DTW News and Notes

A few notes amid the clearing bowl fog and settling NFL storm.

– JV will be on Conan tomorrow night.

– Mario Impemba won the Michigan Sportscaster of the Year award today.  This should look nice on his mantle next to his “World’s Most Patient Man” and “Least Likely to Point Out Grammatical/Journalistic/Fact” awards given out by Kevin in Dallas.  Just kidding…I see you RA.

– Barry Larkin was voted into the HoF yesterday.  Jack Morris is inching closer, garnering 67% of the votes yesterday.  I saw this on FreepMorris received a higher percentage of voters than Boston’s Jim Rice and Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven did two years before their respective elections to Cooperstown.

– The Tigers quietly signed Eric Patterson to a Minor League contract last Friday, supposedly closing out the 2B prospects.  Uh….

– Here’s your obligatory Kerry Wood rumor.  Quick prayer for a pass.  My favorite part about the articles is the acknowledgement of a $1.5M tag for Wood last year, and then a suggestion that the Tigers offer Wood $4M for 2012.

  1. I learned via Jason Beck’s article, that local hometown (Vicksburg) native, Justin Henry, has been invited to Tiger Spring Training. Henry played college ball at Ole Miss and has played in the Tigers A, AA, and AAA system. Last year, he had a good season both in batting, fielding, and stealing bases playing second and learning the role of a utility man. I hope he gets a good chance to show his magic. His brother Jordan plays AA for the Cleveland Indians.

    Put Tram in the Hall!

  2. The HOF really doesn’t mean much to me. Barry Larkin was a good player but nothing special. The HOF designation just doesn’t hold much credibility to me.

  3. Zoom Zoom to the Twinkies. With the Twins depleted bullpen we might see him. I think he torched his arm. Wish he would have learned to have better mechanics and better off speed pitches earlier in his career.

  4. Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez suffered a torn ACL during his offseason training and will likely need surgery to repair the damage.

An MRI exam Monday in Lakeland, Fla., revealed the injury.

The Tigers said Martinez will be re-evaluated next week, but if surgery is necessary Martinez will likely miss the entire 2012 season.

Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBIs last season in helping Detroit win the AL Central.

Huge Bummer there. Lets get Fielder

    1. Fielder won’t DH, so I think that’s out.

Some are talking about Carlos Pena, but I’m not too impressed.

Johnny Damon is an option, too.

Another is to successfully sign Cespedes, as I think the Tigers were going to try to do, but also keep Delmon Young rather than trading him.
