister for nothing and not putting together a decent bullpen, but the problems go much farther than that. Ausmus has mismanaged too many games, and he and his coaching staff haven’t been able to get the most out of their players. This isn’t the fresh, sabr-oriented staff I was hoping for.

I never thought I’d say I missed Leyland, but it’s hard to imagine him seeing this clown show in June and July and not somehow nipping it in the bud before it snowballed. Ausmus lost control of this team a long time ago and now all we can do is look to next year.

    1. Spot on KW! I have always felt there has been problems in the clubhouse.

  6. The most amusing part is everyone still get paid the same thing they got paid in May….the absolutely hilarious part is the bullpen has a coach…and he gets paid…bbbaaahhhhh!!!!!
