Toledo 2, Lehigh Valley 6 (Phillies)
Andy Oliver (LHP) dropped to 7-9 after allowing 4 runs (3 earned) over 5 innings. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Jose Ortega (RHP) was equally mediocre as he gave up two more runs in 3 innings of relief.
Inge had a totally dominant performance: 4-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI. In fact, other than Ryan Streiby’s single, no other Mud Hen recorded a hit against Lehigh pitching. In his last 4 games, Inge is 7-15 with a double, 2 HR, and 6 RBI.
Erie 6, Portland 2 (Red Sox)
LJ Gagnier (RHP) earned the win after allowing just 1 ER over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out an impressive 10 batters while walking just 3. Luis Marte (RHP) struck out 4 over 3 1/3 to pick up his 2nd save.
Justin Henry (LF) was 3-4 with a double, a triple, and 2 RBI. Jamie Johnson (CF) went 1-4 with a double, a walk, and a RBI.
Lakeland 3, Brevard County 4 (Brewers)
Brian Stroud (RHP) was the losing pitcher after he gave up 4 runs (3 earned) over just 4 1/3. The worst part of his outing was that he gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 4.1 – a WHIP of 2.3. Despite 2 wild pitches, Tyler White (RHP) had a solid outing: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB. White boasts a 0.69 ERA over 13 innings of relief work with Lakeland.
Jordan Lennerton (1B) went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Despite a season average of .251 with Lakeland, Lennerton is hitting .324 in his last 10 games. During that span he’s gone 12-37 from the plate with 2 2B and 3 HR while driving in 9 runs. Additionally, he’s struck out 10 times and walked 7. I think he may be starting to “get it” and might start next year with Erie if this pattern continues through the end of the season.
West Michigan 10, Dayton 5 (Reds)
Victor Larez (RHP) looked dominant in a starting role for WM: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, W. Larez was relieved by Nate Newman (RHP) who tried his best to lose. In 2/3 of an inning of work, Newman gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on a hit and 3 walks. Jade Todd (LHP) salvaged the game over an inning and a third of scoreless relief work.
Jason Krizan (OF) went 2-5 with a run scored, a HR, and 3 RBI. In 114 ABs with WM, Krizan is hitting .272. Nick Castellanos (3B) was 3-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. In 423 ABs, Castellanos is producing .307/.358/.435 with 20 2B, 3 3B, 6 HR, and 66 RBI.
Its nice to see Inge having success against AAA pitching. His BA is up to .326 w/6 HR’s in 89 ABs – he still has 23 SO’s, so he’s consistent in that dept.
He should be useful as a call-up when the roster expands, but i secretly hope he goes on an offensive tear in AAA and some contending team (in need of a 3B) offers to take Mr Inge and the remaining portion of his contract off the Tiger books in return for a decent prospect. I’m pretty sure that’s probably not going to happen, but ‘hope’ is cheap.
Going on a tear and then getting picked up by another contending team on exchange for a good prospect is a dream scenario and I’d _____ in my pants if that occured. Most likely what will happen is that 4A-BInge and his average D will return in September where he will split time with Betemit, batting .200 and frequently striking out on breaking pitches low and away. He’s 34 and well past the age of miracle cures for whatever ails his sorry bat.
Not too late for Brandon to call me and have me teach him how to modify his hitting approach. He tried it his way and the Tiger’s way his whole career and it didn’t work. He should have taken my advice and scrapped what they tell him and listened to what I have to say. His loss.
Perry has been called up from Toledo to replace Alburquerque who went on the 7-day DL with a concussion and internal bleeding (yikes). I’d be surprised if he’s back in 7 days, but let’s hope it isn’t long-term. Alburquerque to Perry is a huge downgrade.

He’s the Tiger’s property and he’s under Tiger’s surveillance and management. Nothing is mind boggling when something stupid happens. Everything is the result of the choices we make and the talent we put in place to make those choices. Don’t act surprised, I’ve been complaining about this team doing everything wrong on the field and off the field, and this is just more of the same of how they operate. With incompetence and ignorance.
Perry???? Oh my god!!!!! What are they thinking? Mangement Clown Show Alert! Baseball is a pretty complicated game, all in all, but there is no logical reason to make it more diffficult than it has to be.
The pressure is now on the starters for the next week to go at least 7 in order to prevent him getting in any game.
Perhaps I am being a bit over the top, but I feel better now.
Good luck with AA on his recovery; hope it isn’t serious. Head injuries can be pretty scary – I had one as a child and suffered from mild epileptic seizures for eight years following.
I don’t know how much you know about his background, but the reason we got him for nothing is that he was having trouble staying on the field because of arm/shoulder pain and severe migraines, which it turns out were being caused by severe dental problems (I don’t want to think about it, really. Good scouting there though). So he’s the last guy who needed a line drive to the head.
Oh don’t worry, Leyland stated that he will be ok. Ok for what I have no idea, but apparently Leyland is confident that he will know exactly what’s going on at the atomic level of this guy’s brain to be able to know that it’s going to be ok as far as anybody needs to be concerned. Thanks for reconciling the mysteries of how the human brain works Jim.

Yeah, it’s called the old school laws of neuroscience. Getting clunked on the head is a non-issue, you just tough it out, shake the cobwebs out, have yourself a shot of whiskey, and tomorrow it will be like it never happened. You can trust me soldier, I wouldn’t lie to you.
Personally I’d go a pitcher short for a while and up a catcher, Santos I suppose, and give Avila a couple of days off before his legs crumble.
i agree, with Martinez not being an option at catcher, they should call up Santos… i know JL thinks he can put Kelly behind the plate, but personally, i’d sooner bring in Kelly as a relief pitcher than start him as catcher – especially if the only other relief option was Perry.
