Game 2010.005: Indians at Tigers

The Tigers were witness to a nice start from a big question mark on Thursday when Dontrelle Willis picked up a quality start. Jeremy Bonderman will try to repeat the script as he makes his first start of the season today.

Bonderman finished serving his 3 game suspension that was handed down at the end of last season while in Kansas City. Today he’ll debut his new split finger pitch (replacing the long standing change-up project).

He’ll be opposed by Mitch Talbot. We don’t know much about Talbot, who only has 1 career start (a 4.1 IP, 3 run no decision in September 2008 against Baltimore). We do know he is right handed, 26 years old, and was traded from Houston to the Rays with Ben Zobrist for Aubrey Huff in 2006.

  1. What did Bondo do to get suspended? I’m drawing a blank (and have tried my best to forget the end of last season).

  2. I wish Bonderman the very best of luck. Having a solid #4 starter could be what makes or breaks this team.

  3. I’m looking forward to seeing whether Bondo’s “slider of death” is still there.

  4. He hit Delmon Young last year in the October 1st game (and Young was mad at his own pitchers for causing it to happen to him). I didn’t remember the exact circumstances either, but Mario and Rod were talking about it during the game yesterday.

    1. I believe Minnesota hit Miggy in consecutinve games and after the second one Bondo went out the next inning of the second one and drilled Young ….Great old school hardball

  5. if he throws that pitch he just struck Cabrerra out on he will have a nice year…great biting slider again

  6. lets see Avila is hittign .333 so if you add the batting averages together the catchers are hitting .333 not bad!

  7. What’s going on with the “Leave a Comment” fields? They don’t save your info anymore? Leaving comments has become quite laborious.

    1. Ken: billfer looked into this the other day and couldn’t figure out what was going on. Lots of people are having the same issue. For now we just have to live with it.

      1. Ok, thanks Mark. Bonderman looking good! Our rotation has the potential of being pretty sick if Dontrelle can continue to build confidence.

      2. if you can set your computer to “remember things” I’ve been typing the first letter in each line and clicking in the information. Don’t exactly know how that works or I would have explained it better!

    1. strangest thing about Bondo is he has been around a lot of years and he is only 27-28 yearsnold ans he has definately paid his dues….

    1. If memory serves, AE had a good start last year too, he even had a grand slam. It was downhill from there, though.

    1. Tough go of it this inning. Walking everybody in sight and he’s stopped throwing the changeup/splitter. It’s fastball/slider now.

    1. Value of Avila: 2 walks today.

Laird is a terrific defensive catcher, but we can’t carry a sub-.600 OPS for the entire season (he was .626 last year).

  8. Rod: “throwing is not really part of Johnny Damon’s game”
I guess that’s one way to put it…

  9. Nice job today, drew 6 walks so far. I like that. Only one extra-base hit though.

    1. nice patience Miggy! back to back walks and swing at a first pitch ball out of the zone

  10. If today’s Bondo is the real Bondo, we will do very very well. Got me a bit pumped and I only saw a few innings save for the recap.

Good god did he have a fantastic slider today, best I think I’ve ever seen it – nice tight control with a ton of late 12-6 movement. Might have to re-edit him on MVP Baseball. His strike to ball ratio was nearly 2:1 (59:32).

I second the sweep talk…matter o’ fact lets sweep the home stand! Maximize the hot hand by winning as many as we can right out the gate against two so-so teams.

  11. bondo looks great. But the key to staying healthy, is to use pitches other than slider, even if they aren’t as effective.
