Game 2010.037: Red Sox at Tigers

Dontrelle Willis is scheduled to start today. Not having heard anything about the status of his flu-like symptoms that’s all I have to work with. Jon Lester takes the ball for the Red Sox.

Willis faced Boston once last season and he didn’t allow a hit. He did however allow 5 walks in 2.1 innings and 5 runs came around to score. Willis has been pitching much better than last year though so I don’t know how relevant that is.

Lester has been quite good this year. He’s striking out a batter an inning, limiting homers (4 in 43.2 innings) and not walking too many.

  1. Lester was my preseason runner-up for AL Cy Young.

Casper Wells is expected to be in the starting line-up and making his MLB debut. Supposedly he is good vs Lefties.

  2. Getting big help from the hated Yankees as NY rips Twins and Liriano (7-0 after 7). Tigers need to take advantage.

  3. Is Damon just getting the day off or is there another reason why he is not playing tonight?

  4. How long will DW last ……seeing he is coming off the flu…….will he have the strength to go deep into the game?

  5. Why would the Tigers bring up someone that is batting .203 in the minors?

    1. He’s getting sent right back down after this game or Galarraga .

Wells was good at AA. He had a good Spring also. Why not give him this cup of coffee? It’s a good move IMO because of his Defense. He’s a CF by trade.

          1. I agree. Wells probably gives us the best chance at winning. Not only does he play good defense, he’s a big home run hitter also.

  6. In 3 innings, Willis gives up 3 hits, walks 6 batters, and gives up just 3 runs. Then the Tigers come back to win it. That’s the Bernstein advantage.

    1. It was too predictable also. He was gassed from the get go. He clearly shouldn’t of pitched. They should of 15 day DL’d him making it retroactive to May 5th. Keep him there until he’s 100% healthy again.

      1. Mr. X, you really think he didn’t pitch well because he was sick last week?? My god, give me a break. He didn’t pitch well because he has a psych problem where he’d rather walk six guys than have the other team tee off on him. This is about the tenth time this has happened in the past three years.

  7. when miner comes back i hope they give bonine a chance to start…by that time scherzer and/or d-train will/will not have figured things out.

    1. He’s not coming back for quite a while, according to Leland. Probably (I’m speculating) will have surgery.

      1. i would still like to see bonine get some starts…if he can keep up his bullpen success there…and if battlestar can get it back together in the big leagues…and while i’m dreaming maybe pujols will demand a trade to the tigers and…

        1. normally i would agree but Bonine has done such a nice job out of the pen, why mess with something that’s working?

  8. Casper Wells’ arm just saved us a run there. No way Damon makes that throw.

  9. Sweet triple by BB……he is the real deal……we have the makings of a game again.

  10. RBI!! Runs Boesched In!!

And a triple no less…against Lester no less…awesome

  11. as good as Bonine has been every thime out and as bad as Scherzer has been almost any manager except JL would make that switch..Jimbo will wait until the All Star break or never

      1. if they take a SUV then there will be room for Everett and Laird and Avila and room to send up a catcher and his gear.

        1. Hehe…just make sure when they come back up that Raburn did not stow away in the trunk.

  12. instead of the BOBS I think the new name for the bottom should be the .100 club,

  13. 8 pitch at bat, battling back from two strikes with multiple foul balls and draws the walk. Nice to see that from our lead-off hitter.

  14. Man I love Youk. I wish he were a Tiger. Draws 4 walks today, .300 hitter, excellent defense.

  15. Dontrelle has 16% of the Tiger of the Day …who the hell votes for this stuff?????????

    1. Damon has to be loading up the doughnut on his lumber getting ready to pinch hit, right?

  16. Nice contact by Inge, wasn’t expecting that at all.

    The Comeback Kids are alive!!

      1. hey Laird nice at bat,,,,if you look at his eyes when he swings he is looking into left field every time…doesn’t anyone who coaches notice that…..on that change that was no where near the strike zone his head was trurned almost to the Boston dugout..

  17. Bottom of the order does exactly what was expected of them. 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Strike-out, line-out, pop-out. You have got to be kidding me!!!!!!

  18. nice job by the Red Sox pitchers, but the bottom of our order is really bad sometimes.

  19. 2X R3L2O fail…good job Laird

I credit Stephen for Inge’s good game, he has a knack

  20. If we can get out of the bottom half of the frame, I absolutely LOVE Damon against Papelbon or even Bard.

  21. Could they have not got Damon up to plate with the two on and none out?

  22. Leyland would never pinch hit for Laird in that situation, on the off chance that Avila would come in and then get hurt (the emergency 3rd catcher is Raburn).

    1. there’s nobody to pinch hit with. The only guys remaining on the bench were Damon and Avila, both lefties who would have to face the lefty Okajima.

also, Boesch’s double was an absolute rocket. Wow.

  23. In the past Inge would work as an emergency back-up catcher, but coming off of double knee surgery….not

  24. Did that SOB just draw another walk?! God I hate Youk! (please disregard previous post re: same).

  25. Can Santiago run? Send him if he can! The bullpen is out of juice and we need to wrap this one up.

  26. hard to believe you get paid a million dollars and thats all that can be expected of you is a sac bunt…..nice bunt though!

  27. Why in the world are we still bunting here once the count goes 2-0?

If this guy isn’t throwing strikes take a few and get the runner to 2nd that way

  28. Is it just me, or has Damon but rung up on iffy called 3rd strikes about 5 times already this season? It’s like he’s getting the rookie treatment, what’s that about?

  29. I like Valverde here. Of course out of necessity, but also treat it like he is closing the game. Get out of this with our 3,4,5 coming up for the win. If then it goes even longer, start rolling out the bat boys on the mound and live to fight another day.

  30. Personally I’m holding out for the Laird walkoff

Worried about Stephen being so sleeply on a Saturday night though…wasn’t that you posting last season whilst on 3am excursions in Manhattan?

    1. The reason I’m so sleepy is I was out to 6am last night. Too old for back-to-backs!

  31. work or not PH is absolutely the right move……….. and Avila can’t hit a lick but!

  32. What the F___ is JL thinking……..another one of his brain cramps!

  33. Walking Santiago on four pitches equals one way trip to Pawtucket. Everyone drive home safely!

  34. wouldn’t it figure that in a game where there were 100 walks that a walk wins the game………how about Boesch though in this game and all month

  35. What a crappy win – but still a win!

That gaping hole at the bottom of our order is just killing us.

  36. Walkin’ Ramon!!

Youkilis may have had 5, but none of them was clutch.

But this would have been an awful game to lose..and the victory just as sweet

And I’m a bit disturbed that Jud used “avila” and “lick but” in the same sentence

  37. The mash and bash boys at the 4 and 5 hole are really fun to watch and with Maggs in the 3 spot and a healthy Carlos behind Bash this could be a very powerful middle lineup.

  38. I thought it awesome seeing all 3 of our rookie outfielders in the same game. To bad Boesch Dh’d though. Jackson, Boesch, and Wells is our outfield of the future.

    1. Awesome comeback win. We were getting spanked, but then we returned the favor.

  39. I like Avila, but he is really struggling. He needs to go to Toledo and get some consistent ABs and get back in the groove.

  40. Boesch isnt going anywhere! What a player, our future is looking great. Just saw a profile by Buster Olney on Baseball Tonight on Jacob Turner….Sounds like he’s gonna be a real stud. And love the moves after the game. We’re on the right track for sure

  41. I was at the game, and it kinda feels like it was actually two seperate games mashed into one. All hail the Kings of the Late Inning Comeback Win!

I almost feel bad for the Red Sox (or at least I kinda feel bad for my Red Sox fan nephew who was with me) because that’s a crappy way to lose a game! Hey, a win is a win, though! I’ll take it!

Man, Boesch had a big night. I think I was especially impressed with his hit off Papelbon, simply because it was off Papelbon. It’s like facing one of the top closers in the game didn’t faze him at all.

One of the best parts was that three pitch strikeout of Zoom’s. 100 MPH strike one! 100 MPH strike two!! 101 MPH strike three!!!
