  1. This is a shocker, and a bit of a head-scratcher. Signing Fielder almost ensures that the Tigers have to find a position for Cabrera (hopefully 3rd) – because in ’13 VMart will DH.

…so i guess when Inge was complaining about not wanting to platoon with anyone at 3B, he couldn’t have imagined that the somebody might be Cabrera.

i smell a trade for an established starting pitcher… in the last year of his contract

    1. Long term, we have 3 1B/DHs…if the solution is to move Cabrera back to 3rd, that may mean that Castellanos is suddenly a lot more available to deal for a pitcher.

      1. It may also make Detroit a more attractive destination for FA or trade candidate with no-trade clause, etc.

  2. Guess of all the links from yesterday, the DD Says Don’t Worry Tigers Will Be Fine was the relevant one.

    1. at his age, i’m sure that thought has crossed his carpet-covered mind a few times… you can’t take the cash with you, but you can be buried wearing your World Series championship ring

  3. Buy now, cry later! This is a great move for first year or two but lord have mercy it’s going to be the albatross of all albatrosses in 2014 or 2015. Obviously, not Ilitch’s concern.

    1. Cabrera’s last year of his contract is 2015.

Fielder has averaged 40 homers and 113 RBIs over the past five years and he’s been among the most durable players in the majors, appearing in at least 157 games in each of the last six seasons.

  4. With likely the worst IF defense in baseball (statues at 1B and 3B if Cabs moves there), the pitching staff is going to get a workout. I’m big on groundball pitchers, but now I find myself thinking that they need to find a flyball pitcher to fill that vacant rotation spot.

I’m not convinced this is the best way to address the Tigers’ deficiencies, but I guess it will put fannies in the seats (at least initially) and if Fielder doesn’t turn into Adam Dunn 2.0, will probably pay for itself in the long run.

We still need a leadoff hitter to set the table for these guys, so I hope they aren’t done.

  5. Just tell Inge if he wants to start at 3rd base he needs to hit .344, hit 30 home runs, and knock in 105 RBIs. He’ll understand.

    1. I don’t think Prince Fielder will be able to produce those numbers, and Cabrera won’t be able to produce as well as Inge defensively, so I think Inge should have the right to play 3rd base with lower offensive output than that. He could do a lot lower and it would still make more sense to just force Prince to play DH, or even DH Cabrera if you had too if Inge could show credibility to being an offensive force this year.

      1. @TSE Inge is a career .234 hitter and leads the Tigers in career strikeout. His credibility done gone and went.

        1. That’s irrelevant as you are talking about the past. I’m talking about a hypothetical in the future whereas he has established the credibility. That’s theoretically possible no matter how remote it may seem to be. Those odds are in fact great than 0%.

      2. Another big tool for Leyland’s tool box. Remember last year when DonKel and others came into the outfield late in the game for defensive purposes and giving others a rest?

        1. Wait, I just realized you just called Inge a “big tool”…I have serious competition for funniest Inge post…

  6. I agree. Spend now. Get Mr I. his World Series. The only issue is who we send out to get on base for these two. I would like to see AA and Johnny move up. It drives me nuts that Leyland put whoever plays 2nd, number 2, AJ #1, etc. I think I can make his lineup cards blindfolded. #3, #4 and next year #5 should be one of the best in the league.

  7. Happy Birthday Ernie! I hope you had a long and enjoyable walk up there when you heard the news that another Fielder is wearing the Tiger D.

  8. We have a window of opportunity here that won’t last long…we could have the largest infield in MLB history. We have the corners nailed down. Peralta is sufficient at SS. So the question is, who is the biggest 2nd baseman in baseball? Santiago/Raburn just won’t do, unless they are somehow there simultaneously. (Some consider the catcher part of the infield, some not…if so, we have a problem…might be a bit thin at catcher).

    1. Laird isn’t exactly svelte. they list him at 225, but they also list Miggy at 240, and that appears to be off by a good bit.

Throw in Valverde in the 9th and we will win the buffet-line competition, that is for sure.

anyone remember the SI article in 1991 about the Tigers lineup that included Fielder, Incaviglia, Tettleton, Deer, etc? 4 players with over 150 K’s, I think.

the title was “Gorillas of the Missed”
