Game 2014.43: Rangers 9, Tigers 2

The Texas Rangers (22-24, 4th in the West, 11th in AL) visit the Detroit Tigers (27-15, 1st in the Central, 2nd in AL) for four games (1 PM, 7 PM, 4 PM, 1 PM), Yu Darvish against Robbie Ray in the first one Thursday.

SS Eugenio Suarez has been promoted to AAA Toledo. Rick Porcello (left side soreness that bothered him last two starts and delayed this one) should be ready to face the Rangers on Saturday. Prince Fielder will miss the beginning of the Tigers series and may not play at all.

  1. Honestly JL would never have let the Tigers wear those stupid zubaz? I bet Assmus didnt even know ahead of time. He has no control of this team. And he has no control of Cabrera. Think he said anything to Cabrera about getting tossed?

    1. Come down from the ledge, Bill. Tigers have a good team and a good manager. Lost a couple tight ones in extras and got swept, certainly no fun to watch three rough starts in a row from this hallowed rotation. But no crisis. Nothing wrong with the team having some fun with Zubaz or whatever. I’m sure they’re pretty level-headed about the losses, as a good team should be, and now that the sweep is in our rear-view mirror, we can be level-headed, too.

As long as they take the first one from Texas, that is. Otherwise, I might be joining you on the ledge.

      1. Everyone thinks Joe Maddon is the Ultimate Manager, and he has his team wearing stupid stuff all the time. With that caveat being said, I have to agree with Bill on the Zubaz gear. It’s more hideous than my asymmetrical 80’s haircut (oh yes I did).

  2. I am sorry but I am very worried! We have the best team in baseball with the worst manager! Hoping it works out though. One of my many concerns is he is working our starting pitchers WAY too much. Hoping it doesn’t lead to injuries. Ill try to calm down though.

  3. ask any longtime Tiger fan and they’ll tell you its a roller coaster ride, don’t get comfortable with the highs or the lows.

DET Tiger fans have been a bit spoiled for the past few years, but despite having some of the best hitters and pitchers in the MLB, DET fans are never too far away from a reality check…which is what they rec’d in CLE this week. It’s a 162-game marathon.

…plus for reassurance, just remember they’re still in the AL Central

    1. Well said Norman. One thing I did pick up from yesterday’s game was what life could be for the Tigers without Cabrera. His ejection did significantly change the personality of the line up as well as impacted V-mart’s at bats. However, a tip of the hat for inserting Avila into the line up as it helped smooth the lineup and even paid off.

  4. Just do not like to Ole Smokey favoritism shown Coke. Sometimes with Ole Smokey he would leave a guy out to doom him down to the minors. With Coke that never happens. Once the trade for Romine took Alvarez out of the equation, it put Coke in our lineup barring injury for 2014.

  5. 50/50 balls to strikes. It will be interesting to see who we have to pitch today since this was our extra starter who was in the bullpen. How about Coke and see if they can score 20+ runs today.

    1. And 27-15 since the start of the season. Assuming we are 27-16 tomorrow morning, that’s a 102 win pace, which will win the AL Central by about 12 games.

This sucks, but if we’re gonna get routed, best be against Darvish.

  6. Darvish is tough, but this is ugly, all around: pitching, hitting, fielding, base running.

  7. Well if Rick gets bombed tomorrow thats once thru the whole rotation with stink bombs….someone has to end it niw that the real offense is upon us…

  8. Hey, I know what would be fun–let’s bring in Coke with the bases loaded!

  9. Hey Brad maybe we need to start doing the ittle things to get back on track..Seeing that Jackson is 2 for May…moving him out of the 6 spot would be a start…

  10. Coke will be lights out , fist pumping, sky pointing in a game like this. Perfect game to use him..

  11. the silver-lining – no injuries and Darvish’s start is out of the way (and kind of wasted in light of TX’s offense output)

…nice to see so many DET fans sticking around at Comerica despite what’s going on in this game

  12. Leys see use Coke and AlAl in extra innings and use Smyly in a 9-2 game…. Asmus you just might pass Mumbles as the all time worst ” pitching manager in only 3 months…

  13. At the present rate Miggy will K 30-40 more times this year compared to each of the last 5 years…and I know Darvish is an exception but Miggy hasn’t exactly faced Primo pitching this year so far…

  14. And here comes the rest ofCC the AL Central … this sucks boys!!!…no pitching…only two guys hitting…the BOBS are horrible…terrible defensive outfield…bullpen woes….poor pitching management…how in the world have these guys won 27 games….

  15. Bad day all around, the 10-0 12u Indians ( grandson plays, Dad coaches, “Papa” helps with the pitchers) dropped their 1st game tonite. Told their coach that even the ’27 Yankees lost a few, and so have the ’14 Tigers. The great thing about this game is there is always a tomorrow, lets all hope they shake off this Zubaz fog soon.

  16. Just a bad spell. Even the ’84 team lost 4 in a row twice. Burn the Zubaz and all will be well.

    1. I have been having fun working with these kids, making them better pitchers. Favorite moment: worked with one boy for about 5 minutes, and he went out dealing. His Dad comes over, says,”What did you do?” Told him I showed him how to hold a baseball. His comment,”There’s a special way?” Yep.
