  9. That was one of the ugliest plays that I have ever seen. A ball not cleanly fielded followed by a ball not picked up cleanly, followed by an ugly throwaway to first base, and the whole time Bard is limping to second base with a pulled hammy

    1. Reminds me of a recent world series… Brought back horrific memories of pitchers trying to field.

  12. I’m a little confused by this Vargas fastball – he’s getting tons of swings and misses on it even though the pitch is in the strike zone, yet he is dialing it up at 87. Deception on his part or ineptitude on the Tigers part?

  15. It’s hard to believe, but Boesch will get his 100th AB in this game and is still hitting .350…Austin Jackson suddenly may not even be rookie-of-the-year on his own team…

    1. I’ve been meaning to look it up… has any team ever been 1-2 in rookie-of-the-year voting?

      What about two guys from the same team being back-to-back rookie-of-the-month winners?

      1. Off the top of my head, didn’t Whitaker and Trammell finish 1-2 in ROY voting back in ’78 or whenever their first year was?

      2. It’s happened a couple times, the most recent being 1989 when Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith of the Cubs did it.

        Trammell finished 4th in ROY voting in 1978 when Whitaker won it. Paul Molitor finished 2nd.

        I’m not even trying to look up ROMonth winners…. 😉

  29. Eh, Perry had a bad outing. It happens. However, I’m disappointed he was left in so long. The damage could have been minimized much earlier.

  31. I had to catch this on Gameday and stepped away for the 8th inning so I couldn’t watch it “live”. But here’s what I see:

    – leadoff single after falling behind. it happens.
    – K’s Bradley. Perry gets ahead and puts him away, nice.
    – Home Run. Oops. This isn’t good, but again, it happens.
    – single. OK, now maybe we have a problem. Visit to the mound to buy time or fix a flaw. Was anybody warm yet? I don’t know. This is really the earliest you can justify pulling Perry, otherwise we’d all be screaming about smokey “overmanaging” the bullpen.
    – double. Serious problem now, it looks like Perry isn’t fooling anybody. Is anybody warm yet? Coke ends up being the guy called on, but there’s been a string of right handed batters, so Perry is your best bet. Is Zumaya available? Hard to justify pulling Perry here with a light-hitting righty coming up. Who do you go with? Bonine? You need a strike out or a popup, and if Zumaya isn’t an option…
    – two-run single. Now Smokey puts Coke in the game.

    So I review all that and I find it tough to blame Leyland, but admittedly I’m missing some information. Mainly: 1) when did somebody else start getting warm and when were they ready? and 2) Was Zumaya available?

    If someone was ready early in in the damage and Zumaya was available, then I think Leyland deserves the bulk of the blame for not getting Perry out of there sooner. But if someone didn’t start throwing until AFTER the home run and/or Zumaya can’t be used, then what exactly were Leyland’s options here? I think in that case it’s much tougher to pin blame on Leyland. This loss sucked, but that doesn’t mean it was somebody’s fault (and many of you know I am not a big fan of Leyland).

    If anyone can provide more info on those two questions, I’d like to hear it so I have an accurate picture.

    1. Zumaya was available and was warmed up with Coke in the pen prior to the double. I peg this one on the skipper.

  32. Ugh this one was brutal to watch. There were a good amount of Tigers fans at the game too. (who all looked shell shocked in the 8th)

    And we blew the streak, the Tigs were 3-0 when Everett got an RBI before this.
