Game 2010.051: Indians at Tigers

Jeremy Bonderman takes on Jake Westbrook in a pitching match-up that sounds right out of 2007.

Westbrook has pitched okay at times, but he has been hurt by home runs of late with 4 allowed in his last 3 games. He’s done okay the first time through the order (653 OPS), but it starts to get rough for him the 2nd (804 OPS) and 3rd times through (968 OPS). Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Brandon Inge all have some positive histories against Westbrook.

Bonderman’s worst start of the year came against Cleveland, but it was washed out and doesn’t count against his impressive peripherals. Bondo is fanning nearly a batter per inning and his walk rate (2.69/9) and homer total (2) are both impressive.

  1. Now that the starting rotation is set…….let the season begin.

  2. I like Cabrerra, Boesch, Guillen much more than Cabrerra, Rayburn, Guillen.

  3. It seems that Miggy has been coming to bat to start an inning a lot lately. How about moving him up or down one spot in the lineup?

  4. We sure seem to have had more than our fair share or baserunners thrown out lately.

  5. Carlos has benn a pleasant surprise with his play at second base.

  6. Yes that was a nice play by Carlos. He seems fine at 2nd. (Except for his bat–he has been hitting sub-Sizemore since his return).

  7. Well, that was quick–4 pitches and about 3 minutes to get through our 2-3-4 hitters. This is very uninspiring.

  8. Thank goodness Bondo got out of that jam. A walk and a couple infield hits. He’s still pitching well. This is the Bondo we were hoping for.

  9. The Indians have maybe the worst bullpen in baseball…it would be nice if we could see it at some point in this series

  10. It seems like every game has Miggy coming up to lead off in the 8th or 9th when the Tigers are down two.

    1. This will be the third time tonite that Miggy has led off an inning.

  11. I’m not sure if you mean the bad throw to 1st or the mistake of lifting Westbrook, but, apparently, no.

  12. How many games have we lost this year where our starter had a quality start? I don’t know how I’d go about looking that up, but it’d be interesting to know. Or maybe our record when our starter pitches a quality start. It seems like lately we’ve lost quite a few games when the starter has pitched well. Bondo pitched well. We should be winning these games.

    1. In 51 games, Tiger starters have 22 QS, with 9 W’s, 5 L’s and 8 ND’s. The most recent four QS, Tigers starters are 0-2 with 2 ND’s. The 4 QS prior to that, they were 4-0.

  13. It sucks, but I like the pitching. Still a long season. If Minny is a 95 win team, then it really doesn’t matter. But we’re definitely not as bad as we’ve been these last two weeks.

  14. For what it’s worth, Tiger starters have gone 7 or more innings only 11 times in 51 starts.
