Game 2014.118: Pirates at Tigers

Tonight it’s young Buck Farmer who takes the mound and tries to stop the bleeding.  Farmer began the season with the West Michigan Whitecaps (A) and put together a 10-5 record with 2.60 ERA and a 1.109 WHIP. He was moved up to Erie recently and had two starts there (1-0, 3.00, 1.167). Farmer throws strikes: he has struck out 127 this season against only 28 walks.

The news on Justin Verlander is tentatively good. His MRIs showed no damage, although they are being sent to specialists for a second opinion. He may miss as little as one start.

Here are today’s roster moves:

  • Kevin “Way Over His Head” Whelan was optioned back to Toledo.
  • The Tigers purchased the contract of RHP Buck Farmer from AA Erie.
  • Eric catcher Ramon Cabrera was designated for assignment by Detroit to make room for Farmer on the 40-man roster, and was claimed off waivers by the Pirates.

In the meantime, Torii Hunter thinks that maybe having to fight for first will be good for the team in the long run.

Tonight’s Carrera-Leads-Off Lineup:

  1. Carrera, CF
  2. Kinsler, 2B
  3. Cabrera, 1B
  4. V Martinez, DH
  5. Hunter, RF
  6. Kelly, LF
  7. Castellanos, 3B
  8. Avila, C
  9. Suarez, SS

  1. Has DD or anyone else running the team given Assmus a “vote of confidence?
    Will the Buck stop here?

    1. Buck Farmer is a great baseball name. Although his given name (George Farmer) is redundant.

    2. If this losing streak continues much longer, it’ll be time for the media to ask those questions. Maybe this is why DD kept Lamont around after all–if they need to can Ausmus, an experienced manager is sitting right next to him.

  2. I’m mystified how Avila can get called out on strikes so often on pitches right down the middle of the plate.

      1. Remember Magglio’s saying that you don’t need to think when you are batting.

    1. Just for fun, type in “Avila struck out looking” in Google. Plenty of hits! On Google, that is, not for Avila. Guy seems to rarely strike out swinging. No, he saves the swinging for the GIDP to 2nd.

  3. This one is over. You can’t expect the Sluggos to make up 4 runs to possibly win all in one day. That would take at least two days…Nice try Buck. Get back to Erie where you have a chance cause they can score!

  4. Buck’s night appears to be over and he is headed for the corral.

  5. Money doesn’t grow on trees. But if it did, a Buck Farmer would be useful to have around.

      1. Why, thank you! Hate to let a good name go to waste. He might turn out to be a pretty decent pitcher also.

    1. Castellanos tagged out Mercer. The only reason the call stood was the replay’s failure to satisfy the “conclusive” requirement. No big deal, but it did cost Farmer (not that impressed, don’t see a lot of buck farming in his future based on this short look) a cleaner outing. Young and possibly curious George didn’t really buck the trend of so-so outings from Tigers pitching “debutantes,” but then again, he didn’t buy the farm, either.

Ezequiel Carrera was the real debutante. (The word comes from “leading off.”)

  7. The Pirates some nice uni’s. I couldn’t help though but think…. I wonder when some group will protest the Pirates use of Pirates as mascots!!!…I mean Pirates, Redskins, Patriots, 49ers all seem about the same to me. You pay a billion bucks you can name them whatever you want!

  8. Heidi just showed the highlights ( and that’s not all she was showing, if you get my drift) and I was happy to see some situational hitting w/ RISP. Loved all the farmer jokes… we have farms around these parts… favorite farmer joke: What is the difference between a puppy and a wheat farmer? Puppies are cute when they whine…

MASH LIne: I played left drift in high school.. who said it and what was the episode about???

    1. My first reaction before reading the article was “WTF, the guy pitches one game and they trade him already?”
