Game 2014.112: Tigers at Yankees

What’s the best way to cure a struggling offense? Sit Miguel Cabrera, says Brad Ausmus.

1. Davis, LF
2. Carrera, CF
3. Kinsler, 2B
4. Martinez, DH
5. Martinez, RF
6. Kelly, 1B
7. Castellanos, 3B

    1. I would consider Smokey Jr. more of a baby-sitter than a competent MLB manager.

  1. This looks like a sure 2.5 lead over KC for sure. Hey Smokey Jr. The idea is to try and win!!!

  2. since the AS break:
    Davis: .306/.320/.367/.687
    Kinsler: .202/.227/.250/.477
    VMart: .307.341/.427/.768
    JMart: .190/.250/.333/.583
    Casty: .220/.291/.400/.691
    Avila: .176./.218/.314/.532

    1. I didn’t post Hunter, Suarez and Cabrera because they are not in the lineup, and too much effort for the bench guys but for completeness:
      Hunter: .268/.379/.482/.861
      Suarez: .222/.294/.267/.561
      Cabrera: .329/.395/.474/.869

  3. That was a quick 1-2-3 first for Rick, but the fact that it was all fly balls makes me nervous.

  4. Ricky is pitching a good game. It appears we cannot score. Wonder if Ausmus uses Miggy or does the Leyland Jr move.

  5. That kid dominated us. I’m going to stick around for the 9th to see if Robertson can retire the side on 3 pitches.

  6. Anyone know why Cabrera is pinch hitting for JD Martinez? Seems like JD should’ve batted with nobody out, and Cabrera then pinch-hit for Kelly.

    1. I don’t get it at all. Even if JD hits into a DP, then you’ve still got Cabrera pinch-hitting with a chance to tie/take the lead.

      1. It might be one of the worst in-game decisions Ausmus has made so far. I look forward to hearing his explanation in the post-game. Awful awful awful.

    1. Let’s be clear, Miggy is hitting just fine. He’s not going to hit at a 1.100 OPS all the time.

The whole team is in a hitting funk. Gotta point the finger at Ausmus and Wally Joyner (I’d also like to blame Lloyd McLendon). Sitting Miggy today, and the PH for JD is bewildering. Hopefully someone will ask Ausmus about this after the game.

      1. Since the AS break (21 games) the Tigers have scored 79 runs. In 16 of those games they have scored 4 runs or fewer. In their last 13 games, they have scored 42 runs, have scored more than 4 twice (11 & 7), been shutout twice and scored 1 four times.

    1. But yes, I’m just as frustrated as you. You hate to feel that you care more about losing than the players do, though I doubt that’s the case.

But I do feel that way.

  7. STUPID! You have to let Martinez bat and then let Cabrera for Kelly. You have to be kidding me

  8. The Tigers brought a top-of-the-line starting rotation to Detroit, who all pitched well. Yet they were one improbable extra-inning Avila HR away from being swept. Very not-ready-for-prime-time.

    1. It’s nice to have Price, but trading for him didn’t address out two most pressing issues – an extra bat and the bullpen. In fact, it reduced our offensive production by trading Jackson. The end result is that our starting pitching is better every 5th day, while our run scoring potential is worse every day. I think this series is a fair gauge of how that is going to work out against the better teams at least – we won the game Price pitched (barely), but lost the other three while scoring 2 runs. I also like the addition of Carrera, but he is a table setter with not much power. We are even more short of power now.

  9. The 2003 Tigers would have split or won this series. 0.092 earned runs a game??? WTF? And yes, that speaks to the Tigers hitting and not to the Yankees pitching.

@ Porcello… Sorry kid, apparently you have to throw a no-hitter in this line up just to get yourself a no-decision…

    Wow. Just wow. Pathetic.

  10. 3 RBI in 12 games is NOT and I repeat NOT hitting just fine! Miggy is not on the team to hit singles..

  11. I have complained that Asmus doesn’t do anything….after PH for Martinez with Cabrerra, Brad go back to doing nothing……my bad!

  12. Brad..”I really like the way we swung the bats today, versus yesterday. Yesterday we swung at pitches out of the strike zone and today we missed pitches in the strikezone”……wow thanks Brad. I was kinda worried there for awhile! Glad to know you don’t think scoring frickin 0 is much of a problem…

  13. I’m still perplexed by the Cabrera for JD pinch-hit. If Cabrera hits a double there, VMart doesn’t score, so you’re still relying on Kelly’s spot in the lineup to take the lead.

  14. The other day someone (can’t remember who, sorry) wondered how the Tigers were doing against teams over .500:
    over .500 – 32-27
    under .500 – 30-23

    In the division (24-21) vs:
    KC 9-4
    CLE 5-7
    CHI 6-6
    MN 4-4

  15. Tigers face Dickey today who throws very few strikes. Thats how he has 11 losses. However he made fools of the Tiger hitters( easy to do)..when he faced them in Detroit..look for the Sluggos to flail away again today. This won’t be pretty! Tigers have 0 patience for these kind of pitches just like we saw in NY
