Game 2014.109: Tigers at Yankees

On April 29, Justin Verlander pitched 7 innings of 3 run ball, and started a run of 7 quality starts in 8 games, during an 8 game Tiger winning streak. “Quality Start” is not descriptive enough, as the Tigers’ staff allowed 3 runs or less in 6 of those 8 games.

On May 12, Porcello turned in a 6 inning, 5 hit, 1 ER performance which launched a 6 game winning streak which saw the staff allow a total of 10 ER, and 5 of those were in a single Verlander victory over Baltimore. Five of the 6 starts were quality.

Here are the starting pitching lines over the last three games:

8 IP, 8 H 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 12 K

That’s a .74 WHIP and 13.5/1 K/BB. Yes, it was Colorado without three of their top offensive players, but you still gotta make the pitches. I’m pumped to see what Max brings tonight knowing that Price debuts tomorrow.

(Interesting to note that the Tigers have also had two winning streaks of 5 or more when they did not get too many quality starts)

  1. Avila still on vacation apparently. 0 for 9 w/bases loaded. The good news is he didn’t GDP I guess.

  2. Offense is scoreless in 10/11 last innings and Bad Max on the mound – not looking good.

  3. Well, at least they are running Cy McCarthy’s pitch count up. He should be gone after/during the sixth and then we can get down to business.

  4. For the past 2-3 weeks Cabrerra looks like the last thing he wants to do is play baseball….this was just one game out of many lately he had not even tried …that AB was pathetic!

    1. the man is prolific in that (K) category…on par w/Adam Dunn (minus the HR’s)

  5. Not a particularly inspiring effort as the offense sleepwalks through another one. But, as they say, that’s baseball.

  6. Nice game pitching and on D….with 11 K’s the Sluggo’s didn’t do much. But we have seen this before…Sorry Max!

  7. pretty amazing that Scherzer only gave up 2 runs tonight… a little help from defense and NYY, but all for naught… with the exception of VMart (who hit the ball hard every AB) not many good AB’s from DET hitters tonight.

McCarthy has been pitching pretty well lately, but c’mon 5 2/3 of shutout 5 hit baseball?!?! …the only DET run was unearned.

  8. Starting pitching is not the reason this team will not make it to the last team standing….its the total lack of offensive production that we see over and over and over..since break….3-10 vs real baseball teams not named the Rattlesnakes and Rockies!!!!

  9. in my opinion, AJackson doesn’t get to that Elsbury fly-ball Carrera caught tonight in CF… and I doubt Davis would have either

he got a good jump on the ball and covered a lot of ground in a hurry to catch up with it – and at the time, he saved Scherzer’s bacon

  10. on June 5th, LAA was 31-28, then they went 35-16 in the past two months, now they’re 66-44. There’s a lot of talk about the A’s being the best AL team and threat to DET, but personally, I believe LAA poses a bit more of a threat to DET

  11. We threw Aces at LAA and couldn’t beat them…LAA threw average pitchers at the Tigers and shut them down…I don’t mind losing to a good pitcher or the Chris Sales of baseball, but the number of less than average pitchers that can shut this team down amazes me…..that ain’t gonna happen in the playoffs..we can have Scherzer..Price..JV…Sanchez throw fantastic and it isn’t going to matter!…in my opinion!

  12. http://www.freep.com/article/20140805/SPORTS02/308050171/jim-johnson-detroit-tigers-oakland

desperation or trying to capture lighting in a bottle ‘on the cheap’? – DET could get lucky w/signing Johnson, he’s only 31 but I don’t see it happening – he’s been awful (6.92 ERA in 38 games) this year and his decline began last year w/BAL – there’s a reason they didn’t try to bring him back – and it wasn’t just money.

it is only a minor league contract… but this reminds me of when DET signed Valverde last year, and how well that did ‘not’ go (18 IN 6 HR’s)

this is an affirmation that DD is concerned about his bullpen – and as the article mentions, that Hanrahan likely won’t be a factor this year

    1. …as I recall he was a “can’t miss prospect”… the definitive word there being “prospect”

      1. At only 23 he probably still has some upside (think Rick Procello), and would be a good pickup for some team in deep rebuild mode. The Twins could do worse taking a shot at him, their starting pitching is somewhat better than last year, but still a couple arms short. FA hasn’t worked so well with them this year, as No-last-o, as my Twins fanatic friend calls him, has been just brutal. Houston might be another launching pad that could be a good place for Turner to land.

  13. I think the A’s are already figurring out that you don’t trade your everyday 4th hitter for a guy who onky pkays once every 5 days…Billy Beane is very good at his job, but that Cecpedes- Lester deal is a head scratcher!
