Game 2014.52: Tigers 2, Mariners 3

31-20, 1st place, 6 games up.

Two things caught my eye this morning as I read the papers (well, through the internet, on my cell phone).

1) VMart may have had one of the best at bats of his career yesterday. It looked good watching it, but think about this. He gets up 2-0, then watches 2 called strikes go by. He follows by fouling off 5 straight pitches, before ripping the 10th into the RF stands. Considering it effectively put the game away off of a Cy Young candidate (against all teams, not just the Tigers), it really was an incredible at bat.

2) Ausmus said after the game that Verlander’s velocity was up from the start of the game. I didn’t remember that, so I went back and checked. It was. 95 in the first inning, and he touched 98 in the 6th. This is HUGE. Really happy about that.

Tonight’s if it ain’t broke don’t change it series winning? lineup.

1. Kinsler, 2B
2. Hunter, RF
3. Cabrera, 1B
4. Martinez, DH
5. Jackson, CF
6. Avila, C
7. Castellanos, 3B
8. Romine, SS
9. Davis, LF

I’ll be checking in late. Talk to you guys then.

    1. I don’t know. The AL Central standings don’t mean a great deal to me and won’t until September (if even then). Every loss counts against ya and will come back to bite ya.

  1. Holaday olays less and less each week…And Avila just keeps dropping dropping dropping….dro…

  2. This Jackson, Avilla, Romine looks pretty weak. Do not know if these three can carry you to the Series unless our starters throw lights out through the playoffs.

  3. Young has thrown 100 pitches this game…I think the Tigers have swung at 85 of them….they have games like this once in awhile…..swing batter batter….swing batter batter….!!!!

    1. Maybe not 85 but it sure seems like they swing and ususly miss at every pitch he throw

  4. There’s only so much you can do when you’re up against Cy Young and Willie Maysquist.

  5. Hey HUNTER…how can you strike out when the pitcher doesn’t throw you one frickin strike!!!

  6. 10 minutes of excitement in basically a “no effort game”…did we swing and miss at 100 pitches today…gotta win tomorrow…need MX to be…..Max!

    1. For a loss, it was a very good game, I thought. Smyly pitching poorly (and at a slow pace) and looking like a guy with no confidence for the third consecutive start is the only sour note of any real significance.

  7. Number 1) Thanks for all the kind words.. it is fun to see the Tigers live, there is a very good baseball team we have there, listened to tonite’s game as I drove across the state, and arrived home in time to watch that last half inning. Davis had to take that last pitch, changed the whole game. M’s radio pointed out how many Tigers fans were at the game(s), I was impressed by that too.
