2010 Winter Meetings: Day 3 (updated)

(updated as necessary)

Tigers talking to the Cubs about a a borderline 5th starter, but at least he’s a lefty.

– Ordonez is the apple of Boston’s eye, reports Danny Knobler, though Boras suggests that there are several serious suitors.  Maggs worked out today in Florida to show everyone how is ankle is doing.  Tigers are mum on what they saw.

Thoughts on how to use Guillen in 2011 from Lynn Henning.  Henning also had a good piece on how this has really been a seller’s market (blame Werth) and the Tigers may be able to rely on what they already have.

– Sheffield and Damon to unite in Tampa?

UPDATE – Crawford to the Red Sox

Jon Heyman of SI is reporting that the Red Sox have signed Crawford to 7 yrs for $142M.  (Just over $20M per year).  I’m guessing that the Red Sox are no longer interested in Maggs, and I’m wondering if they were using him as a means to play it cool around Crawford.

Look for the Tigers to settle with Maggs at around 2 for $19M in the next few days.

  1. all i have to say im tired of being a tigers fan sick of loosing sick of dombrowski sick of leyland sick of missing out on the good players like dunn im now converting to the white sox go SOX

    1. OK Then see ya,

Guess you weren’t a real fan anyway. None of us are going to agree with every deal. We are leaps and bounds ahead of the bottom dwellers around the league. Its a decent team that is competitive and fun to watch with the stars they have. Lets see how the rest of the meetings go. Good luck with the White Sox, Im sure you will enjoy listening to the Hawk crow 162 times next year

      1. I disagree, I’m more sick and tired than the poster above, and I consider myself a serious high-level fan. So Guillen is under contract for $13M this year. That’s a lot of money to pay to a guy who has never hit more than 10 homers in a year. His contract extension is 2007 was not justifiable and because of how poor of a value we got at the time the contract was signed, DD should be paying out of his pocket to reimburse for that money. Or go home. Take responsibility for your actions and pay what you owe or get the job done and win. It’s not that hard, be a pro or be a man or get lost, so I think we need to move on, invoke a plausible WINNING strategy to become the premier team in baseball. I’m tired of being embarrassed by this team when we have simple practical paths to being the best team in the game. It’s atrocious and unconscionable that we have to go day after day after day and still not have what we deserve. Why shouldn’t we complain and be furious with anger? I’m pretty upset that not more fans are screaming and shouting about the completely unacceptable results and gross incompetence.

I’m a fair guy I don’t demand that every sports teams win 100% of their games. But there’s losing respectably and losing irresponsibly and one is ok to justify and live with and another is not. And our franchise has failed well beyond minimum acceptable levels of competency. And we are still the #1 worst franchise in sports in my mind for how bad we do relative to how much we invest and how much opportunity to capitalize on that we fail to achieve.

        1. I agree about Guillen’s contract–it reminds me of that Castrol commercial with the car going down the freeway dragging the anchor–but i’m not sure where you got this:

“So Guillen is under contract for $13M this year. That’s a lot of money to pay to a guy who has never hit more than 10 homers in a year.”

He has averaged over 13 HR per season in Detroit, injuries and all.

            1. My bad I meant to say the last 3 years. My point is if you aren’t sure a guy is going to produce then you can’t give him that size of a contract. You gotta be sure if you aren’t going on prior statistical data, and Guillen did not have the stats at the time to justify the contract, so where’s the for sure part that he’s going to improve? You can’t bank on that, so you shouldn’t sign deals like that. Sorry for the bad post and error in the facts!

        2. I dislike complainers and bomb throwers like yourself. You bend the facts to fit your point, make statements that take nothing more than your reaction to the current day, and regardless of what you say you’d find something to be upset about. Should Guillen be making what he’s getting paid this year? Of course not, but when he was given this contract he was an intregal part of the Tiger offense and to keep such players clubs must pay what the market demands. At the time I’m sure you would have screamed bloody murder had the Tigers not signed Guillen, yet you have no problem Monday morning QBing years after the fact. The Tigers have spent more money than any similar market team over the last few years, Geez, they brought Cabrera here. Running a ballclub in this day and age is a difficult job, the competetion for talent and resources is massive. Just look at what a player like Werth just got, possibly one of the biggest overpayments in the history of free agent signings. It’s not your millions being tossed around like confetti, your may be a serious fan but your not a serious person if you can’t consider an owners dilemma. It’s not their job to give you everything that you want at their expense, it might help if you acted less like a little kid who has to have everything. The Tigers will be a solid contender in 2011, they may win it all or may not…but they will be competitive.

          1. Dan Z – I’m about 75% convinced that TSE is all schtick.

TSE – if you want to email me the 20 page letter you sent to the front office, I’d be happy to post it for everyone to discuss. Just confirm here and I’ll email you offline.

  2. Yes, the 2011 season is pretty much ruined already–why even play? Nothing to look forward to but the bitterness of watching Dunn lift aloft his World Series MVP trophy. Curses!

      1. The plan we need is one that is laced with trades. We need to exchange all our pieces for different pieces and then look at the FA list depending on what trades are consummated first. We need some deals and everybody is available.

  3. I for one remember 2003. While I am not a huge Leyland fan with Boesch in the 5 hole and whoever plays right field bats 3rd, I do think the team is improved from last year. Hopefully we can contend and not do our usual Leyland fade. Last year we had a few surprises from the Mud Hen callups. Even if one Mud Hen pans out, we should be a contender with the rest of our lineup.

    1. As of the moment, Peralta replaces the Everett/Santiago platoon at SS for the whole year and this can been seen as a definite upgrade I guess. Martinez in effect replaces Ordonez in the lineup, which to my mind is kind of a wash. Jackson may well fall off a bit from his rookie performance and Avila, Sizemore, Boesch, Rhymes, Worth and the rest of the Mudhens are all big ? marks. Tigers still need at least one more productive bat. And remember that the Twins and W.Sox haven’t exactly been sitting on their behinds this winter in terms of improving their respective offenses.

    2. Agreed. Once again, we have a team that’s a virtual lock to win 80 games +/- 12. I look forward to the positive outliers, of course, but I’ll never ask for more than to have a mid-market team that’s “consistently competitive”.

  4. We got a good young team thanks to Dombrowski and Illich.

The oldest player on the team is Carlos Guillen, he’s just 34 years old and on the last year of his contract. Guillen was actually one of the better players in the league in 2004, 2006, and 2007. So giving him that 4 year contract after the 2007 season was justified. In 2004 he was 24th in MVP votes, in 2006 he was 10 in MVP votes, and in 2007 he made the All Star team. Absolutely justified.

I’m delighted that we landed VMart. He’s a perfect fit for us and most experts agree. I’d also like to see us add another bat, but I’m not even sure if there is room for one. I think we’ll be OK with our corner outfielders being Boesch, Wells, and Raburn. I think one or 2 of these guys will be more than decent, kind of like how Craig Monroe and Marcus Thames were in 2006. Being that this team is still kind of young we could get improvement from nearly every spot on the roster.
