Game 2011.104: Tigers at White Sox

Loved that win yesterday.  JV fought through 2 bombs to keep the Tigers in it, and Betemit came through with a clutch 2 out RBI to win the ball game.  The way JV was gearing up in the 8th, I think he could have gone 9, but giving the ball to Valverde was the right move.  Bravo Jimmy. More JL props for leaving JV in there in the 8th after the 1 out walk with Konerko coming up.

I’d also like to point out that Jackson took the first pitch in all 5 ABs last night, and only swung and missed twice.  That K in the 9th sure looked like a walk to me.

Tigers look to payback the White Sox by taking the rubber game, and the series in Chicago.  I’m setting this to auto-post, so if there’s no lineup posted here, someone please fill it in for us.

  1. From Beck’s Blog:
    1. Austin Jackson, CF
    2. Ryan Raburn, LF
    3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
    4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
    5. Victor Martinez, DH
    6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
    7. Carlos Guillen, 2B
    8. Wilson Betemit, 3B
    9. Alex Avila, C

  2. Per David Schoenfield, we will have a Verlander vs Weaver matchup on Sunday. Already looking forward to it.

  3. So…which Max showed up today? It’s kinda starting to look like batting practice Max….

  4. Erwin Santana no-hit the Indians today, 3-1. The run was unearned and CLE put on a clown show with 5 errors.

    1. Which is kinda why this series with Chicago is so important. Cleveland is pretty much falling out of contention, Chicago could give us a run for our money.

    1. Raburn ‘batting 2nd’ is highly questionable and there could also be a healthy debate about why he is even in the lineup today.

VS Lefties vs Danks at US Cellular Field
      Boesch .330 .273 .313
      Raburn .248 .217 .250

      Another example of JL ogic?

  5. What a waste of an inning…It’s times like this that I just don’t understand why Ryan Raburn is batting 2nd…

  6. At this rate, we might get to see our great middle relief pitchers today. I was really starting to miss Purcey… Perhaps he can pull another Dontrelle.

  7. Tigerball – single, single, single = no runs. Since the Tigers don’t have enough speed to play small ball it would be really nice if Leyland would re-think his lineup strategy and go with the high OBP guys at the top as others have mentioned. The one guy with speed (JacKson) doesn’t get on enough to warrant the No. 1 slot and he Ks too much (although he got a hit there). Kaburn, who Ks too much is also ludicrous at the top of the order. Some power in the 3-slot would also be nice. Of course, none of this will happen.

      1. Leyland’s career will end when the team comes up short again and Illitch finally decides it is time for a management change. Leyland being a doofus won’t have anything to with it. The players will take the blame and the teflon manager will retain his standing as one of the all-time greats. Unless you’ve seen this guy bungle along game after game for six years, the opinion in the wider world is that he is one of the best.

  8. Another wasted inning…what the heck? I guess it is just going to be another one of those days…

  9. This is absolutely ridiculous….every inning get guys on base and then strike out the side…

    1. It’s all a ploy to make Danks throw a lot of pitches so we can get to their horrible bullpen. Perhaps I have been too hard on JL.

  10. To pick up in Vince in MNs thread above…

Do we give credit to DD for putting together a team that is in 1st place in spite of Leyland’s idiotsyncracies?

The Raburn batting 2nd thing is just baffling (until he hits a HR to win it in the 9th).

    1. Do we give credit to DD for sticking with Leyland and his idiotsycracies? How can the GM not be held responsible for a team’s collapse year after year? Do we give DD credit for assembling a slightly above average teams that (with the exception of ’06) seems to underperform year after year?

    1. Seriously….is he done now? Or is Ozzie going to run him out there for 200 pitches because our line-up is swinging at everything he’s throwing.

      1. i guess Ozzie thought the JV 120+ pitch games may be the new standard… or maybe he left in Danks for one too many hitters.

  11. Danks had been pretty sharp his previous 4 outings and that seems to have continued in this game – as the real story thus far has been the Tiger hitters have stranded 21 base runners.

with both Scherzer and Danks over 105 pitches, each team’s bullpen obviously will determine the winner.

Another good start for Scherzer – 116 pitches, and only 6 H and 2 ER

    1. Officially a quality start, but I don’t know if I would call 116 pitches with 6 hhits and 4 walks in 6 innings a good start.

  12. Well, I do agree with Jimmy’s decision to intentionally walk Konerko. We’ll see if it works out.

  13. What the hell was that, Carlos Quentin? You are supposed to be a one man clown show out there…
