Game 2010.037: Red Sox at Tigers

Dontrelle Willis is scheduled to start today. Not having heard anything about the status of his flu-like symptoms that’s all I have to work with. Jon Lester takes the ball for the Red Sox.

Willis faced Boston once last season and he didn’t allow a hit. He did however allow 5 walks in 2.1 innings and 5 runs came around to score. Willis has been pitching much better than last year though so I don’t know how relevant that is.

Lester has been quite good this year. He’s striking out a batter an inning, limiting homers (4 in 43.2 innings) and not walking too many.

  1. Lester was my preseason runner-up for AL Cy Young.

Casper Wells is expected to be in the starting line-up and making his MLB debut. Supposedly he is good vs Lefties.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 1:26 pm

  2. Getting big help from the hated Yankees as NY rips Twins and Liriano (7-0 after 7). Tigers need to take advantage.

  3. Is Damon just getting the day off or is there another reason why he is not playing tonight?

by JIMMAC on May 15, 2010 at 6:42 pm

  4. Oh oh.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 7:09 pm

  5. DW is all over the place.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 7:11 pm

  6. How long will DW last ……seeing he is coming off the flu…….will he have the strength to go deep into the game?

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 7:18 pm

  7. Why would the Tigers bring up someone that is batting .203 in the minors?

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 7:22 pm

  8. DW is living dangerously giving up so many walks so far.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 7:31 pm

  9. He’s getting sent right back down after this game or Galarraga .

Wells was good at AA. He had a good Spring also. Why not give him this cup of coffee? It’s a good move IMO because of his Defense. He’s a CF by trade.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 7:37 pm

  10. for Galarraga, not or

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 7:39 pm

  11. We need to win games ……..not experiment.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 8:04 pm

  12. In 3 innings, Willis gives up 3 hits, walks 6 batters, and gives up just 3 runs. Then the Tigers come back to win it. That’s the Bernstein advantage.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 8:07 pm

  13. Sweet double by AE.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 8:09 pm

  14. I agree. Wells probably gives us the best chance at winning. Not only does he play good defense, he’s a big home run hitter also.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 8:17 pm

  15. Dontrelle, Dontrelle. Holy Moses.

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 8:19 pm

  16. when miner comes back i hope they give bonine a chance to start…by that time scherzer and/or d-train will/will not have figured things out.

by charlie on May 15, 2010 at 8:25 pm

  17. It was too predictable also. He was gassed from the get go. He clearly shouldn’t of pitched. They should of 15 day DL’d him making it retroactive to May 5th. Keep him there until he’s 100% healthy again.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 8:26 pm

  18. Casper Wells’ arm just saved us a run there. No way Damon makes that throw.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 8:30 pm

  19. He’s not coming back for quite a while, according to Leland. Probably (I’m speculating) will have surgery.

by kathy on May 15, 2010 at 8:32 pm

  20. i would still like to see bonine get some starts…if he can keep up his bullpen success there…and if battlestar can get it back together in the big leagues…and while i’m dreaming maybe pujols will demand a trade to the tigers and…

by charlie on May 15, 2010 at 8:59 pm

  21. Sweet triple by BB……he is the real deal……we have the makings of a game again.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 9:12 pm

  22. RBI!! Runs Boesched In!!

And a triple no less…against Lester no less…awesome

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 9:13 pm

  23. R3L2O…success!

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 9:14 pm

  24. as good as Bonine has been every thime out and as bad as Scherzer has been almost any manager except JL would make that switch..Jimbo will wait until the All Star break or never

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 9:25 pm

  25. Maybe when Scherzer drives down to Toledo Sizemore can ride shotgun.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 9:34 pm

  26. instead of the BOBS I think the new name for the bottom should be the .100 club,

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 9:35 pm

  27. if they take a SUV then there will be room for Everett and Laird and Avila and room to send up a catcher and his gear.

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 9:38 pm

  28. 8 pitch at bat, battling back from two strikes with multiple foul balls and draws the walk. Nice to see that from our lead-off hitter.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 9:39 pm

  29. Hehe…just make sure when they come back up that Raburn did not stow away in the trunk.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 9:40 pm

  30. maybe they need a full sized van cause Wells is going too!!!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 9:41 pm

  31. normally i would agree but Bonine has done such a nice job out of the pen, why mess with something that’s working?

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 9:46 pm

  32. Man I love Youk. I wish he were a Tiger. Draws 4 walks today, .300 hitter, excellent defense.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 9:50 pm

  33. Dontrelle has 16% of the Tiger of the Day …who the hell votes for this stuff?????????

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 9:58 pm

  34. Magglio!

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 9:59 pm

  35. Maggs!!!!!!!!!!!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:00 pm

  36. C’mon, Okajima, throw Miggy a knee high outside fastball, I dare ya!

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:01 pm

  37. heck of a stratedgy put Cabrerra and Boesch on and face the .100 club

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:05 pm

  38. BBBBBBBBBBBinge!!!!!!!!!!u kiddin me!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm

  39. Inge!

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm

  40. Nice contact by Inge, wasn’t expecting that at all.

    The Comeback Kids are alive!!

by Randolph on May 15, 2010 at 10:08 pm

  41. Damon has to be loading up the doughnut on his lumber getting ready to pinch hit, right?

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:08 pm

  42. c’mon Laird…

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 10:09 pm

  43. why not Santiago for Everett here???

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:11 pm

  44. ugly. Laird swung at one strike in that at-bat.

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 10:11 pm

  45. ok for Sizemore

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:11 pm

  46. hey Laird nice at bat,,,,if you look at his eyes when he swings he is looking into left field every time…doesn’t anyone who coaches notice that…..on that change that was no where near the strike zone his head was trurned almost to the Boston dugout..

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:15 pm

  47. Bottom of the order does exactly what was expected of them. 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Strike-out, line-out, pop-out. You have got to be kidding me!!!!!!

by Randolph on May 15, 2010 at 10:16 pm

  48. nice job by the Red Sox pitchers, but the bottom of our order is really bad sometimes.

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 10:16 pm

  49. The Tigers just blew their chance to win the game.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 10:17 pm

  50. 2X R3L2O fail…good job Laird

I credit Stephen for Inge’s good game, he has a knack

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 10:17 pm

  51. If we can get out of the bottom half of the frame, I absolutely LOVE Damon against Papelbon or even Bard.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:18 pm

  52. It just sets the table for a “Wells Wok-Off”.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 10:20 pm

  53. 2nd & 3rd nobody out – that was the Tiger’s golden opportunity to take the lead, and then bring out Valverde in the 9th…

by Stormin Norman $ on May 15, 2010 at 10:21 pm

  54. Could they have not got Damon up to plate with the two on and none out?

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 10:22 pm

  55. Leyland would never pinch hit for Laird in that situation, on the off chance that Avila would come in and then get hurt (the emergency 3rd catcher is Raburn).

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 10:27 pm

  56. Or not.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:32 pm

  57. Switch Inge to catch if needed.

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 10:35 pm

  58. In the past Inge would work as an emergency back-up catcher, but coming off of double knee surgery….not

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 10:38 pm

  59. Nothing high and middle-in to this weasel.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:39 pm

  60. Is this kid something or is he something!?

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:46 pm

  61. can this kid hit or what? that one was Boesched!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:46 pm

  62. there’s nobody to pinch hit with. The only guys remaining on the bench were Damon and Avila, both lefties who would have to face the lefty Okajima.

also, Boesch’s double was an absolute rocket. Wow.

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 10:47 pm

  63. On the bright side, we are unlikely to have another Laird AB today

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 10:55 pm

  64. Did that SOB just draw another walk?! God I hate Youk! (please disregard previous post re: same).

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 10:56 pm

  65. Everett WHF!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 10:57 pm

  66. Mr. X, you really think he didn’t pitch well because he was sick last week?? My god, give me a break. He didn’t pitch well because he has a psych problem where he’d rather walk six guys than have the other team tee off on him. This is about the tenth time this has happened in the past three years.

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 10:57 pm

  67. Don’t i know it!

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 10:59 pm

  68. Daymon

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:00 pm

  69. I heart our bullpen.

by Mark in Chicago on May 15, 2010 at 11:03 pm

  70. Zooooooooom ! way t opitch out of that !

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:06 pm

  71. Can Santiago run? Send him if he can! The bullpen is out of juice and we need to wrap this one up.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 11:09 pm

  72. hard to believe you get paid a million dollars and thats all that can be expected of you is a sac bunt…..nice bunt though!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:11 pm

  73. Why in the world are we still bunting here once the count goes 2-0?

If this guy isn’t throwing strikes take a few and get the runner to 2nd that way

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:12 pm

  74. ball four twice!!!!!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:17 pm

  75. Is it just me, or has Damon but rung up on iffy called 3rd strikes about 5 times already this season? It’s like he’s getting the rookie treatment, what’s that about?

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:21 pm

  76. I like Valverde here. Of course out of necessity, but also treat it like he is closing the game. Get out of this with our 3,4,5 coming up for the win. If then it goes even longer, start rolling out the bat boys on the mound and live to fight another day.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 11:21 pm

  77. Not just you.

by RoseTattoo on May 15, 2010 at 11:23 pm

  78. I’m going to sleep, when I want to wake up to a Inge walk-off.

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 11:25 pm

  79. See? I’m sleepy. I meant to say I want to wake up to a Inge walk-off.

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 11:26 pm

  80. Why not pinch run for Maglio here?

by Tbone on May 15, 2010 at 11:31 pm

  81. Nice call. Kelley in there, Boesch with a gapper, Miller time.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 11:32 pm

  82. Carlos WHO!!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:33 pm

  83. Personally I’m holding out for the Laird walkoff

Worried about Stephen being so sleeply on a Saturday night though…wasn’t that you posting last season whilst on 3am excursions in Manhattan?

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:34 pm

  84. come one Inge we need a Binge!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:35 pm

  85. The reason I’m so sleepy is I was out to 6am last night. Too old for back-to-backs!

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 11:36 pm

  86. Boesch’s stats for May are absolutely incredible so far!

by Randolph on May 15, 2010 at 11:36 pm

  87. you walk Inge to get to Laird a no brainer

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:37 pm

  88. Laird/Avila suicide!

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 11:38 pm

  89. work or not PH is absolutely the right move……….. and Avila can’t hit a lick but!

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:38 pm

  90. What the F___ is JL thinking……..another one of his brain cramps!

by Tigers Fan in Toronto on May 15, 2010 at 11:41 pm

  91. Can’t go wrong with that!!!!

by Randolph on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  92. Yippee Skippy!!

by RoseTattoo on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  93. That’s how you win. Walk on walk off.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  94. 2X R3L2O catcher fail

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  95. Walking Santiago on four pitches equals one way trip to Pawtucket. Everyone drive home safely!

by stephen on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  96. wouldn’t it figure that in a game where there were 100 walks that a walk wins the game………how about Boesch though in this game and all month

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  97. What a crappy win – but still a win!

That gaping hole at the bottom of our order is just killing us.

by Tbone on May 15, 2010 at 11:45 pm

  98. Ah, Daniel-San, you are finally learning.

by Dr. Detroit on May 15, 2010 at 11:45 pm

  99. the BOBS went 1-13 stranding 12 ….and a BOB gets walk to win the game

by Jud on May 15, 2010 at 11:48 pm

  100. Walkin’ Ramon!!

Youkilis may have had 5, but none of them was clutch.

But this would have been an awful game to lose..and the victory just as sweet

And I’m a bit disturbed that Jud used “avila” and “lick but” in the same sentence

by Coleman on May 15, 2010 at 11:49 pm

  101. The mash and bash boys at the 4 and 5 hole are really fun to watch and with Maggs in the 3 spot and a healthy Carlos behind Bash this could be a very powerful middle lineup.

by Gordon on May 16, 2010 at 12:02 am

  102. I thought it awesome seeing all 3 of our rookie outfielders in the same game. To bad Boesch Dh’d though. Jackson, Boesch, and Wells is our outfield of the future.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 16, 2010 at 12:07 am

  103. Awesome comeback win. We were getting spanked, but then we returned the favor.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 16, 2010 at 12:09 am

  104. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

by Keith (Mr. X) on May 16, 2010 at 12:10 am

  105. I like Avila, but he is really struggling. He needs to go to Toledo and get some consistent ABs and get back in the groove.

by Mark in Chicago on May 16, 2010 at 12:31 am

  106. Boesch isnt going anywhere! What a player, our future is looking great. Just saw a profile by Buster Olney on Baseball Tonight on Jacob Turner….Sounds like he’s gonna be a real stud. And love the moves after the game. We’re on the right track for sure

    by thennr21 on May 16, 2010 at 12:51 am

  107. Ha – good stuff!

by MCM on May 16, 2010 at 12:52 am

  108. I was at the game, and it kinda feels like it was actually two seperate games mashed into one. All hail the Kings of the Late Inning Comeback Win!

I almost feel bad for the Red Sox (or at least I kinda feel bad for my Red Sox fan nephew who was with me) because that’s a crappy way to lose a game! Hey, a win is a win, though! I’ll take it!

Man, Boesch had a big night. I think I was especially impressed with his hit off Papelbon, simply because it was off Papelbon. It’s like facing one of the top closers in the game didn’t faze him at all.

One of the best parts was that three pitch strikeout of Zoom’s. 100 MPH strike one! 100 MPH strike two!! 101 MPH strike three!!!

    by TigersFan81371 on May 16, 2010 at 4:02 am

  109. Good call!
