Game 2014.40: Tigers 3, Indians 4

Standings Check:

Det   27-12   —
KC    22-21    7
Min  21-21    7.5
Chi   21-24    9
Cle   19-25   10.5

My car had a mechanical failure and I sat around in my work parking lot in Jams all day.

Lots to talk about, coming post-game.

Tonight’s Put Kelly in Coach Lineup:

1. Kinsler, 2B
2. Hunter, RF
3. Cabrera, 1B
4. Martinez, C
5. Kelly, CF
6. Castellanos, 3B
7. Avila, C
8. Romine, SS
9. Davis, LF

Postgame:

Corey Kluber struck out 7 of the first 12 outs he notched, and only 1 of the last 9.  His stuff was NASTY early on. BOOBS did a hell of a job to tie it up; twice.

I don’t think it’s useful to gang up on Romine’s (lack of) hitting. He was our third option at SS, and is doing a fine job defensively.

Smyly got lit up like a christmas tree. A 2.4 WHIP, over 5 innings, should not keep you in the game. The Indians are not good.

Coke was terrible, again. And yet his ERA plummeted by over 1/2 a run.

JV up tomorrow.

  1. “My car had a mechanical failure and I sat around in my work parking lot in Jams all day.”

Is that anything like sitting around in Zubaz all day?

  2. Wow. I’ve never seen Smyly looking worse. Barely got out of there. Could be a long evening.

    1. Who is our long-man if Smyly flounders early? Ray is starting Thursday, so he’s out.

      1. Thru 3… Smyly still not pitching well. Getting through 6 will require a lot of help from the Indians. Which may be forthcoming, one hopes.

  3. Eduardo Perez is painful to listen to on ESPN. Switching back to Dan and Jim.

    1. Indians TV guys made me switch to Mario and Rod.

Boy is it quiet in Cleveland.

      1. Even last year attendance was bad. That was a big part of why they didn’t spend this past winter.

  4. Casty still has not figured out how to handle breaking pitches down and away. Until he does he is going to continue to be struck out by opposing pitchers with those type of pitches.

    1. It must look considerably different from Nick’s point of view, those predictable off-speed pitches away swung at and missed for strike three. If he saw how it looks from ours, he’d be pretty embarrassed.

  5. Ugly game. First time I’ve been tempted to turn one off this season. They’re not looking very 27-12 tonight.

    1. Sleep deprivation due to plane malfunction maybe, but what is Smyly’s excuse, he went ahead a day early.

  6. If the Tigers had a long man (they don’t), now would be the time. Certainly no later than starting the 5th. Smyly simply doesn’t have it. It’s that bad.

  7. Never send Drew Smyly ahead of the team. Being alone in Cleveland was not good for young Drew. I welcome Coke, and Imean that most sincerely. Smyly’s gaffe in the 4th is among the stupidest plays I’ve seen in 2014.

  8. Kluber has been the Tribe’s most reliable starter this year. He might go 9 tonight.

  9. Strange that Castillanos can take a fastball the other way to right center but not the breaking ball…it looks like he is trying to pull the breaking ball and misses it completely….a lot!!.

  10. Worth must be hurt how else can you explain batting an automatic 0-4 everday!??

  11. To a man, the Tigers are a collection of hangovers. That’s how you lose to the Cleveland Astros.

      1. I take that back about V-Mart and maybe Kelly. Miguel can probably still hit when he’s drunk.

  12. It is pretty bad when I went from ESPN over to Indians broadcast because the obnoxious fan on the ESPN broadcast was really annoying me. They are really working Smyly to avoid Coke. Will see if Coke comes out at the top of the 6th. We are really lucky that this game is only 3-1 not 7 or 8 to 1.

      1. Kluber is pitching like an ace. Smyly was as bad as we’ll see him. But we’re still in it.

        Lots of baseball left.

    1. Kluber wasn’t looking too good early, either. They let him get away.

  13. Avila and Romine brothers of the “no hit” both take a hanging curveball for strike two then both swing at a pitch neither could hit with a tennis racquet……..meanwhile Worth and Holaday sit and sit and sit and siiiiiii………

  14. Wow, Coke, really. Reminds me when Ole Smokey left Jones out to pitch like 40 against Cleveland and lose the game.

  15. Hey Smyly I have a good suggestion for the next time you pitch. Try and get your pitch all the way to the catcher in the air instead of on one bounce. Becuase if you come out of the game Coke comes in and you are really screwed!!! And those 15 pitches you bounced up there were all balls!!!

    1. Yeah, incredible amount of bounced pitches and other pitches that missed low.

  16. Coke’s habit of pointing at every fly ball is annoying to me. Especially when they leave the yard.

  17. Good old Phil. Can’t wait to hear what a good pitch the 0-2 to Aguilar really was. I’m tipping my cap already.

  18. I knew the win streak was gonna end sometime BUT never in my wildest expectations did it occur to me it would be beacuse we finally used Phil Coke!!!!!

  19. We pull this one off with this lineup and we take the next two for sure. Not over yet but I really doubt that we will see Holaday, Jackson, or Worth. That at least would be trying to pull one out.

  20. Don’t understand using Krol here. Don’t you want to save your LOOGY in case you tie it? And 2 of the 3 Indian batters are RH.

  21. I almost typed this yesterday that I would like to see JD hit a homer before going back to Toledo just to know he can……..well he can!!!!!!

  22. Can’t wait to read tomorrow how Phil Cokes great pitching almost saved that game…..in 1 and1/3 years Coke has 0 wins and 0 saves and makes over $1,000,000…nice gig!

  23. A season in ruins
It came apart in Cleveland town
    Ominous Zubaz

    O bitter ev’ning
    Brave lad Smyly now fallen
    Tragic figure Coke

    Bizarre it is to
    Lose to Astros in Ohio
    J.D.’s labors lost

    1. Haiku is more difficult than it seems:

      There.

  24. Stephen Drew is off the table, just signed with Red Sox for rest of season.
