Game 2011.127: Tigers at Rays

Hello all – work is not really cooperating with the essay I’d like to write on the Catch & Throw alone, so I’m hoping that an early post will lead to some good pre-game chatter.  That link is great b/c you can hear the TV and radio calls.  Did anyone else notice that Inge was one of the first to congratulate Jackson?  (when he’s hitting) I love that guy.

– AJax has not registered a strike out in his last 8 games.  The longest such streak of his career (by 4 games).

Tonight’s lineup:

1. Austin Jackson, CF
2. Brennan Boesch, RF
3. Delmon Young, LF
4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
5. Victor Martinez, DH
6. Alex Avila, C
7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
8. Wilson Betemit, 3B
9. Ramon Santiago, 2B

  1. Inge is always the first to congratulate everyone, he’s the first guy Cabrera seeks out to bump with after a win, he’s the first on the scene if a brawl breaks out, he’s the first with a quote after the game…he’s off the chart on the Ingetangibles. When he hits I think it makes the whole team happy. When not…

    1. Which is why I am so upset that DD has made himself accountable to correct Brandon’s flaws and keep him more consistent. If he can’t do that then he shouldn’t have offered him the contract, again. So stick with him and make him good DD, or pay us back for failing at your job, just do one of the above for cryin’ out loud.

  2. VMart is out, and Don Kelly is playing 1B, Cabrera to DH. LOL Don Kelly as a major league first baseman, how disgusting. Where’s Ryan Strieby or Tony Plagman? I’d rather let Tom Brookens play, if we can’t put a logical player into the game mind as well have fun with it.

  3. New lineup:

    1. Austin Jackson, CF
    2. Brennan Boesch, RF
    3. Delmon Young, LF
    4. Miguel Cabrera, DH
    5. Alex Avila, C
    6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
    7. Wilson Betemit, 3B
    8. Don Kelly, 1B
    9. Ramon Santiago, 2B

    1. We should have put Don Kelly at 9, so that we could buy time before he gets up to the plate for the first time and then needs to be replaced by an eligible professional baseball player. How does this guy get paid to play baseball wtf?

  4. Matt Joyce has to feel good about his first AB against JV

Neiman has been VERY solid in his last 10 outings – with the Rays winning 8 of the last ten he’s started, losing only two – a 1-0 loss and a 5-4 loss. He’s going to be tough to get many runs off

    1. Yeah I’m a big Matt Joyce fan, I was salivating over replacing Magglio with him by not letting Magglio hit any of his previous qualifiers, cause that would have given us a good roster keeper for the future and with Boesch and company coming along shortly after it would have helped us nail down the outfield, save our draft picks for loads more infielders and pitchers, as well as a TON of money we could have used to bring in additional upgrades through trading away our other dead weight and picking up multiple long-term infield keepers on top of doing all that and winding up with lots of extra usable players while spending far less money. This team is such a pathetic result of loser mentality in the front office. Illitch has blown hundreds of millions of dollars in extra cost and forgone profits and is such a terrible owner. He’s easily the worst person in the state of Michigan that I can think of off the top of my head.

  5. Don Kelly is a great guy/teammate, and i can JL resting Vmart and giving Cabrera a day-off in the field, but a first-place team HAS TO have a better option than Don Kelly as the starting 1B – i can understand a defensive replacement, but not as a starter.

  6. Hafner his the 15 day DL today “strained right foot”.

CLE’s next 14 games are against SEA 4, KC 3, OAK 4, KC 3 – then the Tigers come to CLE. Losing Hafner is going to hurt, but they could win 10-11 of their next 14 games.

Meanwhile the Tigers next 14 are against TAM 4, MIN 3, KC 4, CWS 3. It’s going to be interesting.

    1. i can’t believe the Tigers don’t call up someone to give Avila a day off behind the plate, especially in light of Vmart’s back spasms

      1. Well if that guy is Omir Santos then I can believe it, cause he is almost as bad as Don Kelly. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and a good teammate though, but that’s worth jack squat in MLB if you have no value as a player to help the team in a positive way. Those guys are pure negatives in every sense of the word, as that is their overall contribution. It is impossible to justify salaries for them, it only makes sense to have them on the team if they pay us money to make it worth the penalties we receive in the games.

We don’t really have a competent catcher. Closest thing might be Rob Brantly from Lakeland, our 3rd round pick from 2010. He’s shown some semblance of a pulse in the past.

          1. Well naturally, we were talking in the context of alternatives to Avila and Vmart, and I saw that I neglected the word “backup” and would have changed it if there was an edit option, but nobody seems to care when I correct myself on typos and I thought that pretty much was obvious. Avila clearly has done well on defense and is arguably one of the leaders in offense in all of MLB at the position this year, so it wouldn’t make much sense to qualify him as incompetent, so I thought that part went without saying.

              1. Oh ok. Yeah I would have tried to clarify but he didn’t really specify a premise for his inquiry, so just trying to engage him in whatever it was he wanted to talk about. Rude jerks are entitled to answers too when a guy like me claims to have all of them! 😉

        1. Chicago has accomplished nothing this year being dead even at 63-63, yet that’s good enough for 2nd place, neat trick! lol

  7. After a 9 pitch at bat with the winning run on second, Mariners close out the game.

    Let’s go Papa G.

  8. Still having posting issue. Does anybody know who’s managing the site or how to get in contact with somebody that can look into the vanishing posts?

    1. I have access. I looked at the pending comments, and your only flagged comment was the one with an expletive from 8/10. Everything else is being posted.

      1. I’ve actually had this happen to me before. There are dead times where comments don’t post. If you cut and paste and try to repost them, you get the Dectected Duplicate Comment message, even though the original never appears. After a certain amount of time–20-40 minutes in my experience–it goes away and you can post again. I don’t know what it is, it doesn’t happen often, I just shrug and wait.

      2. I’ve considered the possibility that it is a spam filter thing–maybe based on consecutive comments. This would also possibly explain TSE issues.
