Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that the framework for a blockbuster deal (h/t) between the Tigers, the Diamondbacks, and the Yankees was in place before at least one of the teams pulled out. The Tigers would have sent Edwin Jackson to Arizona, Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, and they would have received Max Scherzer with other young players floating to each team involved.
This would mesh with the various reports throughout the day that Arizona was looking like the destination for Jackson, and it also connects the dots on a report from Nick Piercoro about a third team being needed for the Diamondbacks to give up Scherzer (h/t).
From the sounds of the Fox Sports report it wasn’t Arizona who balked on the deal meaning it was the Tigers and/or the Yankees who passed. The Tigers had set their price for Granderson as Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson and with Jackson included in an outbound package I’d guess the Tigers would have been looking for Scherzer, either Jackson or Hughes, and then probably an additional prospect from the Yankees.

What we don’t know is if this deal is dead, or just dormant.
hopefully it was the Tigers. I don’t think they are getting enough major league ready talent for what they are giving up.
Yeah, I’m not impressed by that deal. If you’re gonna give up two key pieces of your major league roster, ya gotta get more than two guys you hope can fill their shoes plus a couple relievers.
Yeah, i think Mike Dunn needs to be replaced with a bigger name here. I know Jackson’s supposed to be the real deal and all, but he hasn’t proven anything yet (even his minor league stats aren’t that impressive).
EDIT: Obviously, the other reason this would appeal to the Tigers is that they’d cut a significant amount of payroll while filling a spot in their bullpen. But i still think they need one more key prospect.
MLB trade rumors is reporting it was Detroit that was not satisfied with the return.
Scherzer is not a guy you “hope” will fill EJ’s shoes. He is the real deal. Scherzer had a better season last year by many metrics than EJ did.
Yeah, so why ARI willing to give up Scherzer plus others in order to get EJ? Bottom line is that EJ is established and Scherzer is still “potential”. Considering what EJ accomplished in the first 80 games, his upside is right up there with whatever you project Scherzer to become and EJ’s downside is considerably higher than Scherzer’s. That makes Scherzer a higher risk. I’m ok with taking risks, but only if we’re compensated appropriately.
I don’t want to see guys like Curtis and EJ moved unless we get someone who is/will be able to fill their shoes plus someone to fill at least one of our gaping holes. If you’re not going to get that, there’s no point in making the deal unless you’re truly in rebuilding mode.
Arizona would also be getting Ian Kennedy from the Yankees. Maybe they like him a lot too. Otherwise i have no idea why they’d give up five years of Scherzer for two of Jackson.
Agreed. I think he’s had some injury troubles, but if healthy I love the Scherzer vs Jackson part. Just not enough that i’d part with Granderson.
Scherzer is legit, but Grandy for AJax (plus some) is not enough. I know he’s being talked about as a “platoon” player, but I don’t think he is worth only one top prospect in AJax (who is a bit overrated, I might add…)

Scherzer for E-Jax is a great move for us. I watched Scherzer quite a bit this season and I believe hes pretty solid. The fact that he has one blue eye and one brown eye is pretty cool too. Seriously though, after E-Jaxs terible second half, if the price is right then why not.
The problem with giving up Grandy is who takes over? Ramirez, Raburn, Wells?
Im all for adding Coke and Hughes. Coke would be solid in the pen and Hughes could fill in at the back end of the rotation, I guess.
Our lineup would be pretty weak without Grandy though and I would prefer a replacement MLB ready CF.

I have no way of knowing what the Tigers should get for Grandy and EJ but Austin Jackson is special. If he was a lefty he’d be the dream center for the Tigers. His speed is amazing and he can grow into his body. He still is raw but this kid is basically Cameron Maybin with less power and better range.
DD said the Tigs have like 10 guys in the minors who have the skill to be major league relievers in the next two years,why trade for 2 more? Hughes definitely needs to be in that package as well as Jackson who as others have said may be just another overhyped NYY prospect.
If the Tigers can get Hughes/Coke/Scherzer/A.Jackson for Grandy/Jackson then I’ll be fine with that.
I don’t care much for A. Jackson though. I’d probably make the deal without him being included.
The Tigers must have something up their sleeves though. They must think they have someone in the organization who can play CF that I don’t know about. Is it Raburn? Geez, I hope not.
My guess on who plays CF (if Grandy is traded) is Casper Wells.
